Winter Creek Cottage (Sonoma TOT #1032N) is situated in the prettiest - and most secreted - part of Sonoma. Just five miles from Sonoma Square, the Cottage feels like a million miles away, surrounded as it is by fields full of sheep, horses, birds an even the occasional llama! Look out in every direction and it's a feast for the eyes: new shoots of daffodils and tulips push their way up in the springtime, sultry summer with the slow pace of days gone by, fall colors in every hue and the crisp, temperate air of winter - each season has its charm and excitement.
Arrive by way of country roads. Just a hop, skip & a jump from Highway 12 and its easy connection to the main highways of California, in three turns you'll find yourself meandering through quiet country properties you thought were long-gone. Vineyards and horse farms define this magical part of the Valley of the Moon, where time seems to stand still (and yet there is excellent cell phone and high speed internet access, so you can be as connected as you wish). Turn up our private road populated by fewer than a dozen families, and roll up to Winter Creek Cottage, sitting on almost three acres of pristine land where meadows meet the forest.
Pull into your private driveway next to the big food garden, and unload in the privacy of a country setting. Once you bring in your bags, feel free to explore the property. There is a small creek that gurgles through the property year-round. Majestic oaks, elms and Ginkos shade the property in summer and make for riotous fall color. The gardens are old and lovely, with paths meandering over the small hillside next to the house.
The house itself is set up for charming country living. There are two spacious bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and one with a queen. The king bedroom has its own door that leads to a private deck where you can begin your mornings surrounded by the gardens and hillside, or walk around to the main, back deck where the hot tub and barbeque are located. The queen bedroom is a glassed-in room - with the shades down, it becomes a cozy hideout yet with its own doorway out onto the main deck and hot tub; with the shades up, it is part of the glorious hillside outside the windows.
The sheets are 800-count cotton on both beds, and the beds are piled with hypo-allergenic, fluffy (and in winter, warm) quilts and blankets. The towels are plentiful, over-sized, and plush. There is great closet space, in case you're coming up for a wedding or other occasion and bringing your wardrobe.
The bathroom is Italian tile with a spacious shower. The lighting is excellent. The best part about the bathroom is that you can walk directly from the shower out one of two side doors and slide into the hot tub on the deck. Mmmmm.
The kitchen is large and well-stocked. You'll find everything you could possible need to cook all of the delicacies from the local Farmers' Markets. Or, simply uncork a bottle of your favorite wine and enjoy a spread of the many hand-made Sonoma cheeses and excellent local breads. There is a full-sized refrigerator, gas range, coffee maker, water filter, toaster, and many other amenities.
In the living room, which has big, comfy overstuffed sectional couches and chairs, there is a baby grand piano for you to play, an iPod player to listen to your favorite tunes, and of course a flat-screen TV with cable. There is high-speed internet throughout the property.
On the deck, relax in the hot tub after a long walk or a hard day out wine tasting. You can also barbeque under the stars, or simply enjoy your morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine.
You can walk on the hillside of the property and in the huge food garden - feel free to grab a handful of cherry tomatoes! - or wander down the road.
This property is a wonderland: far from the maddening crowds yet close enough to enjoy everything about Northern California. We hope you'll agree, and look forward to hearing from you.
Carl is a physician and yoga teacher. Judi is a mindfulness trainer, executive coach for lawyers, and law professor. Carl's medical practice is up here in the Wine Country and Judi's mindfulness training and coaching practice is in San Francisco. We fell in love with Sonoma and decided to stake our claim on this gorgeous piece of land. When we aren't gardening or wine-tasting or hanging out with family and friends, we are bike riding or doing yoga or traveling. We have grown kids who love to visit the family compound, and a lavender-colored mini-labradoodle named Bleue who patrols the property looking for wild turkey and deer. Our house is just down the hill from Winter Creek Cottage so if you ever need anything, we're just a shout away.
Judi & Carl purchased this cottage in 2011
'Sonoma County.' 'Valley of the Moon.' The very words conjure romance, open space and beauty. We were drawn to this area for all of those reasons. We've stayed for those reasons, too, but also because this area is incredibly vibrant. Plenty of days we spend puttering around, cooking for friends & family, and enjoying the incredible views, but when we feel like doing something more active, we hop on our bikes and ride into town, go catch a movie at the historic Sebastiani Theater, or - naturally - go taste a bottle from one of our favorite wineries. Every day feels like vacation here - we know we are incredibly lucky to live here, and look forward to sharing our little slice of heaven with you.
We must have looked at fifty properties before we found Winter Creek. But the minute we set foot on this property, we knew we were home. It's hard to say what clinched the deal. Was it the views from every direction - sheep to the north, horses to the south, the mountain above us? Or was it the parade of wild turkeys marching to the creek in springtime, or the deer and foxes every evening? Certainly the house has its own charm, with the gigantic, round picture window looking out over the Valley, the light coming in from all sides, and the spacious deck looking over the creek. But there's something more, something intangible, about this property. Everyone who visits us feels the magic of this land. We feel it every day. We hope you have the chance to join us here, to experience this magical spot.
Winter Creek Cottage is situated in a great location. It is a 5-10 min drive to downtown Sonoma and an easy drive to Napa. At the same time that it is convenient, it is also snuggled out in the beautiful countryside, a long way from any hustle or bustle it is incredibly quiet and supplies absolute privacy. The hot tub is well maintained and enjoyable both day and night. The cottage has everything you need for your stay--kitchen equipment, plenty of towels and linens, basic things for the bathroom. The Cohen's were helpful with all our questions and very hospitable--supplying us a nice bottle of red wine to welcome us and a bubbly for Christmas. They live close by, but are not at all intrusive, being there only if needed. We think this cottage gives a nice slice of Sonoma-living, and was a cozy retreat for the Christmas holiday

My girlfriends and I enjoyed our wine country getaway long weekend at the Winter Creek Cottage over President's Day weekend. The home was perfect... large and spacious for the four of us, plus the hot tub was great on the cool damp winter nights, great kitchen with everything you need for a dinner/breakfast in, very accessible to downtown Sonoma and the Sonoma Hwy. We loved all the large windows looking out to the beautiful Sonoma Valley and the property with all it's gardens, landscaping, small creek and sculptures. The owners were great and there if you had any questions or needed anything but still allowed for privacy.
We enjoyed our stay very much - especially sitting on the sunny deck, listening to the sound of the little creek next to it! Lots of great books too - would be great to come back without the kids to have the time for reading....Very clean, cosy and comfortable place with nice views! Thanks!
The cottage was exactly as pictured, spacious and comfortable, with much more room than needed for a couple. We chose it in part for the hot tub which was wonderful. We visited vineyards from Calistoga to south of Sonoma and enjoyed every moment of our stay...the busy days and the peaceful nights in the cottage.
My husband and I took our in-laws and our 2 year old daughter here for two night's stay recently, and had a fabulous time. The house was very charming, with skylights in practically every room, beautiful scenery surrounding us, and very comfortable. We enjoyed the piano, the outdoor vegetable garden, and the well-stocked kitchen. We ended up spending a lot of time just hanging out in the cottage, enjoying the use of the hot tub, soaking in the serenity, and relaxing. The available crib and high chair was a big plus for us as it meant we didn't need to bring extra luggage for the little one. We had some difficulty working the dvd player but Karl was quick to come over and help us to problem solve it. I would definitely come back if we were to stay in this area again.
Took a girls trip to Sonoma and this house was perfect. Everything we needed was there in the house, even a nice bottle of wine was waiting for us. It was spacious and relaxing. It wasn't far from the downtown area but felt like a nice get away. I would absolutely stay here again.
