|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
This lovely, in-town, impeccably renovated 1800's historic Oak Bluffs apartment is adored by all who stay here. With landscaped gardens, a beautiful patio with a hot tub, outdoor shower, outdoor designer Rais fireplace, and original architectural details, the house is truly an oasis in the heart of Oak Bluffs.
Surrounded by all the vibrant and colorful life of Oak Bluffs in every direction, there is never a need to commute to town for the islands most popular events. The August Fireworks, Illumination night, concerts on the park are all around the corner. And while parking is available, cars are irrelevant to many vacationers.
The house is a very short walk along beautiful Ocean Park from the ferry, a couple of blocks from the island’s exceptional transportation system, a couple of blocks to State Beach, a block from delightful restaurants and bars, practically next door to performances at the Tabernacle or Union Chapel, a block from the Methodist Campgrounds with their spectacular and colorful historic Gingerbread houses, a few blocks from the Harbor with its magnificent sunsets and waterfront restaurants and nightlife, and the ice cream shops, arcade, movie theaters and live local music of Circuit Ave. The breathtaking bike path from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown, with water on both sides, begins just a few blocks from the house, and running and walking paths through nature trails are a short jog away. Oak Bluffs truly has everything, and is the jewel of Martha's Vineyard Island.
This first floor apartment has a large and sunlit gourmet kitchen with skylights, a lovely living room with antique ruby glass windows (that can serve as a second bedroom with a pull-out couch), a small, zen, queen bedroom, a full bath and an outside shower, patio, hot tub, outdoor fireplace and gardens. The outdoor features are shared with the upstairs apartment during daylight hours (unless renting the whole house) and are exclusive to this first floor apartment after dark.
The house is very special, with beautiful energy from all the wonderful people who have stayed there and graced its walls and gardens. Up to four people are welcome here.
There may be very carefully selected pets in this rental.
I fell in love with this house the minute I saw it. It took me a full winter to be able to be able to call it my own, because when I made the offer the owner was concerned about disappointing someone else, though they had was no contract at all. She was so kind, she spent a few months trying to find this person, who was out of the country and difficult to track down. In the meantime, she knew how much I loved the house, and after several long months she called to say it was mine if I still wanted it, and I could take a few days to let her know. I told her I didn’t even need a few minutes. No other house that I had seen captured my heart as this one had.
It took great amounts of work to prep this house to be my massage center, as it would be for some years before I could make it my home. One day, at my other massage center in Vineyard Haven, I interviewed a lovely massage therapist from Louisiana. I had no idea she had MV ties, but I instantly adored her and her work and hired her on the spot and sent her here to do a massage. Twenty minutes passed, and the phone rang. “You are not going to believe this, Sharon, but this is the house my grandmother grew up in.”
Oma (grandmother in German), came right over the next day from West Tisbury, where she then summered, brought me this photo of her parents and this house as it was in 1908, and gave me a tour of the house, telling me where all the original details used to be. Oma was beautiful, and her granddaughter is beautiful, as was the previous owner. I just kept feeling that it was no wonder that it feels so special in here. Since that time, my friends, family and guests have only added to that feeling. Time and time again, people walk in and comment on the energy of the home. I feel it deeply myself.
To top off all of this wonder, the last bit of amazement for me was the dog in the photo - a dog with a half black and half white face, split down the middle. On the other side of the couch, you can see the photo of my dog, Haffa, at the time. A dog with a half black and half white face, split down the middle, almost 100 years later.
Life is magical, mysterious and beyond imagination.
I have lived on Martha's Vineyard full time for 20 years now, but vacationed there as a child. Martha's Vineyard has always been a very special place to me, and I love it dearly. I found this home about 12 years ago and fell in love with it immediately. A massage therapist on Martha's Vineyard, voted 'Best of the Vineyard' in the Vineyard Gazette, I once did massage out of this house, and people adored being there for their massages! You will see - the home is a true, historic beauty, and has a special feeling to it as well.
My favorite morning routine is to go for a run through the beautiful nature trails a short jog away, have a healthy smoothie in the hot tub, and then walk down the street to the local coffee shop for a wonderful cup of tea and to say hi to the locals gathering there.
My nieces and nephews on the other hand, get far more excited about the late afternoon or after dinner walk down to the arcade and ice cream shop to lick their ice cream cones while watching the nightlife walk by on Circuit Ave!
Oh - and of course, the two movie theaters down the street call to them from time to time as well!
Sharon Strimling purchased this apartment in 2000
There is no location on Martha's Vineyard like downtown Oak Bluffs, and nowhere in the world I would rather be. With the coffee shops, restaurants and shops in town, the beach just a couple of blocks away, Ocean park separating the house from the ocean, the Tabernacle a block in the other direction, the Flying Horses carousel for children, Union Chapel with its performances and the harbor just down the street, it just doesn't get any better than this. I will never look to be in any other location on Martha's Vineyard than in the charming and lively town of Oak Bluffs!
House call massage at this rental is available by appointment. Appointments should be booked well in advance to assure availability.
This location and host are as good as it gets. This house literally in the middle of town. You walk out and you are right next to Backdoor Donuts, literally the best donuts I have ever had and even better because they are open at midnight. The house is perfect, beautiful, clean, and has everything you could ever want and so so much more. The Jacuzzi is magical, the outdoor shower was my favorite thing about Martha's Vineyard, and the big open kitchen makes for a great social environment to the home.
The host Shaaron is the best host I have ever experienced. She greeted us when we got there with suggestions for where to eat and even ran out to get us some menus from new places. She has a great welcome letter that covers all the details of the house. There is also a folder with tons of great suggestions for things to do and places to go. She even put together a perfect day on the island to give you her perfect day mapped out.
We went all over the island and I can not imagine a more central wonderful place to stay. We got so lucky finding this place and Sharon was so wonderful helping us plan our trip.

First time on Martha's Vineyard! This place had it all and was in the best location. You truly can smell the donuts from BackDoor across the street and we made numerous trips there. Everything is in walking distance and I would highly recommend the bus to get from town to town. We didn't need a car to see it all! Sharon was very helpful and extremely communicative before, during and after our stay. We truly felt like an extension of her family; not just visitors. Take advantage of the 2 person hot tub after a long day out and about. It was so nice! The house was perfect for us and if we stayed longer, would have loved to cook in the well equipped kitchen. Would highly recommend staying at Sharon's place. We will be back for sure!
We thoroughly enjoyed this apartment as a jumping off point for our first ever MV visit. It was comfortable and well outfitted, and ideally located just a couple of blocks from all the shops and restaurants of Oak Bluffs (and sinfully close to the temptations of Back Door Donuts) and just a short walk from the wonderful ocean views. We rented a car which allowed us to visit many different corners of the island (the beaches at Long Point Wildlife Refuge were a special favorite), and the pre- to post-Labor Day transition allowed us to experience the island charms both busy and quiet. All in all, a great experience, and we would certainly return to the island (and this apartment) in the future, and recommend it to friends and family.
I really can't say enough about Sharon's attention to detail. She is a wonderful host and has included small touches everywhere that made this the most welcoming spot we have stayed in many years of visiting the Vineyard. It is clear that she genuinely wants you to have a wonderful experience, and her authenticity shines through in every interaction.
The listing was perfectly accurate, Sharon's communication prior to arrival was spot-on, and I would absolutely recommend this wonderful home to anyone who appreciates honest communication and sheer loveliness.
The location is truly perfect, I ate way too many donuts from Back Door Donuts (you can smell them from the house!), and loved stopping it at Offshore for some of the best craft beer in Massachusetts (food is only so-so, but the beer - to die for). The kitchen is a dream. If you plan to cook on your holiday, this is the place. There are more than the bare essentials, making it the best kitchen we have encountered on MV. In addition to being well-appointed, it is designed to encourage conversation and gathering, as a kitchen should be! Hands down, though, the best part of this little gem is that Sharon welcomes and includes pets in the experience. Like many dog-lovers, our pup is a member of our family, and we wouldn't dream of staying in a place where she could not also be. She was welcome and cozy here.
You will not find a better owner or property in Oak Bluffs and maybe not on all of the Vineyard.
Tips for MV: don't drive! There are way too many cars taking over the island! Take advantage of the Vineyard's many land bank properties and walking trails. And the VTA bus system is a dream. It is reliable and friendly.
Things to note (that Sharon has no control over): Oak Bluffs has its share of skunks. They are out in full force in the evenings. If you do bring your pooch, be on the lookout! Also, inexplicably, the Vineyard does not yet have community composting. This is a real waste for a place that is apparently committed to the environment. Something to be aware of if you cook a lot!
The words that come to mind are care, taste, and integrity. Sharon, really cares for her guests and she has done so by attending to details to ensure an enjoyable stay. This is a well kept and a very well appointed home. It has all the necessary amenities and is really just lovely. This home is conveniently located in town and, yet, has a private feel. Also, wonderful, is that Sharon truly makes herself available to guests and is never intrusive. At the risk of this property not be available when I wish to return, I highly recommend it.
Fabulous in town home with all you need to make your vacation easy and enjoyable. Oak Bluffs has great food, things to do and shopping. Easy to drive and/or bike anywhere.
We were thrilled with our experience at this perfect 1st floor apartment in Oak Bluffs. A 3 minute walk from everything in town, we couldn't be happier with the location (and you can see the Back Door Donuts line from the living room - Bonus!). We used this as a central hub to explore the island on our 5 day trip (we did bring our car and used the parking spot at the house). The apartment itself was great, had everything we needed and plenty of space to spread out. It felt like home for the week and we were sad to leave. The other reviewers were spot on and the host, Sharon was great, checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. We even had a chilly day of rain, but the adorable pellet stove fireplace in the living room made it a cozy day for reading instead of a lost beach day. If there was one thing we noticed, it was the thin walls - you could hear the person moving around/playing music, etc. upstairs, but we expected this (per the owner's description and notes around the house and other reviews) and for the most part it was fine and definitely didn't take away from our experience. A tip - this apartment can sleep 4 with the french doors in the living room shut and the pull-out couch open. We also used the outdoor wood fireplace and the two person hot tub and both were great! It was nice to have the essentially private outdoor space. It is shared with the upper apartment, but we never ran into them outside. I highly recommend this apartment and we look forward to returning on our next trip!
This house is located in heart of Oak Bluffs. It is surrounded by all the wonderful restaurants, shops, theaters, bars, parks, harbors and beaches that Oak Bluffs offers. An unbeatable location and a truly lovely house.
