We love the Chautauqua area for lake living, leisure time activities/sports, and relaxation all year round. It provide wonderful opportunities for us to bond as a family, or share a wonderful weekend with friends far and near. If we are not able to use our lil red cape cod retreat, we hope to share it with others so they can make fond memories of their own.
The Red Grove Retreat purchased this house in 2012
This property is a small little gem nestled in the heart of Bemus Village. It is a cozy house perfect for no fuss weekend or summer get-a-way. It is walking distance to many neighborhood amenities- the quaint village of Bemus, activities for kids, the beauty of a morning bike ride/jog or evening stroll along Lakeside Drive with its wonderful houses, and the quite nature of Long Point State Park. Chautauqua Lake offers beautiful views, wonderful sight seeing of antique wooden boats, sailboats, or tranquil fishing mornings. Small town local flavor abounds from the fry and rib dinners at See-Zuh house, mussels and specialty chips at the Italian Fisherman served along side cold drinks on a floating dock,or the Hare N Hound scallops in acorn squash with a glass of red wine for a romantic night with a hubby. Beef on Wreck and the Chicken Lips are a fav casual night with the kids at the Casino after a fun filled day on the lake water tubing and swimming. A close family second is Capolla's pizza followed by a stop at the Bemus Market for ice cream, both local own. On the shopping list to take home is Steidman's Corner local coffee, homemade pie, or Utz ' the Crab Chips' (Chesapeake Bay seasoning). A short drive away is Guppy's restaurant, which never disappoints. Or scout out the local farm market down the street for dining at home, be sure to grab some Glad or sunflowers for cheer. Adult night out on the town begins with Lenhart porch rocking - the perfect location to watch the sunset off the lake, followed by a Lenhart Rocker or Dark and Stormy drink at this hotels classic bar, The Lamplight. The ambience is cozy, with intimate conversations and nastaglic background music. The night usually ends with small groups of friends nestled in the front lawn. For more excitement, the Village Casino is the ticket, with entertainment on most weekend nights. Sunday afternoons bring live entertainment on the Bemus Pop stage from your anchored boat. Lake living at its best
This house is nestled in a friendly neighborly street. It is close to all the action of Bemus, in fact, we can faintly hear the bands from our front porch. If you are looking for a private location with space to roam, the Red Grove Retreat may not compliment your living needs. This is a village gem nestled in the heart of it all- close to neighbor houses on a smaller lot and village action.
We planned a girls weekend at the Red Grove Retreat and we had a great time.
The cottage is just lovely with all the whimsical decorations and the owners thought of everything - even a wine cooler to chill your wine.
The cottage is located one block from the lake - excellent location.
Katrina the house manager was great - she was able to provide us with places for dinner, pizza, wineries etc.
The town of Bemus was only two blocks away and very convenient to walk.
The leaves were beautiful when we visited in October.
We visited some of the wineries and Johnson Winery was our favorite, wine was good and the people were very friendly. We also visited Southern Tier Brewery - one of our favorites.
The Red Grove folks made our trip perfect down to the starter pack to the little signs throughout the house to remind us to relax and enjoy our family. The place is spacious yet cozy. I will definitely be back.
Four of us stayed for the weekend for snowmobiling and the accommodations were excellent. It has a fully stocked kitchen and the house is very relaxing after a long day on the trails. It is just a short distance to the golf course so the trails are very close or you can also jump onto the lake and go.
Red Grove Retreat is a charming little cottage. I say little but it is actually very spacious and comfortable! Myself and two girlfriends had a weekend getaway there and we were not disappointed! When we arrived the village of Bemus Bay was jumping with Labor Day weekend festivities and we had a magical night watching live music and fireworks on the lake.. all while seated at a beautiful table overlooking the lake at the "Italian Fisherman" restaurant. The food was top-notch and the mood festive!
The cottage is clean and tastefully decorated with lots of little "touches" that give it it's charm. We had a great time and would highly recommend the Red Grove Retreat.
My family absolutely loved this little red cottage- the best parts were the walk to Bemus Point activities and the "Kid Cave" bedroom that was perfect for little ones! We thoroughly enjoyed walking to dinner or activities at Bemus Point - the walk was perfect for our 2 kids under the age of 10. The house was beautifully and whimsically decorated- it really felt like it was our home away from home. We also had fun exploring the area...if you have kids we highly recommend Mayville Park and Beach and the Midland Amusement Park. We also had a lot of fun eating outside at the Casino and the park across the street. And of course ice cream in town....only order a baby cone or small for youngsters they are huge! Overall, a great stay for us and we definitely want to go back! Craving the silence and quaint lake life already....
Lovely little cottage and town. Lively nightly entertainment at the stage, great secection of restuarants, friendly atmosphere. The home owners could not have been more welcoming. A return trip is most certainly in the planning! Perfect for adults and children alike. You will not be disappointed!
Enjoy the best of Chautauqua Lake! In the Spring, enjoy a quiet cocktail in the front sun room or bar of Red Grove Retreat, then stroll to the Hare and Hound for a romantic dinner. Or consider a girls weekend away sharing precious time with dear friends- strolling the day away in the village, knitting,on the wine trail, playing cards- whatever you consider leisure time with the gals. Spend the evening in with dinner or munchies, a movie night and conversing until the wee hours of the night. Or for the men folk, hang out watching sports, playing poker, followed with dinner and beer at a local favorite such as the See Zurh house.
In the summer, the possibilities are endless, as this is the season when the lake is alive with non-stop activity. For a couples, ladies or guys weekend, consider starting the day with a feeling of yester year at the historic Hotel Lenhart for breakfast. Then off for a round of golf at one of the many golf clubs, or perhaps play a game of tennis. Shop for that unique item at the many small local stores (Skillman's store is a local favorite), ending your adventure with a cold drink at the Hotel Lenhart to watch the sunset. Follow your Lenhart visit with al fresco dining lakeside at The Italian Fisherman. Live music can be enjoyed at the floating stage at the Italian Fisherman or a band at the Casino for the late night crowd. All of this fun is within walking distance from Red Grove Retreat.
Of course, you can delight in a day on the lake. Go out with a fishing guide to reel in some fish. Consider renting a boat at one of the many marinas, taking sailing classes at the Chautauqua Institute, or renting a kayak or paddle board at Evergreen Outfitters. For family fun, start the day fishing off the dock with worms from Bemus Point Market or Hogan's Hut, then consider fueling up afterwards with a huge cinnamon roll at Bemus Inn. Mid-day it is off for a day at the beach or park. Or back on the boat for more swimming, boating, or a leisurely boat trip to Webb's in Mayville, or Midway State Park for games and rides for the young and young at heart. Enjoy lunch or dinner at Coppalos pizza and ice cream at the Bemus Point Market. Or consider the Casino for lakeside dining, featuring casual fare. If you are in the mood for more adventure, rent a bike to cycle along Lakeside drive, along the way admire some lakeside beauties of houses or lake views, as you peddle to Long Point State Park.
If you are consider venturing a small distance away- the Chautauqua Institute awaits you, where the offerings are limitless- family fun cycling the Institute, unique architecture, special classes and lectures, ballet, opera, unique films, and well-known named entertainment. Be sure to check out the Institutes website for all their many offerings before you arrive, as some events sell out.
Consider visiting Findley Lake, Mayville, or Lakewood for another small town adventure. A boat ride on the Chautauqua Bell or crossing the bay with the Bemus Stow Ferry is always a delight. A visit, just a block away from your house, to the Larsen Boating Center brings a bit of nostalagia from yester year. Mayville has the most wonderful beach on the lake to relax the day away, complete with a soft serve ice cream stand located on the opposite side of the street. Peek n Peak has a new zip line. Every weekend seems to bring a new small town festival to take in and enjoy- craft fairs, boating events, the I love Lucy festival ( August) in Jamestown.
In the winter season, endless snow mobile trails for adventures are right outside your door, ice fishing awaits on the lake, and snow shoeing at our local Long Point State Park. For the little ones, a small sledding hill is located behind Bemus Elementary school, where many locals can be found enjoying the snow with the littles.
Adventure outside the village, for downhill skiing, spa bookings, or indoor swimming at Peek and Peak. Adults can enjoy the beautifully crafted bar inside the lodge. Consider a visit to a Findley Lake casual local hang out - the French Creek- for some wings. The excitement of Ellicotville's Holiday Valley Skii resort area is a must for avid skiers. The ski town is lined with cute shops, restaurants and bar, including the Ellicotville Brewing company. All Ellicotville has to offer is a little over an hour away from the Red Grove Retreat. In the warmer months, mountain hikes, zip line, and a nice pool area await.
Fall in Chautauqua, brings crisp weather, a time to relax with a book, catching up with friends, or a stroll/bike ride to enjoy the beautiful foliage around the lake. It is a quieter time and the village goes from bustling summer mode to peaceful tranquility, as many of the shops and some restaurants close for the season. - A time to unwind and hibernate - a cozy retreat from the craziness of your daily life.
A trip to Red Grove Retreat will never disappoint. We look forward to having you as our guest(s) soon.
