We (Mike and Judy Whalen) have been married for 17 yrs. Mike is 60 and retired in May of 2011 after 34 yrs with the Dept. of Corrections as a Health Unit Manager. Mike grew up in Muskegon and they currently live in Spring Lake. The 'Jackson Place' was just purchased in December 2012. We think we have found a perfect gem for guests looking for real value during their stay in such a wonderful tourist destination. Economical shoppers (particularly experienced return Grand Haven travelers) with no desire to compromise elegant lodging will notice the value. It has everything one would need and expect without the waterfront price. The location provides convenient access to everything that Coast Guard City has to offer. We make every effort to provide our guests with many comforts and extra amenities. Our goal is for our guests to enjoy carefree vacations at the Jackson Place so much that they will want to return year after year.
Mike Whalen purchased this condo in 2012
Many Grand Haven vacation rentals are 1900 vintage homes or buildings that have been remodeled. While many are well done, they still come with high rental rates and dated floor plans that include one bathroom. We know- we have one and it's the oldest house on the channel - (see property #3006306) 'Whalens Channel House' at 834 S Harbor drive. We have put our hearts and souls ino making that old home very comfortable -- and it really is lovely. The truth is that 'many' of the older rental home homes have poor layouts ,with poor uses of space, often do not provide enough bathrooms, have sub par air conditioning and electrical systems to accomodate their guests. We looked for some time to find the perfect property to give our guests a great value for their money. Travelers don't have to compromise modern lodging that they have come to expect for an old upgraded turn of he century home. The Jackson place has a great location without the waterfront rates and built in 2006.
The condo is well designed and the architecture is pleasing to the eye. The layout is open and welcoming with functional living areas/spaces for a variety of social gatherings. One can curl up with a book in front of the gas fireplace, entertain a larger group in the loft area or relax in the recreation room with the wet bar. An important feature is that everything works like it is supposed to. No one will ever be late getting ready because they have to share bathrooms! This condo has three full and one half baths, a washer and dryer and iron and ironing board. This 1911 sq ft. 3 story condo is ideally located, modern and beautifully decorated.
The apartment was in a very good location close enough to walk to some restaurants and the lighthouse. It has everything you could need spread over 3 storey's which allows for some independence if required and is very comfortable. The ability to drive into the garage, which has automatic door opening, and have direct access to the accommodation was great. It felt a very safe area and the communication with Mike
was very good. We had a great stay and would recommend this apartment to everyone.
This condo is unusually nice. Very large, well equipped and comfortable. Nice central location, close to downtown restaurants and shops, and also close to more mundane shopping (groceries, drugstores and such). The bikes are a nice and unusual extra touch. The garage is also a plus. Grand Haven is a beautiful town with everything you need. About all that would improve this place is a water view and a queen-size bed.
Also, my deposit was returned very promptly, which is not always the case. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. By the way, the Morning Star Café alone is reason enough to visit Grand Haven. Don't miss it.
Our family (2 adults and three children) and my brother and his two children recently stayed at this lovely home. It was absolutely ideal for a mix of two families and kids of different ages. Everyone had their own sleeping/hang out area, complete with television, sleeping arrangements and in most cases a bathroom! The condo is large and very well kept, and also well situated a comfortable walk to downtown. We even enjoyed playing a couple of the board games available! Highly recommend it.
The Jackson place was a great place to stay! It was located so close to downtown Grand Haven that we could walk there in less than 15 minutes! There was plenty of space for everyone to sleep between the regular beds and pull outs. The only issues and this was due to the weather was when we first got in there it was extremely hot! The temp was about 84 in the house(it was about 96 and VERY humid that day outside), we cranked the AC on but because it was 3 levels it took a good 24 hours to cool the place down. I slept on the very top level in the bedroom and thankfully we had the fan because the first night was a little rough in terms of the temperature up there. But once the AC fully cooled down the place we were all comfortable. The book was very helpful in terms of where things were, etc. We used the grill one night and it worked great! The weather wasn't the greatest for us so didn't get a chance to take the bikes out but would have if it was nicer out. Overall the place was great and if we do our girls trip in GH again we will def be staying here again!
My husband and I rented the condo and had our three adult children (and spouse) come during the week. Several nights all were there. There was ample room for privacy and for gathering. Easy walk to shopping, activities and restaurants. Walking to lighthouse and beach was a bit more challenging but possible. Grand Haven is a friendly town and has a variety of activities. We have family in Muskegon and Grand Rapids so we were in a great location to visit both locations. Only drawback for us is the distance from Pittsburgh...hard to find Steeler's fans🏉. We plan on returning and will definately try to reserve the Jackson street condo again. Mike &Judy have thought of everything. The Cabonor's, Pittsburgh, Pa.
It was a very nice stay, plenty of room, almost 3 separate suites with the 3 levels. Very close to downtown and activity. The place was clean and decorated nicely compared to other places we've stayed over the years. Only down side is there is no TV on the middle floor where everyone gathered to eat and sit. But over all a very good rental.
This condominium is new construction and complete with modern features. It is located two blocks from Chinook Pier and the Farmer's Market. It is less than two blocks from from Warf marina where the Grand Haven boardwalk begins on the Grand River. Across the river is the worlds largest musical fountain that starts at dusk every night throughout summer. Downtown has everything to offer; great pubs, restaurants, specialty shops, and entertainment. Continue down the boardwalk about a half mile to the number one State Park in Michigan. Past that is the City Beach. Mulligan's Hollow has a skate park, playground, baseball diamond, basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields and trails.
Michigan's Adventure (Cedar Point owned) amusement park is 18 miles away.
Michigan's Adventure is a 250 acre amusement park in Muskegon County, Michigan, about halfway between Muskegon, It is the largest amusement park in the state and has been owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company since 2001. As of 2012, Michigan's Adventure has 53 rides, more than any other park in the state. The park also includes an outdoor water park ...
Grand Haven area has a diverse assortment of shopping options for the bargain hunter from' unique antiques, linen pant suits or boat supplies. No big malls here; check out the eclectic variety of boutiques and restaurants all downtown within walking distance or any trolley. Also, spend some time to enjoy those hard to find galleries, quaint shops and cafés off the beaten path.
With average temperatures in the mid-70s during the summer months you'll spend long, lazy days at the several different beaches in the area. We have miles of Great Lakes Miles coastline to enjoy and explore. Standup paddle boarding, kayaking and kiteboarding , have become the rage in recent years. Just plain old beachcombing and people watching has become almost a sport at any of the area beaches. Bike and hiking trails are popular among bicyclists and hikers. The city skate park is in constant motion during the warmest months of the year. Water enthusiasts can enjoy guided fishing, sailing, and diving expeditions, cruises and tours provided by one of the many charter boat captains.
