About Laura Owens
I am a musician and educator. The lake cottage provided to me a lot of special solace to practice and develope my musicianship on piano, violin, mandolin. Plus, I love swimming!
Why Laura Owens chose Huddleston
My father spotted Smith Mountain Lake over 40 years ago and bought a large track of land. In fact, he put the road on this peninsula. Several family homes were built and some lots sold. This cottage property was a gift from my father and was my home for 16 years. To eliminate a daily commute to work, I moved to town nearby, and created a beautiful short-term lake rental to share with visiting guests on vacation.

La Casa Bonita
Great Property with beautiful views and amazing lake access; needs a little bit of updating but overall great experience.
I am very glad you had a nice stay, and thank you very much for the nice review.
It IS a 4 star location, but not so much a 4 star hotel-type situation. However, we ARE working on some upgrades/improvements to the property. Thank you again for visiting.
We loved being on the Bedford County side. More to do, more restaurants available and everything easily accessible. We enjoyed the deck, the dock, the kayaks, the sunsets! The weather was great as well. Highly recommended!!!!!!!!
I am very thankful you had a grand stay, and thanks so much for a glowing review!
great little house, if your looking for a 5 star home look elsewhere, this home is a 3 star home, plenty of parking for cars and two jet ski trailers, our dog had a great time with swimming and chasing the small lizard around the yard, the dock measures about 12x12 and plenty of room for all 4 of us, the swimming was enjoyable, fishing was good, was able to secure our three jet skis around the dock, refueling was interesting but not impossible, tall dock and low water, the water does get choppy starting Friday evening to about Monday morning the usual weekend boat traffic, but never really scary,
The house was clean and reasonable, propane stove and dishwasher worked well, the bathroom was nice, whirlpool tub requires a big step into it to take a shower but not impossible, plenty of counter space also. The TV has a couple of local stations to watch, nobody complained about that,
Overall everybody had a good time, weather was great, the sunsets were great, the water was great, the dog was exhausted from swimming and chasing that small pesky lizard.
Would I go back? Absolutely!! Great little house
Perfect stay for a low-key and amazing getaway at the lake
My parents and I enjoyed our stay overall at this house, especially because of the fantastic location, view of the lake, and privacy overall. The house itself is a bit run down and needs repairs, but it was as described and didn't interfere with our enjoyment of our stay. This was probably mentioned before but the water has a sulfur smell to it - my parents were unable to tolerate it and switched to bottled water for most things. I didn't mind, but would be nice if a new filter were placed or cleaning of the pipes? The directions to the garbage dumpster needs some updating and was a bit confusing. The place is not that complicated to get to once you figure it out, but the directions provided were a bit overcomplicated I'm afraid. I would have also liked to have seen more trash bags available and hand soap - we weren't prepared for the lack thereof. The house overall was cozy and incredibly clean when we arrived. The paddle board and kayaks available were fantastic as well. Wonderful neighborhood that we enjoyed walking through every day!
Thank you for your review, and we are glad you enjoyed all the water toys, the scenery and view, and were comfortable. I appreciate all your suggestions, and have updated a binder with better instructions for taking care of trash--complete with addresses, etc. No problem there. We always leave one trash bag in the bin, and one in the drawer above, to get guests started. It's a true convenience that White House Corner Store is only 5 miles away, where any needed necessities can be found. Yes, having a bit of liquid soft soap in bathroom is a good suggestion--point taken. Concerning the water: actually there is a filtration and softening system installed. It takes care of removing organic and inorganic metals, softens the water, removes sediment, and the sulfur smell is a challenge. Water can be left out to sit and the smell will go away. The water is typical for the area. The property is actually on top of a small but very rocky mountain hill, above a river valley(formally), and there is a challenge for managing the water. However, many people typically drink bottled water, and it is a recommendation, to bring your own, if one doesn't want to drink the faucet water, though it is perfectly safe. Repairs are attended to, but a message to us with anything in particular is always helpful.
Dated home/needs improvements
This is the third year in a row we have booked this house for our vacation but it will be the last. The house is very dated with the most uncomfortable furniture I have ever had to sit or sleep in. There are a multitude of bugs around the house and I actually saw a mouse, not to mention all his droppings all over the kitchen. This house is long overdue for a good cleaning, bug and mouse pest removal, central air, and new furniture. The only bright spot is the view, just nowhere comfortable to enjoy it.
I am thrilled you loved the view. And one other thing you liked, maybe—the rate? Thank you for your repeat business. Did you say something before? I am sorry that you felt uncomfortable. I can remind you that the description says “Rustic” (simple furnishings) and “Natural” (lots of privacy trees, equals some bugs). Although many guests have given our property five stars, it is NOT a five-star hotel. Our property is closed during Winter, and we do realize that pests appear, and we take care of them, though hesitant to use a lot of poison. I apologize for inadequate kitchen cleaning, and we will investigate that problem. As a sole owner of one property, I am not able to re-furnish every few years, especially since there are multiple visitors every season sharing the space. I prefer to keep it simple, and my improvements come in the form of baby steps. We rarely receive complaints about the furniture, although I realize it is simple and un-fancy. I have to say that I seek to rent to guests who want to enjoy nature, be outside, swim, enjoy the water, and not to those that need Wi-Fi and plush furniture. Again, I am sorry you did not have a good stay and I understand you will need a different kind of place for your vacation.
Beautiful sunsets, great kayaking
We had a wonderful and amazingly relaxing time at Smith Mountain Lake. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The best was that we had spectacular sunset views from the dock, the deck, or the living room couch. Early morning coffee on the dock was a great precursor to all the morning kayaking we were able to do. We visited the Booker T. Washington memorial as well as the Visitors' Center at the Smith Mountain Dam and highly recommend both, as well as Ramulose Ridge vineyard, which was great. Will definitely be back!
Just a few steps down from the cottage deck takes you to a private stationary dock where you can relax in the sun, enjoy clean fresh water for swimming and dock your boat. Dine in the evening on the outside deck viewing the sunset. Vacationers come from all over to fish where striper, bass, crappies and bluegills abound. Marinas abound where you can rent jet skies, motor and pontoon boats. The Smith Mountain Lake State park offers a beach, hiking trails, and daily planned activities for children. The Booker T. Washington National Monument as well as the Smith Mountain Lake dam all make for a fun trip.
