Shenandoah Valley Chalet Rental Photos and Description

Large greatroom w/loft open above. 3BR, 2.5BA sleeps 10+

'Schuss Platz' is a traditional ski chalet with a large deck overlooking the valley. It is located a short walk from the top ski lodge parking lot on a very desirable street. There are 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths located on the first floor with a greatroom. The cathedral ceiling greatroom has a fireplace, large dining table, bar and a kitchen. There is a large deck across the back with a view of the deer paths through clearings in the woods. Overlooking the greatroom is a large vaulted ceiling loft sleeping/play area adjacent to a bedroom and bath. The loft has sliding glass doors to a balcony at the front. This was originally designed to be a 5 bedroom house but the loft was opened up, as well as, the 2 bedrooms below were enlarged so there is alot of room in this 1800+-SqFt chalet It is tastefully decorated with some antiques co-mingled to give a homey feel. The side entrance opens into a mudroom for boots, coats and laundry. The opposite entrance opens into the greatroom. The house is on pilings with two catwalk entrances (1 with no steps!). Driveway is at street-grade with room for 3 cars.

About Dart Alsmeyer

Hi, we are Helen & Dick and family (3 generations). We puchased this lot decades ago, had a cedar shell erected and have assisted tradesman complete the interior to our liking. It has been a great place for the extended family to gather since they are spread from Philly to North Carolina and this is a good central location. We have enjoyed watching the resort grow and add amenities (especially liked the additional ski slopes and golfing). This property was recently opened up to vacation rentals and look forward to sharing our home away from home.

Dart Alsmeyer purchased this chalet in 1976

Why Dart Alsmeyer chose Shenandoah Valley

This is a superbly located chalet on the mountain near the top for views and proximity to the ski slopes. The open floorplan with the greatroom and loft above keeps everybody in close proximity and great for gatherings. There are 2 secluded and somewhat quiet bedrooms at the front of the house for those so inclined to sleep away their time here (not recommended though).

What makes this chalet unique

The gingerbread exterior makes you feel like you are at a Swiss chalet and the theme is carried throughout.

Great place to stay for pet owners

  • 5 of 5

The property was as advertised and the best feature was that the owner allowed dogs. Not many rental homes allow pets, so it's a real find to be able to rent a decent one. Another bonus was the ample parking space on a level driveway. This fact is important since the resort doesn't allow any on street parking. Also, many homes in the mountains have extremely steep driveways. While the house may be a bit dated, it was large and functional. The bathrooms were clean and the water pressure good. There was free Wi-Fi and cable. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family who are looking for a reasonably priced vacation rental at Massanutten.

Great stay, great location!

  • 5 of 5

The house easily accommodated 3 families of 6 adults and 4 young kids. It's on a quiet street with a nice brook that runs right along it. We opened a couple of the bedroom windows at night to enjoy the relaxing brook sound. We parked 2 SUVs and a full size sedan comfortably in the designated parking area in front of the house.

Wifi and cable were nice amenities, and the best part for us was having the kitchen to cook meals. Dishes, cookware, and everything you need to cook and eat are there. Mattresses are on the firm end, but certainly acceptable. Bring your own bath towels/soap/shampoo. Just a 1-minute drive to the golf course and a 6-8 minute drive to the water park. Close to everything since the house is inside the resort.

For the price, you can't go wrong. We'd definitely stay again!

Suited Our Needs

  • 3 of 5

Overall it suited our needs and had everything we needed for a weekend away with friends. For the price I wouldn't expect anything fancy. Our note to the owners would be to consider changing out the mattresses as all the adults slept pretty poorly and woke up sore. Not really fun to deal with when you are trying to have a good time.

Perfect mountain lodge!

  • 5 of 5

The kids joyful expression of "we're NEVER leaving!!" was a great way to start our vacation! They were able to take the dog exploring the grounds behind the house, which had a great view of the resort. It was the first ski trip for the kids and getting a peak at their destination for the weekend, right at sunset, was a pleasant surprise. The neighborhood was nice and very quiet. Upon arrival, my husband immediately started a fire in the wood stove that he maintained all weekend long! We had everything we needed to cook. The kids loved sleeping in the loft and we were very comfortable in our room. The mud room was perfect for dropping our boots and drying our ski gear. The washer and dryer were a bonus! We look forward to coming again next year and as long as they will allow us in the years to come!

The property was clean however, several items should have been looked at.

  • 2 of 5

There were several things which I think need to be fixed not make this property more interesting for future tenants.

Replacing the bed mattress upstairs would be important, fixing the patio door screen, fixing the frig door tablet...and a few more things that need a bit of care and love.

On a positive note, we appreciated the WIFI which worked really well for all of us.

All and all, a good stay, for the price, we figured we had a decent property.

Owner's Response: I am sorry you found some items inadequate and we will investigate these previously never mentioned items. The property manager found the screen door as operable as most sliding screen doors but will lubricate. Not sure which upstairs mattress you are referring to. The two twins and the pull out sofa's are typically occupied by children and not adults. Maybe that is why we never got a complaint about them. I do not know what a "frig door tablet" is.

Nice, clean and comfortable chalet

  • 5 of 5

Ample room for our family of four and our dog. Hosted a dinner with the bicycle racing team and plenty of room and dishes for a total of 11 of us. Dart was very prompt in responding to any questions via e-mail. We will come back again next year!
