About Laurel Brier
We are Hawaii residents who designed and oversaw the building of this home in 1998. Rob is a contractor in Hawaii and I am a vocational counselor with the State of Hawaii. Daughter Andrea (age 30) is in a PhD program at the University of Auckland and 28 year old son Lucas is an arborist/ farmer/hunter/fisherman/surfer living on the Big Island with his new bride, Mallory, his surf and business partner and nurse by profession.
Laurel Brier purchased this House in 1998
Why Laurel Brier chose Tairua
We honeymooned in New Zealand in 1976 and have been visiting ever since. We spent a good part of 1999 in Tairua with our children enrolled in the local schools. Tairua is the other paradise we live when we have the chance.
What makes this House unique
We swim, surf, fish, hike, bike, read, snorkle, jog, walk to town and rarely drive when we are in Tairua. We will go to Hot Water Beach and hike to Catheral Cove and ride the bikes to Pauanui and take the ferry back to Tairua. We usually take one big drive to visit another area. In November 2012 we hiked the Heaphy Trek and the Abel Tasman. In March 2011 and 2013 we spent time in the Bay of Islands and the Kauri forests, in April 2010 we did a several day bike ride in Otago and hiked the Kepler Trek. It is now May of 2015 and the whole family just returned from a two month stay in NZ. We toured the north and south island hiking the Kepler and Queen Charlotte Track and the coastal walkway around Cape Reinga. Lucas showed Mallory the magic of Aotearoa for the first time.

This property has a beautiful view. The kitchen was one of the best stocked ones I have experienced. It is located on a mountain side. The walk down to the beach is not for anyone who isn't in shape. There is no path from the house you have to walk a short distance up the road to a well maintained yet steep track. We were there in early, New Zealand, spring so the fact there was no central heating was a minor issue. There is a fireplace but wasn't worth lighting for the couple hours in the morning when heat was needed. The space heaters and heated towel bars were wonderful and greatly appreciated. I would suggest a few more space heaters for those who stay in cooler months. The beds were comfortable with plenty of pillow options. I have discovered most of the for rent by owner properties don't have great or comfortable seating, the same for this property. No comfortable place to sit and read on the rainy days. The main sofa was really soft and you would sink in really far. Very minimal outside seating, a couple adirondack chairs was about it. There was also a rough hewn small table and benches for dining I assume. I would recommend if you are going to arrive after dark that you have someone meet you in town and help you find your way. The location is amazing. Within a 45 min. drive there so much hiking and exploring you will wear yourself out. The local contact was wonderful. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this property. Just beware you are on a mountain side so there are stairs to everything. Sadly the ferry wasn't running when we were there.
Beautiful with the most breathtaking panoramic ocean views. Hiking to town and walking distance to everything. It's an adventure just waking up here!!
Gorgeous, peaceful setting with a spectacular view.
This is a beautiful house with spectacular views of the ocean and beach. It resides on Paku hill, which provides a 360 degree view of the Tairua area, following a short hike to the top. The house provides everything you need for a comfortable and peaceful stay. We enjoyed taking the Oceana walkway path down to the beach for walks and beach combing. Raewyn did an awesome job showing us around and helping us with local information, going out of her way to direct us to “surf n sand” for fresh fish.
Heaven in Tairua
Wonderful house with excellent kitchen. The TV is rather dated (no hdmi). Great views both down the beach and across the rocks out to the islands. A great base for a relaxing week in the Coromandel. Perfect if you surf or just like hiking.
Oh my god, that view!
The view from the house is breathtaking; every bit as good as the pictures promise if not better. It would have been so easy to do nothing but sit on that beautiful deck and watch the beach and ocean all day. But you do yourself a disservice if you don’t go out and explore the surrounding area. The house is lovely location to use as a base to venture out into the coromandel peninsula, Where we did fantastic hikes, beach walks, and even a railroad ride.
The home was impeccably clean. The Wi-Fi signal is strong, in the fireplace easy to use and so nice on the one rainy night that we had there.
We would love to go back and stay here again and I heartily endorse it for those of you that haven’t yet been.
