Mohonk Mountain Living!

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,250 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Alpine hideaway on the mountain- great home base for climbing, hiking, relaxing

Red Gate Cottage is situated on roughly an acre on Mountain Rest Road, the former carriage road to the famed Mohonk Mountain House. You'll feel far from the madding crowd in your charming alpine hideaway, yet welcome the short drive to town (New Paltz (2.2 mi.) and High Falls (8.0) and Rosendale (7.0) for a quick run to Rock and Snow for gear or a bite of authentic Japanese at Hokkaido.

The cottage's convenient location makes it a perfect home base for taking in all the Hudson Valley has to offer. The area's most important sites are all within a short drive: hike the Rail Trail, swim and picnic on the lake at Minnewaska State Park or hire a guide and rock climb the Gunks. Mohonk and New Paltz are also big with cyclists, kayakers and hikers.

Complimentary passes for two to the historic Mohonk Preserve, come with the house and provide you access to their magnificent trails. Venture a little further and enjoy Woodstock, take in the Zen Mountain Monastery, see a concert in Esopus or venture across the river to Bard, Frederic Church's Olana or the wonderful city of Hudson. Of course, antiquing and restaurants are abundant as are local produce and livestock.

Red Gate Cottage is tastefully decorated in a contemporary, rustic style. This cottage-style house has two bedrooms, one full bath, an open and inviting kitchen/living room and dining space made especially cozy with its centrally located wood stove and vaulted ceilings. Cook up a great meal with the locally grown organic produce or meats you procured at the Farmers Market in town or melt away the afternoon in the adjoining sun-room with lovely french doors to the deck and garden.

For late spring, summer and fall guests, our membership at the nearby Phillies Bridge Farm CSA is yours during your stay. A trip to Phillies Bridge Farm comes with magnificent views of the Gunks. Their almost weekly schedule of projects, informal concerts and festivities provide ways to engage with and even work on the farm.

Both bedrooms in Red Gate Cottage boast brand new extra comfy beds and fresh cotton linens. The east facing master bedroom invites the outdoors with its east facing exposure and a new patio door that opens up to the back yard. The utility room is equipped with washer and dryer. Finally, you're all set for work or streaming movies with the super-high broadband wireless internet available throughout the house.

The charm and the mountainside location of Red Gate Cottage provides for a cozy retreat for couples, a small family or anyone passionate about nature. If you're lucky, you may even hear or see our long-taloned neighbor, the Great Horned Owl, when he's on the hunt.

Chef Justin Bazdarich returns to Bradley Farm for one of Ray's famous summer farm dinners. Dine at Bradley Farm on July 10th for dinner by Chef/partner of Speedy Romeos, former Jean George chef and chef trainer for Vongerichten’s Culinary Concepts, a winner of the Starchef Rising Stars award in 2013. He has traveled the world for food, came and wowed us last year and is thrilled to be back! Sunday rate of $500.00 is all inclusive of stay and two seats at the dinner although dinner package is not required to rent the house for this weekend. Note: wine service sold separately. Only 55 seats available! More details here

note: pictures are being updated as we just completed painting the cottage white (from previous brown stain).

About Ginny

I am a recent Brooklyn native and have fallen in love with Mohonk mountain. Easy to do if you're a nature-lover. I look forward to all seasons for hiking, fishing, gardening and being part of the wonderful New Paltz community.

Ginny purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Ginny chose New Paltz

My cottage offers a little taste of mountain living. A great place for your 'arrival of the wild country of the soul.' Deer, rabbits, fox, birds and our owl, share space with us. I've also fallen in love with the stone on the mountain and recommend a little pre-read on the geology and glacial activity that occurred on the mountain, the reason for the massive boulders in the fields and around the yard.

What makes this cottage unique

Red Gate Cottage is a labor of love. A constant garden. I'm just getting started with transforming it to a unique alpine home. Look for updates on our progress!

Hovel "not so sweet" hovel

  • 1 of 5

This property imbues the word rustic with a whole new meaning. The dead plants and debris at the entrance should have given us warning. We were very disappointed in the 3rd bedroom. It contained a very uncomfortable pull out sofa that has seen better days. The sheets for all 3 beds were torn and we slept very fitfully due to the constant noise from the busy road. The wiring is, shall we say very creative and we were in fear of fire from the obvious code violations. You would be better off pitching a tent than staying at this property.

Great Weekend Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This house was adorable, very comfortable and close to New Paltz and Mohonk. The owner, Ginny, was very easy to get ahold of and we would definitely stay here again!!!

Depends on what you are looking for

  • 3 of 5

The cottage is very, very quaint and decorated in second hand chic. It is very clean and has everything one needs for those who like to cook. The owner has clearly put a great deal of loving attention into the house.

But if peace and quiet of the countryside is what a renter is looking for, it will be difficult to find it here. The house is located close to the road on a mountainside that has a steady stream of traffic. For those renters who don’t care about traffic noise then look no further.

Lovely warm mountain cottage

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our long summer weekend at Red Gate Cottage. The house is cozy, with multiple seating areas. There is an outdoor patio with a table - a sun trap in the morning, and a large dining table inside. We made use of both, cooking every meal but one at home, with the help of the well-stocked kitchen and Ginny's membership in an awesome CSA farm!! The location is great - very close to Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park for hiking (both have trails with beautiful views). Also close to New Paltz, Rosendale and other nearby towns, both west and east of the Hudson. The beds and linen are lovely - one of my daughters slept on the fold-out sofa in the tv room, and that was comfy as well. The main downside, as others have noted, is that the house borders the road to Mohonk, and has quite a bit of traffic during the day; nighttime it's quiet, so there is no problem sleeping, but the noise detracts a bit from what would otherwise be idyllic morning lounging on the large lawn. A small price to pay for a well equipped comfortable cottage in a wonderful area.

The home is beautiful and very well located. Ginny is a caring host!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay! We spent a full month here and truly were able to feel at home. Whenever there was an issue, Ginny was quick to take responsibility for it and take care of it and so we felt completely cared for and cared about while we were there. We have two kids 8 and 4 who enjoyed the house and it's garden. The location is amazing, close to New Paltz but also just minutes from Mohonk preserve for great hikes and swimming! We very much recommend this home for your next vacation!!!
