Charming and Private 11th Century Fortress - Florence (only 15 minutes away from the city)
This stunning historic manor, dating back to the year one thousand, is a wonderful location for couples who want to treat themselves to a romantic holiday in the peaceful Tuscan countryside.
The perfect place for anyone with a desire to regain a state of harmony and inner balance and ideal for lovers of art and good taste.
The choice to spend a week in this apartment is an extraordinary opportunity to breathe in all the charm of history and the past of a private, warm, and welcoming home.
Inside, there are original wooden ceilings and frescoes of the twelfth century, a time in which the property belonged to the Nasi family. The Nasi coat of arms can still be seen on the fireplace and on the exterior facade.
It was Lorenzo Nasi for whom, around 1506, Raphael created his famous picture “Madonna of the Goldfinch” (“Madonna del Cardellino”) as a wedding present. This painting is today exposed in the Uffizi Gallery after a 10-year restoration.
The manor, built in stone and with a wonderful exposure, stands in all its grandeur on a knoll of a hill south of Florence. It seduces guests all year round, giving every season an atmosphere that is always different but unfailingly exclusive and fascinating.
In winter, you will find the warmth of a lit fireplace and the welcome of luxurious and antique furnishings, accompanied by the functionality and comfort of modern appliances.
In summer, you can enjoy the many large outdoor areas, full of pleasant corners to relax and enjoy the natural coolness of the Tuscan hills in the hottest hours, perhaps just before venturing forth on some sightseeing of the surroundings or of the most famous cities of art. Siena, Arezzo, Pisa, Lucca, and Pistoia are perfect for daily excursions.
A rare find so close to Florence, this property has about 600 acres of olive groves, pastures, forests and vineyards; it is not uncommon to see squirrels, hares, deer, hawks, pheasants, etc.
The properties surrounding land with its many cultivated olive groves allows the opportunity to purchase extra-virgin olive oil (with the prestigious 'I.G.P.' certificate) at advantageous guest-only prices.
This scenario represents the ideal blend of natural surroundings and a proximity to Florence, a city whose rich cultural and artistic heritage is unique in the world and which is continuously alive with events and exhibitions.
This proximity favors the possibility to enjoy the pleasures of Italian, Mediterranean, and International cuisine, in addition to the ability to shop at all the ''big names'' (such as Ferragamo, Gucci, and Cavalli, to name but a few), as well as artisan and antique shops.
We suggest personal transportation. Public transportation (bus), however, is available at the bottom of the hill in the village of Villamagna, reachable with a 10-15 minute walk through the beautiful, hilly countryside on a charming footpath.
Note: Please remember, when calling, that Italy is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 6 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST) in the U.S.A. and Canada.
My name is Francesca, Neapolitan of birth but Florentine by adoption. I was thirteen years old when I saw, for the first time, the center of Florence through the window of a taxi.
My young eyes remained so captivated by her charm and her beauty that, even today, so many years after, lucid memories remain of the great desire to live in this extraordinary city.
For all sorts of strange and incidental circumstances, my family bought this estate in 1985. I supported my father in this wonderful adventure because, despite its austerity, this fortress immediately revealed such warmth as to make me feel at home.
Thirty-seven years after that first visit to Florence, I now live permanently in this extraordinary home, trying, day by day, step by step, to take care of this 'Old Lady' with the venerable age of a thousand years.
Francesca purchased this estate in 1985
The peace and quiet of this area have always helped me to feel all the charm and warmth of the magic of time that passed through these walls.
Not infrequently, when I am alone, I cannot help but hear the distant voices of time, of the many things that have happened, of those who have lived in this fortress believing to possess it, but like me and all those before me, I have just been seduced and lost in its austere charm.
I never fail to see these surroundings’ alluring myriad of color: the lush green of spring, the exciting yellow of summer, the warm red of autumn, and the sober brown of winter, especially when everything is covered with a white and romantic blanket of snow.
For me, there is nothing more beautiful to be done in relaxing moments than listening to the serene silence of the hills and the beauty of this enchanting nature.
I would love to share this magical, gracious, and intimate atmosphere, hosting all those who desire an unforgettable experience.
My wife and I stayed in Francesca's wonderful apartment the week of Christmas. It could not have gone any better. We were looking for a quiet and beautiful place to use a base while we were exploring Florence and its outskirts. We wanted somewhere convenient to Florence, but that also allowed us the tranquility of the countryside. The apartment met both requests easily. From the intricate ceilings to the frescoes to the tasteful (but comfortable!) furniture, everything was impeccable. Since we live in the States in a fairly new house, it was pretty incredible to be staying in such a warm and elegant setting, knowing that it was built something like 800 years ago. We had plenty of room to relax and really recoup here, especially in front of the fireplace, something we both truly appreciated after a particularly “full” museum day in Florence (and also after similar days in Chianti!). This was our first Christmas away from home in a long time and Francesca saw to it that we actually felt at home. We knew there would be the “basics” like good-quality linens, lots of hot water, plenty of firewood, and so forth, but it was a delightful surprise to find a kitchen stocked with the essentials and even to find a decorated Christmas tree upon our arrival, too. The great thing about the location here is that we were in the middle of the country side, but we could drive to Florence in about 15 minutes with our car, park it, and then take a bus into the historic center (you can’t drive into the city center during the day without a special pass) in about 10 minutes. Thank you so much Francesca for a lovely stay. We will definitely be back!
