Logistics wise, Jet Blue Airlines offers direct flights from NYC (JFK) to El Catey/Samana (AZS) every Wednesday and Saturday. Air Canada have direct flight every Sunday from Toronto and every Saturday from Montreal to El Catey/Samana (AZS).

The ride from El Catey (AZS) to Balcones is about half hour while from the capital, Santo Domingo and its Las Americas International Airport (SDQ), it takes about two hours through breathtaking scenery including Los Haitises National Park, and the northern Samaná mountain range.

Samana, the region, is more than just a beach. It has waterfalls, an amazing national park visited by humpback whales each year, amazing birdlife. Las Terrenas town is laid back, verging on shabby chic. A curious mix of French & Italian vibes with the Dominican's fabulous culture. Lots of smiling faces. The French so love the place they have been living here for 20 years and even set up their own school....they have the French Caribbean to choose from and yet they choose Samana. Makes you wonder, right?

RELAXING

We had a wonderful experience on our visit to Las Terranas!

The home of the Bowers is beautiful, clean and comfortable. The flexible help of the maid Ramona was great, she is accessible and very good at what she does...all accompanied with a smile.

When the jacuzzi didn't heat up the first night, they fixed the problem the next day. Other than that everything worked as it should.

We would highly recommend this home to anyone and the beach is very close and beautiful. Shallow and easy to get in and CLEAN! There are also lovely pools on the property.

When we went it was wonderfully quiet...but if you go on a DR holiday time you can expect that your neighbors will be enjoying themselves and it may be a bit noisy sitting on the porches, but the bedrooms have AC so you can sleep like a baby.

If you can go, dont think twice...you will love it, it is the best place to stay in Las Terranas!

Perfect!

We had a wonderful time! we were with our teenagers who had to work for their exams, it was very peaceful, the beach is amazing and long enough to have long walks. The village nearby is very beautiful and people are so kind!

Perfect vacation! You need a car!

Amazing stay at Balcones!

We had a wonderful stay with our 6 and 3 year old children at this penthouse at Balcones. It was perfect for our family. The downstairs area was comfortable and clean and the roof top area was spacious and spectacular. The new outdoor kitchen in great and the kids loved the jacuzzi. We love Balcones for the pools, great beach with kids area and, of course, Porto.

Mari was so easy to work with. Highly recommend all around!

SPECTACULAR! But, that isn't even close!

I am writing this review on behalf of my family (wife,kids, 6,7,8) and I. We traveled to this unbelievable dream property in June and stayed for almost three weeks. First, is wasn't long enough. From the first contact we had with the lovely owners (MariCarmen and Jason) we were at ease speaking with them. My wife and I are Medical professionals from the States and have traveled some before coming here. I looked for many weeks on VRBO trying to find the perfect gataway for my family and I. We found it here. The owners were so helpful on the phone prior to arranging our flights, MariCarmen even found us the cheapest flight we searched for. We flew into Samana Airport only 20-30 minutes away from the property as promised by Jason. He said we'd be swimming in the ocean some 40 minutes after our arrival at airport. Not quite because of the beauty of the whole place, we needed to see it to believe it first. Once there, we were met by the beautiful staff of Ramona and here assistant. She was able to give us all the answers to questions we had from eating, town, best beaches, freshest seafood to the Pharmacy. The property was more than you could ask for, almost too much for a vacation, but, we were very pampered by the daily cleaning or available cooking. The beautiful Terrace that now has the outdoor cooking area was not there during our trip. Although, there was some minor construction during our stay there, we did not mind. There were some minor appliances the kitchen could have had, but, no worries I found a place to get these small items for the next lucky guests to enjoy. The owners graciously reimburrsed us for any inconvience it caused us. The property is filled with ground staff and security that you will feel safe at all times. The beach was a two minute walk through lovely gardens. Town is a 6 minute drive along the beach so get a car. Use Nicolas at Fun Rentals, he is our friend now and speaks some English. The grounds and property are keep cleaner than you keep your home. The many pools were spotless and crystal clear. They were just amazingly gracious and I am endeared to them for their hospitality in sharing their fine property with us. Ramona treated us as family and we all cried upon leaving each other. Know some Spanish when there as you'll need it. Most local restaurants (are awesome by the way)have some knowledge of English to get by. We will make it yearly. MariCarmen, we've missed you and your awesome home every day. We hope to talk soon. RC

Balcones acts as a club for wealthy Dominicans that arrive at their luxury turnkey apartments for the weekend from the capital 2 hours drive away. This wouldn't have been possible a couple of years ago as it was a 6 hour drive away but thanks to a new highway it's now ''weekend-able''. What does that mean? Well, 2 things --- 1. wealthy Dominicans are quite demanding and want top end tasteful surroundings, furnishings and finishing so you stand to benefit 2. the region is unspoilt because it was so isolated until recently.

As well as the beautiful, kid friendly beach on the doorstep, there are 2 more great beaches on the other side of town 1. Playa Coson with its rollers - good for getting the salt in your hair. Don't miss lunch at Casa Luis - basic but great fish. 2. Playa Bonita again with decent waves and lots of restaurants on its boardwalk. Nighttime in Las Terrenas will probably see you end up at Pueblo de los Pescadores at least one evening - very laid back, great selection of restaurants, no heavy sell. Almost forgot, if you are looking to cook certain meals, then you'll be glad to know there's a couple of supermarkets stacking a large selection of imported foodstuffs

The Samaná región is much more than just beaches. Rent a car and get around. From mid Jan to mid March the humpback whales visit the peninsula and you can take boat trips out and get up close to these amazing creatures. The trip also typically takes in the national park ‘Parque de los Haiteses’ and Cayo Levantado. El Limón waterfalls are also nearby. Activities wise, if you like sports fishing, it’s easy to hire a boat and captain for a half day’s fishing trip from several point along the pensinsula. Other fun pasttimes include dinghy sailing, surfing and kite surfing so please don't hestitate to ask reception to point you in the right direction.

Just wanted to finish the description of the region with a mention of the village of Las Galeras and its idyllic beach, Playa Rincon, reached by small boat. Definitely worth a visit, and our suggestion for lunch would be El Cabito - perched on a sea-cliff with spectacular views.
