We're Austin-based and love the Hill Country in all seasons. The Hunt area is a long-loved vacation spot for Steve's family, including 3 generations of campers at Camp La Junta, Camp Arrowhead and Camp Mystic! We spend over 30 nights a year at the Ponderosa ourselves entertaining family, Austin neighbors, and friends from near and far.
Steve Brister purchased this lodge in 2004
We love the combination of having a spacious, comfortable vacation home plus the amenities of a resort where we don't have to get into a car to enjoy the riverfront, pools, and lots of other recreational facilities.
We're new to HomeAway, as we've relied on our property manager to generate rentals in the past - so we don't have many reviews here yet. But our guest book is full of really wonderful notes our Ponderosa guests have left over the years!
Our favorite spot in the house varies by season. In the winter, it's definitely sitting by the fireplace in the evening after a nice hike in the afternoon. In the spring and fall, it's sitting on the porch stargazing after a drive to see wildflowers and wildlife in the area. In the summer, it's on the screened porch playing Canasta and listening to the live music drifting over from the Lazy Days Canteen.
My family (large and 3 generations) love coming here every year, the space could not be more perfect and beautiful. We love the Guadalupe and we find so much to do for every age level. The house is however our favorite, space for all of us, great kitchen and space for us all to sit and eat. The openness allows us all to be together but each doing our own thing. There is space for small children, large children and grown-ups. Best vacation spot ever.
Our church group visited Ponderosa for a weekend retreat. It was absolutely wonderful! The home was beautiful done in a country motif. The kids loved the variety of games provided and of course the swimming pool. Others enjoyed fishing and canoeing along the river that seen from the house. The property itself was amazing! Those that stayed expressed the interest to return with their families. I highly suggest Roddy Tree Ranch for a perfect get away! I will definitely return soon!
A great space for a large family group, big rooms, comfortable, and well-kept. Senior citizens especially should be wary of tripping hazards around large sunken living area with seamless, invisible low ledges. We wished for colored tape on the edges after one octogenarian went down and other younger folks tripped also. The bunkhouse was a nice space for overflow guests. We all enjoyed the outdoor patios and everything to do out of doors within walking distance. This is an excellent house for a large group, but I hope no one gets hurt here!
Our family has had a reunion at this property annually for the last six years. The house itself has enourmous charm. Wood floors, cabinets aplenty, big tables for feeding our army of children, plenty of games, and a nice, open floor plan make the Ponderosa perfect for hosting large family gatherings. The back patio has a great view of the river and the lower portion of the property. There is also a small patio off of the master bedroom that overlooks the river and has a very intimate feel. We spend the majority of our time swimming in the river and the pool, and on the back patio cooking barbecue and visiting. The Lazy Days Canteen is an open air cantina on site that has karaoke and good live music on the weekends. A tunnel connects to the riverside portion of the resort so that visitors need not cross the highway that cuts across the property. The staff at Roddy Tree Ranch are very friendly, attentive and personable. Our family will be returning for many years to come.
Thank you so much for sharing your home with us, we had an AMAIZING time. The home was very clean and spacious, my husband said he got a work out just walking around the home. The view is impeccable, spent our morning drinking coffee and listening to the birds on the patio. Check in was convenient and the staff friendly. I most definitely recommend this to friends & family.
During our stay we took advantage of the canoes and rowed down to the dam where the kids played all day, then came back and played some more at the pool. There was so much more to do, however, we were all so content with what we did that we did not venture any further. Maybe next time.
Thank you again, looking forward to our next visit.

What a wonderful stay!! Perfect weather with warm days and chilly nights and a big yet cozy house to spread out in. One night, my husband and I relaxed in front of a roaring fire on the comfy couches with good books in hand. The next night, the fire provided backdrop while we snuggled up to watch a good movie all together. The kids enjoyed the basketball court, the books, the games, and exploring the grounds. We strolled down by the river, sunned ourselves on one of the outside porches, enjoyed the breeze on the screened-in porch, and totally relaxed. The wonderful huge dining table allowed us to linger comfortably at our meals and just delight in the time together. My husband enjoyed cycling those wonderful Hill Country roads and I enjoyed spreading out and cooking in the well-equipped kitchen -- I even tried out several new recipes which is something I don't usually have the time, space or energy to attempt. I only wish we had had more days so we could've tried out the grill. The pavilion is adorable and we look forward to coming back on a weekend so we can take in the live music on the grounds. I especially look forward to getting out on that sweet dance floor. What a great vacation spot! We'd hope to return with extended family in the future. The several living spaces and so much room in which to spread out make it ideal for both small and large groups. And my husband and I may be back on our own, too. I totally recommend this place!
