Casa Xano Xano is located half an hour from the colonial center of Oaxaca in the village of San Augustin, Etla, in the foothills of the Sierra Norte mountains. The house is high on a hill overlooking the village, valley, and the mountains. From the terrace you can see two colonial churches nestled in the trees. Our home has two completely separate apartments. The guest apartment has two bedrooms with queen size beds. Each bedroom has french doors leading out to private plant filled courtyard with gurgling fountain. There is a large kitchen with complete water purification system. There is a great view from the kitchen table looking out over the pool to one of the pink colonial churches in the valley. The comfortable, art filled, living room has a flat screen TV with cable. French doors open onto a second private terrace overlooking our vegetable garden and the mountains beyond. Wifi internet is throughout the apartment. There is a large pool house with outdoor living/dining and a gas grill. It is a perfect spot for cocktails and sunsets.
The area is full of daily adventures. For this reason it is more convenient to have a car. But we are only three minute walk from the collectivo stand. [ Five person taxis] It is a twelve peso ride into the city. We can arrange for airport pickups and private taxis for touring at very reasonable rates.
Basic shopping is available in the village as well as simple restaurants. In the next village there is a colorful daily market.
San Augustin is home to CASA, Center de las Artes de San Augustin. Housed in a magnificently renovated textile factory. There are revolving exhibitions and various classes. Next door is a wonderful paper factory. They are happy to walk you through the handmade process.
There are miles of beautiful trails in the hills around us.
We ask for a minimum of a three day stay. Unfortunately, we are not a house for small children.
There is weekly maid service. Laundry service available for a fee.
San Agustin is an authentic Mexican village. Birthdays are celebrated with fireworks, funeral processions through the village are led by brass bands. Roosters, burros and dogs, punctuate it all. It is truly a magical place. We will do all we can to make your stay memorable.
Penny and I are transplanted Brooklnites who retired in 2010. I taught theatre design and Penny was a decorative painter. We fell in love with Mexico on a vacation years ago. So, the years before retirement, whenever we could get down here, we toured all over, looking for a new home. We stepped off the plane and it was love at first sight. Our dogs Maggie and Molly will be only to happy to let you pet them.
Penny and Victor's house is a real home from all points of view. It is comfortable, clean and equipped with everything necessary for one day or 30 days. Colors and art are everywhere and reflect Penny and Victor's artistic personalities. The vegetation is luxuriant and the pool is unique. The village is pleasant and VERY clean. Walk the trails around and you will enjoy beautiful vistas. Collectivos to the 30 minute drive to Oaxaca are five minutes away and private taxis are easily arranged as well as airport pick up. Penny and Victor are great hosts, and their beautiful property is a perfect destination any month of the year.

Xano Xano is a lovely property and its owners are helpful understanding renters.San Agustin Etla is a pretty basic little village but worth a daily meander to get acquainted with the local dogs. The main attraction for us was the city of Oaxaca about 20 miles or a 15 minute ride in a colectivo away.Don't rent a car just pile in with the locals it is well worth doing. We visited during all the Saint's day celebrations which meant that every evening resounded to a 2hour firestick cacophony. They are noisy and prolonged, but hey what's a holiday without a whine?
This is a beautiful part of Mexico, not at all "resorty",and very multifaceted if you speak Spanish.A trip to Xano xano is at the opposite end of the holiday experience from the cruise ship.I highly recommend it.
Penny and Victor were wonderful hosts who made us very welcome in the gorgeous downstairs apartment of their home. The apartment itself is even more lovely than the photos online and very beautifully decorated. Penny and Victor were very accommodating and helpful with everything (i.e. showing us the village, helping us get started with food shopping and connecting us with Sebastian, a great driver who drove us into town a few times). We highly recommend this rental as an A++++ place to stay!
I cannot begin to describe how great this property is and what a wonderful time we had for 3 weeks staying there. The layout is private, secluded and cool. The small town outside of Oaxaca gave us a respite after a hectic day exploring the city Centro. Penny and Victor could not have been more accommodating and wonderful to us the entire visit. They bent over backwards to make sure we were comfortable. Truly, the experience was more like staying at a B&B! The pictures are lovely of the place but honestly do not do it justice. Both Penny and Victor have a flair, he with the garden which is just stunning and Penny with the apartment displaying her wonderful taste in local artisans. You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay in St. Augstin Eta and their villa. We hope to go back on our next trip to Oaxaca.
It is wonderful to have had a two month stay at Xano Xano and not be able to say enough good things about both the hosts and the accommodation. Without any question it is the most beautiful place where we have ever had the pleasure of staying. Our hosts, Penny and Victor, could not have been more helpful. Whatever rating scale one uses our stay was off the charts, it was that positive.
We were there for the two full months of February and March of 2015. From the time we entered the courtyard for the first time and had our initial view of the beautiful landscaping, the infinity pool and the outdoor living room and the two separate living units banked over each other and covered with vines and flowers we fell in love with Xano Xano.
When we entered what was to be our living area we found it to be very attractively decorated and, we discovered, comfortably furnished, with very tasteful art and pottery throughout. We really appreciated the two ceiling to floor bookshelves full of excellent literature and popular reading materials. Because we like to do a lot of our own cooking we found that the kitchen had everything we could possibly need in terms of cutlery, dishes, full size fridge, stove, microwave etc and many of the basic and other supplies used in preparing meals.
We chose not to rent a car and instead used the community taxi (collectivo) to travel in and out of Oaxaca on a regular basis. Thanks to the clever design of Xano, Xano we had three outdoor areas that were part of our exclusive living area. We took full advantage of the back patio, the front balcony, and the very attractive outdoor pallapa type living room with its multiple works of arts, crafts, and several different comfortable seating areas fronted by the, always available, lovely infinity pool.
Penny and Victor were a fountain of helpful information and advice. We followed their suggestions to the letter and never went wrong. What wonderful, kind and thoughtful hosts they were.
We very much enjoyed staying in the small town of San Agustin Etla. Despite our inability to speak Spanish we have always found Mexicans friendly and very hospitable. We always felt totally safe and secure there as well as in Oaxaca
Should our annual travels in our retirement years again include Mexico we will certainly want to see if Xano Xano is available for at least part of our trip. Leaving such great hosts and beautiful place was not easy.
I have never enjoyed a vacation as much as I did my trip to Oaxaca!! Victor and Penny made our stay at their home a unique and restful experience. They not only provided a clean, beautiful and relaxing space but they shared with us all the knowledge that they have about Oaxaca and its people.
I look forward to going back to their home as soon as possible! They also provided a delicious dinner for us on the day we arrived and had Sebastian pick us up at the airport. I felt so spoiled!
Thank you so much for all your generosity dear Victor and Penny, I feel I have a new set of friends in my life!!
