Greg and Megan 'Gregan' were married in Cabo on September 1, 2012! We love San Diego and live in Northern California. Megan decorates as a hobby and Greg plays beach volleyball. We love to share our favorite places with people who are new to San Diego.
Greg Verhey purchased this condo in 2007
We chose Aloft on Cortez Hill because it is an Oliver McMillan (OM) building. OM buildings use concrete instead of wood construction so the units are quieter and safer. You can immediately tell that OM went the extra mile to create quality and style. The vibe at Aloft is cool and relaxed; ZEN.
The city must have asked the builders to do something for the community in exchange for the property because they built a super cool little park and jungle gym for kids. The project is called 'Tweet Street' and is focused on drawing kids, birds and butterflys. They don't exactly drown out the airplane noise when you are outside but we dig the integration of city, nature, and urban living.
If I could be assured every vacation rental was like this, I wouldn't ever stay in a hotel again. The loft is beautiful and nicely decorated. The photos show how it really is. The owners are nice too! I'm a photographer so I really liked the light in the unit. There are floor to ceiling windows (2 stories tall) with a view of Balboa Park. The freeway is there too, but the windows are well insulated and you can barely hear the cars even at night. Everything is there that you need including a washer/dryer. If you like to read there is lots to choose from. Toni Morrison, Camus, Faulkner, David Sedaris and short stories. I read Freakonomics, a book I have been waiting three years to buy because I'm too cheap to buy the hardback. But read quickly, you can't take the books with you. It is San Diego so I recommend a car although you are pretty close to the Gaslamp District and Hillcrest. I'll definitely stay again.
We loved staying in Greg's place. The apt is very comfortable and true to photos. The pool and hot tub were a lovely bonus and it's an easy walk to Little Italy or the Gaslamp. Greg is a wonderful and gracious host. He was quick to respond to any questions we had and made sure we had a comfortable stay. Highly recommend!
Greg is amazing and very helpful !
The loft is exactly as it is on the description and pictures. Well equipped and cleaned !
We were happy to go back "home" after long days and I believe to be the nicest feeling to get from a temporary home :)
Don't think about it twice - just book !
We stayed for a month while looking at real estate downtown. While it's a bit of a hike back up the hill, we walked all over downtown, using our car only to go to Ralph's supermarket. The loft is comfortable and spacious and has everything you need. We could watch planes on their final approach at all times of the day and night, yet there was really no noise issue since they could barely be heard. The same goes for the I5 freeway. The pool and huge spa were nice amenities, although the pool was barely long enough for laps. The water was turned off in the building a few times while they addressed a plumbing problem, and no notice was posted. Greg, the owner, who checked on how we were doing multiple times, was on it right away and even offered compensation for the inconvenience. His interest in his guests was exceptional.
The apartment is very comfortable and perfectly located for a months holiday in San Diego. Its huge windows overlook the I5 freeway and Balboa Park with planes flying by at tree height every five minutes. Sounds awful?! No, it's dead quiet with the windows closed (there's good and quiet air conditioning) and the passing cars and planes are strangely entertaining. The location is ideal, five minutes walk into the Park with its miles of trails, museums, restaurants, and people-watching, and 15 minutes down to the waterfront. Two minutes drive gives access to the marvelous SD freeway system which will take you out to La Jolla, Coronado, Escondido, Mission Trails or anywhere else in a very short time without having to drive though suburban streets. The apartment is very well equipped and Greg is a most helpful host. Although we didn't use them in March, there is a pleasant pool, hot-tub and BBQ area for summer enjoyment. All in all, just great.
This is a perfect place to stay! We stayed for a month and had a wonderful time. Gregg is always there for you.I have been using VRBO for years have to say this is my favorite place! Plenty of room when you have guest, they told us very comfortable pull out, and I could of stayed in bed all day the bed upstairs!
Thank you Gregg for sharing your slice of paradise!
As a travel nurse, I have lived in many places and dealt with countless landlords. Greg was readily available any day of the week and made our transition into the condo seamless. All utilities, laundry, and parking were included, which is a rarity for downtown. The gym, pool, and fire pit were an added bonus to enjoy after a long shift. All the tenants were friendly and helpful. The condo itself is close to the fabulous restaraunts of Hillcrest and nightlife in Gaslamp. The baseball stadium is straight down the street as well. I personally will never forget watching the planes fly in over Balboa Park at sunset. I can confidently say this loft was perfect.
