We live on the wondrous Grand Traverse Bay with our two mutts. Love the water, the great city and this fabulous, naturally beautiful and under-appreciated great northwest corner of Michigan.

The renovation is a truly special place and so close to an abundance of activity in the greater Grand Traverse area.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner all available at fine establishments throughout the Mercato, the ground level shopping area. Choices of wine, coffee and food, all without leaving the campus.
My friend got married in Traverse City so a group of four of us stayed in this condo and we loved it. There are cute shops and nice restaurants on the ground floor. It was a perfect location whether driving or taking a taxi places. John is very quick with responding and very friendly. The condo was very clean when we arrived and had all the amenities you need! I highly recommend this condo!!
We stayed Aug 2015 and had such a great experience in this condo, we contacted the owner and booked again for June 2016. We were very happy with the ease of communication with the owner, as well as cleanliness, and amenities of the condo.
I was on crutches one visit and the condo was still easy to access.
Having stayed in the condo for a week in August 2015, I can confirm everything positive that has been said in previous reviews. John and Ellie are delightful, responsive owners. The condo is immaculate. The bed is comfortable, which is imperative for me. Although there is abundant activity at the Commons and within easy walking, the condo and grounds are extremely restful. I will definitely be back!
Location isn't everything but it sure helps to be in an incredibly beautiful rehabbed Psych hospital condo with great restaurants and shops and great art covered basement walls. We had ready access to downtown Traverse City but could have just as easily spent much of time in our building. The owner was great and talked us into a smooth landing as "Siri" was a little confused. He even facilitated the return of two phone chargers we overlooked as we reluctantly left our beautiful accommodations. Would very happily recommend this place and this owner to anyone!
My husband and I spent 9 days in this lovely condo, and hope to repeat our stay. The owner is very easy with communication, and met us at the property to give us keys and show us through the unit. (He lives locally--a big plus.).The unit is very charming: spotlessly clean, nicely decorated, and an ideal size and layout for a couple. The living area includes a small but comprehensively stocked kitchen, and separate bedroom with an extremely comfortable bed. The wifi service worked beautifully, and the condo was very quiet. We have stayed at The Commons once before, and it is absolutely our preferred location in Traverse City. The repurposed former mental hospital has been wonderfully restored to include not only great apartments, but fantastic other amenities:a couple of excellent restaurants, a coffee roaster/shop, winery, artisans bakery, distillery, boutiques, etc. The grounds are extensive, and include wooded walking trails as well as a vast lawn. While the property as a whole has the feeling of being set apart from the town. I walked to the Warehouse district in about 15 minutes, and was in the center of town in 25. Driving: 5 minutes. It is worth noting that the condos at The Commons are approved for short term rentals such as found on VRBO, saving one from the anxiety and mishap that can occur when the rental violates the association rules (trust me, I know). The quality, location and convenience of this condo, along with its value, make it a superior choice to most of the local hotel options. I highly endorse it, and hope to stay again.
My wife and I stayed here this year for a week in July. We had previously stayed in John's other unit and decided to try this one out this year. Both are great units, and we were not disappointed with this unit either. Again, this location is very close to downtown Traverse. We bring our bikes each year to get back and forth from the condo to downtown. There is bike storage locations on site. Parking is also not a hassle at the unit. There are plenty of shops and restaurants to check out right around the unit. Our favorite has to be the bakery just a couple of steps from the parking lot. I also went on a few runs around the condo units. There are established trails all around the complex which made for an enjoyable experience. The unit itself is clean and comfortable. We use the kitchen for certain meals and all the necessary utensils/pots are provided. This unit does not have access to a deck, but John's other unit does. That was not an issue for us. Working with John is great. He's great about getting back to you if you need anything. We had an issue one day with the television and within minutes of calling John he was on the phone with the cable company resolving the issue. He even call me back to confirm the issue was resolved. We like to travel to Traverse every year and have enjoyed working with John since 2013. I'd recommend this place to couple traveling, but you can easily make it work with a small family if the kids or other guest don't mind the fold out couch or an aerobed in the living room. There's also wifi so you can still feel like you're plugged in -- even though my favorite part about the Traverse City area is just relaxing and forgetting about all the emails for a while!
