About Dale and Vicki Strohmaier

Vicki and I live and work in Delaware, Vicki as a nurse liaison for our local hospital ER and I in custom home sales. We have been traveling to Maine off and on for the last 28 years, first staying in motels, then bed and breakfast and lastly in a cottage in Blue Hill we found on HomeAway. We have fantasized about owning a cottage in Maine and during each trip we scouted properties for sale. In 2010 we found Mill Cove Cottage on the internet and went to take a look at it during our fall trip. It was a mess! Weeds filled the lot, window panes were falling out, the roof was shot, there were no cabinets, it had an old gas range and bar sized refrigerator, a toilet and claw foot bath tub sat in the middle bedroom! But we fell in love with the location and the uniqueness of the cottage and settled on it in December.

The challenge became how to transform this run down gem into a desirable retreat for couples wanting a special getaway, doing this from our home 700 miles away! By pure luck we found Marilyn (the property manager) and Arthur. Arthur was able to take our amateur drawings and sketchy ideas and work his magic. In the spring of 2011 we arrived to apply the finishing touches. In July of 2011 our first couple arrived. They were newlyweds!

Mill Cove Cottage is designed, furnished and supplied for couples. There is no room for children, friends or in-laws. The couch is not a sleeper! It is a retreat, a getaway, a sanctuary. It is for getting to know each other better and for reflections of the past. It is for young or young at heart. It is for relaxing and exploring. It is for two people who want to spend time together.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Dale and Vicki,

The cottage was amazing! It exceeded our wildest expectations. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay there! Everything was so wonderfully clean and new, and as soon as we walked in the door, we both truly just felt right at home. The red binder was extremely useful and helpful with its plethora of information. It was really nice and appreciated that you took the time to put that together for

us. It really made adjusting to the area extremely easy considering we were to be there for such a short period of time.

- We really didn't eat out too often, we went food shopping when we got there, and made a lot of meals at home in the cottage, and ate overlooking the beautiful sunsets every night! We used the grill to cook steaks one night, and that worked wonderfully, and was very easy to use.

We only had to use the air conditioner on the day we arrived. Everything was sealed up when we got there so it was a bit hot and stuffy inside, but we quickly opened up all the windows and it cooled down comfortably in a very short span of time. Other than that, we didn't have to use it at all. The breeze that comes through was wonderful, and kept us at a very comfortable temperature all week long. - We both had such a wonderful time at Mill Cove Cottage and would

love to come back and stay there again. Thank you so much, once again, for allowing us this wonderful opportunity. It was my first time in Maine, and I could not have asked for a better experience. Hope you are both safe and made it through Hurricane Irene without any damage.

Perfect Retreat for Two

  • 5 of 5

Mill Cove Cottage was such an amazing find, and Dale and Vicki were great to work with! The cottage itself is very well-constructed, well-appointed and so comfortable. It's truly perfect for two. We loved enjoying the view every morning with a cup of tea, watching the tide go in and out, and seeing the sun set over the cove. We even saw a seal in the cove!

It was about a 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia which was perfect for us. My husband and I loved being able to escape the "busyness" of Bar Harbor to Dale and Vicki's retreat after long days of hiking Acadia and sightseeing. Dale and Vicki had excellent recommendations for restaurants as well (Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound and Sylvia's Cafe's cinnamon rolls on Wednesdays, to name a few :)). Even though the kitchen has every type of dish, gadget and utensil one could possibly need, we didn't end up cooking because the restaurants in the area were so good!

Thank you for sharing your special retreat with us! We highly recommend Mill Cove Cottage!

A piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

Oh my goodness! Dale and Vicki your lovely haven was all you said and more! The peacefulness of the cove and washed over us the first time we pulled in the drive. Every hour there was filled with a new surprise and blessing. We so enjoyed hiking the trails in Acadia, but especially Schoodic Point. We loved being able to get away and enjoy nature. The hike to the Anvil thru it's elvish moss covered woods on a foggy afternoon was glorious! The kayak was fantastic! Saw eagle and seal when we paddled to the island. Cooked our very first (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th!) lobsters from the Winter Harbor Co-op in your wonderful pot. Loved just sitting and watching the tide roll in and out. And the campfires topped off the day! Time for cards and games, reading, and painting. Your cottage and grounds are so clean and well kept, stocked with everything and anything we needed. What a joy! So hard to say goodbye. Thank you thank you for sharing your slice of heaven!

Amazing Find!

  • 5 of 5

Your cottage is the perfect get away for two people! It's very private and away from the busy tourist areas, but close enough to visit them. The location is very central to most must see locations; Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Schoodic Point and many others, (about 30 away). The Cottage has all the necessities and much more! The view from the bedroom is beautiful and the sunrise wakes you every morning, no need for an alarm clock :) The bed was very comfy, slept good all week long! We really enjoyed taking the kayak out, we felt like we had the whole area to ourselves. There was no one else out on the water anywhere near us! Lots of wild life, lots of different kind of birds and we watched the deer cross at low tide. It was very interesting seeing the tide go in and out. Very nice local restaurants near by and many more in Ellsworth, which is a short 10 or 15 minute drive. There are several grocery stores in Ellsworth also, which is very convenient. We definitely recommend this cottage and we hope to make it back there one day! Thank you Dale and Vicki for sharing your beautiful cottage!

Unique and charming.

  • 5 of 5

For more than 25 years my wife and I have come up from Boston to enjoy the Mt. Desert Island area many times. After mostly staying in bed & breakfast inns, we thought that we would try something different this time. We were not disappointed! Mill Cove Cottage is both charming and relaxing. Just what we were looking for. We especially enjoyed the view of the cove.

As usual during our visits up to this area, we found plenty to occupy our time. Besides our usual activities that range between hiking and shopping, we added a few Bocci matches. This was a first for us up here. Our Bocci matches were moved to the park in Hancock center around the gazebo because of its relatively flat surface. We also made a sentimental journey over to the Schoodic area where we had spent some time many years ago with our now grown up daughters when they were still quite young.

The weather started out rather warm, but Saturday was a cool, rainy day. This was perfect because we had planned to stay near the cottage on Saturday, our final day, to rest and prepare for our drive back home anyway. We passed our day quietly reading, cooking and watching the tide come and go. We will recommend Mill Cove cottage to friends and family seeking similar experiences.

Perfect place for 2 people.

  • 5 of 5

This cottage has everything that 2 people could ask for in order to enjoy a relaxing vacation or getaway. The view of the cove is fantastic, especially from the bedroom, which is located on the second floor with a picture window. The planting beds and grounds are very well kept and add to the charm of the cottage. The kayak is especially nice for a relaxing ride on the cove. We also enjoyed cooking our own lobster at the cottage. I would highly recommend Mill Cove Cottage to any couple who is looking for a relaxing place to get away from it all.

Our desire to have this lovely cottage all to ourselves forever is the only possible reason I considered giving it a poor rating! But I couldn't do that, because this little slice of heaven was just as advertised and provided both a restorative respite and easy access to Maine's eclectic offerings. The only difficult thing about being at this clean, stocked-to-the-gills cottage for a long weekend is deciding between the serene surroundings of its own grounds--including the kayak-accessible water and a fire pit atop a picturesque bluff--and the many fun activities possible in the wider environs; however, Dale and Vicki kindly guide Maine first-timers to the area's highlights and even tailored their recommendations to our style as a couple after getting to know us a bit via email. Never having rented a home online before, my wife and I were a bit nervous. But the Strohmaiers put us at ease with and gave us faith in the process, and four days in this idyll was our reward! In short, we heartily recommend this cottage to any couple and defy them to find a flaw!
