|Minimum Stay||5 nights|
Adjacent to the Nature Reserve, on a hilltop in Barrio Monte Carmelo; sleeps up to 6 with 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2 large wrap-around terraces with an outdoor dining area and built-in gas grill. Our beautiful, architecturally-designed home offers incredible views in all directions with breezes to match. Wake up in the glorious morning to unobstructed views of the Reserve and the island of Culebra, and even St. John and St. Croix on a clear day, or have a cocktail on the front balcony while you watch the lights of Vieques and main-island Puerto Rico twinkle in the distance. The countryside location is in the center of the island so you can be just about anywhere in 5-20 minutes — from the island's best beaches to restaurants and shopping. Our Viequense neighbors are friendly and respond in kind to a smile and a wave. Friendly dogs, wandering chickens and free-roaming horses are all a part of day-to-day life in Monte Carmelo, so if an insulated resort-like experience is what you're looking for, then our house is not for you. But if you are looking to experience real-life Vieques in the comfort of a safe and stylish house, then we have no doubt you will love it here. Free wifi and hard-wired computer access, washer & dryer. In high season, if only the master bedroom is rented with the house, the per-night rate is $200. The nightly rate is $220 for the house with all 3 bedrooms. Lo-season is $185 per night for 1-3 bedrooms. Note there is always only 1 party in the house at a time.
We are Jamie and Perri and we live in Brooklyn, NY when we're not in Vieques. Jamie has a wine shop and Perri is a graphic designer. We love Vieques and we can tell you all of our favorite not-to-be-missed places so you can enjoy it as much as we do!
Jamie & Perri purchased this house in 2006
We love our mountain-top location with it's constant breezes and and unstoppable views of the Nature Reserve, the distant islands, and Vieques itself. It's always comfortable, with no need for air conditioning, and when the mosquitoes are biting in town, the breezes keep them away on the hill. As a bonus, our house is located in the center of the island so it's equally convenient to get to just about anywhere you'll want to be.
• unobstructed views of the Nature Reserve, distant islands, Vieques and Puerto RIco
• constant breezes
• Completely renovated, unique architectural design inspired by Spanish-Colonial detailing, featuring a plethora of traditionally-made tile and woodwork.
• 2 large rear terraces, a front balcony, and a built-in outdoor gas grill
• located in the center of the island making all destinations within 10-20 minutes
We have been fortunate to have blogger extraordinaire, Cassie of Hisugarplum.com, and her lovely family as our guests twice this year. She took some fantastic photographs of the house that we would love to share with you. See Cassie's blog post about El Dormilon at:

This home is well thought out and clearly a lot of love and attention has gone into this property.
D house is perfect!!! We are very descrimating travelers, have our own travel app and blog (Kate's Goodness), and we know Goodness when we see it. This is Goodness. Here are top-10 reasons:
- terrific hosts (house manager Mariam is great - warm, welcoming, punctual); all communications timely and informative, no issues
- marvelous "architecture digest" house - huge windows, balconies and terraces, open spaces, beautiful tiles, perfect comfortable furniture, everything is so well designed and thought through
- every detail is just right, every detail matters
- great location on top of a hill, with amazing vistas of the island and the sea
- real Vieques neighborhood, very central and so close to gorgeous beaches, the town, airport, everything...
- beautiful garden with own papaya and pomegranate trees
- outside grill to cook fresh sea food straight from the fish market only 10 min away
- board games and great library of vacation books
- wifi works super well
- everything you need for the beach
We can't wait to go back. So lucky to have discovered this place. Thank you for having us.
I rented El Dormilon for a week to celebrate my father's retirement. The home is beautifully renovated - the tile work is beautiful, the outside access and views cannot be beat (you are on the edge of a neighborhood and the preserve) - and the layout was perfect for my father, sister, and me. The common floor (living, dining, decks, kitchen, full bath) allowed us to spend a lot of time together in the mornings and post a day at the beach. I'd highly recommend going to the Farmer's Market and looking for local produce! The kitchen is stocked with a coffee maker and all of the supplies you will need for cooking.
I've been visiting the island for many years and this was the first time I rented a house. I'm glad we did, as you cannot get the same neighborhood and home-like feel, yet have the privacy and space you will get in a hotel or guest house. You will need to rent a vehicle, but you should do that anyways so that you can explore the many beaches the island has to offer!
Miriam will welcome you to the house. She's absolutely wonderful and will go out of her way to be helpful and to ensure you have a comfortable stay while in Vieques. I'd also highly recommend you work with Juergen from Abreeze for a car rental. I've rented from several places on the island and he was, by far, the easiest to work with, his prices are more reasonable, and you won't have a Jeep that matches all of the rest of the tourists' jeeps on the island. :)
Not to miss while in VQS: Buen Provecho Market (great deli sandwiches for the beach), Al's for sunset, Coqui Fire Cafe, Tin Box, Conuco, El Quenepo, and El Blok rooftop. Playuela and Caracas are my favorite beaches, the former being a short hike, but it's worth it! If you want shade, get to Sun Bay early and set up under one of the palm trees.
My husband and I spent 10 days at El Dormillion. Finding the house was pretty tricky the first couple of times and the road up had many pot holes, horses and dogs. Once we arrived we felt like we were in paradise. The house is amazing and the posted VRBO pictures were great and representative, but couldn't possibly do it justice. The interior attention to design is remarkable. Gorgeous tiles, textiles, fixtures and furniture that match the environs. The kitchen, bathrooms were well equipped and we made several dinners, ate all breakfasts and some lunches at the house. We really appreciated the brand new washer and dryer! The view from both verandahs was amazing. Waking up to the sun rising and overlooking the undeveloped refuge. The Tradewinds blew pretty steadily and there were always local dogs, coquis and roosters making noise. With earplugs for sleep and within a day or two just took it in stride. The house is a great location in-between Isabel and Esperanza and very close to the refuge beaches! Of course there were beach towels, chairs and snorkeling equipment to use. A jeep rental is a must and using ABreeze, as recommend by the owners, was seamless, tho pricey. The owners provide an excellent document which helped jump start our planning and actual trip. Before our trip the owners were very very responsive to all our questions. The home's caretaker Miriam was very attentive when we had questions. Vieques offers so much to explore...and staying at this house made our vacation!
We took our adult sons & partners to Vieques over the holidays, and the 5 of us stayed at this lovely house. It couldn't have been nicer! The trade winds blew constantly, keeping us cool and comfy, and keeping the bugs at bay. The views were spectacular, the beds were comfortable, and we had everything we needed for a week's stay. Perri was kind, helpful, and so prompt--the house was better than advertised! Yes, the rooster drove us crazy. Yes, the dogs were annoying. But really? If that's the worst thing you can complain about.....count your blessings! Miriam had done some shopping for us since we were coming in on Christmas Eve, and that helped a lot. We visited beaches (loved La Chiva the best), birdwatched (the house could use a pair of binoculars for us bird nerds!), explored the fort in Isabel, the stores in Esperanza, scootered, kayaked the biobay (the most fantastic experience of the vacation), played a lot of games, and relaxed. Ate at Belly Button's, Duffy's, Bananas, and Conuco (Isabel). Cooked some at the house and were grateful for the grill. Picked key limes and made the best homemade limeade ever! As others have mentioned, were glad for the in-house laundry facility.
The pictures here are absolutely accurate, but nothing compares to the smell of the wild cilantro, flowers, and sea air. We miss it! Thanks for sharing your lovely home with us!
Our stay at Casa El Dormilon exceeded expectations. The house is beautifully designed and decorated, and thoughtfully appointed. The views and surrounding gardens are absolutley stunning, and Perri and the house manager could not have been more accommodating. We had a fantastic stay and were not ready to leave. Highly recommended!
Vieques is a small, unspoiled island 7 miles east and a world away from the main island of Puerto Rico. Our neighborhood, Barrio Monte Carmelo, is a rustic, local, hilltop community centrally located between the Island's best beaches and the towns of Esperanza and Isabel Segunda. In 10-20 minutes you'll be on the beach in the Nature Reserve or at one of the island's best restaurants. Our Viequense neighbors are friendly and respond in kind to a smile and a wave. Friendly pups, chickens and free-roaming horses are all a part of day-to-day life in Monte Carmelo, so if an insulated resort-like experience is what you're looking for, than our house is not for you. But if you are looking to experience real-life Vieques in the comfort of a safe and stylish house, than we have no doubt you will love it here. We especially love the house in the peaceful early-morning hours when the light is glorious and the birds are singing!
