Avoid expensive booking fees and book directly through us - the owners. We can answer all your questions before you pay!

NortherNest, a favorite rental by vacationers for years, has been thoughtfully updated and equipped to fully cater to your next relaxing & memorable Maine vacation. If you think you have had great vacations in Maine in the past, just wait until you stay at NortherNest and experience its amazing beach & views!

NortherNest is ideally located. Depending on where in the park you are headed, anywhere in Acadia National Park can be reached with a 5 to 30 minute drive. A 20 min. drive reaches the many boutique shops & restaurants in the village of Bar Harbor. A 15 min. drive will access the area’s largest grocery shopping in downtown Ellsworth, as well as an L.L. Bean outlet. These are just the immediate amenities. The list of potential daytrips from the Nest is nothing short of dizzying. The Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia, historic Castine, the gems of the Blue Hill Peninsula, all the sights & sounds of authentic fishing villages & miles of unspoiled shore Down East and stunning Campobello Island in Canada are all effortless day trips. To see it all is to live a lifetime at the Nest!

NortherNest offers comfortable and clean year-round lodging on the waters of Western Bay in Trenton, Maine. Overlooking the mountains of Acadia on Mount Desert Island, a manicured lawn surrounded by many professional gardens sweeps down to the private beach, which is without a doubt, ONE OF THE FINEST BEACHES IN THE ACADIA AREA. It is also just about as “kid friendly” as beaches come in Maine. Swimming, kayaking, sunbathing & beachcombing (low tide is great fun!) do not get much better anywhere in Maine than at the Nest’s extensive gravel beach. Want a truly memorable experience? Bring your camping gear and tent out on the beach. The loons lull you to sleep & the sunrise greets you in the morning. Simply unforgettable…

Keep an eye out for loons, porpoises, seals, ospreys, great blue herons & eagles ~ all are common sights at the NortherNest beach. A flock of turkeys moved in in 2011 and can often be seen. Moose, bear, fox & deer have all also been seen at the Nest, but are more rarely seen than the other wildlife. The deck, yard and surrounding marsh bustles with the countless songbirds that Down East Maine is graced with. Red squirrels and chipmunks often scurry over our toes while gardening at the Nest. They are the true clowns of the garden! Kayakers will revel in conserved Alley Island. About a 20 min. row away, Alley Island offers a deserted, pine clad island to explore with remnants of an old farmstead and wild beaches & shore. For more experienced boaters, across Western Bay (about an hour row) there is a seal rookery on the shores of the Blagdon Preserve in Bar Harbor. Be sure to not get too close to the mother seals raising their pups. The seals need their space and they will surely come to greet you before you need to get too close to their resting rocks. The eastern views at the beach spoil you with sunrises over the mountains of Acadia, while the long, evening light warms the bay and the mountains with tones of sunset. The orange moon rising over Acadia as viewed from the Nest’s beach & deck is nothing short of spectacular. Your experiences here will last a lifetime. Well-behaved pets are most welcome at NortherNest. There is a secure, fenced dog yard just off the deck. It is a breeze to let your pooch out from the sunroom for some fresh air or a potty. The Nest’s beach is a world class Frisbee beach. Fido will not miss his daily exercise with an evening ball or Frisbee session before dinner on the day you tackle one of the park’s challenging ladder trails. The Nest is owned by dog lovers and has been crafted with convenience and comfort of your furrier family members in mind.

Eating takes a special turn for the fun at the Nest. Our beach campfire grill is the ultimate spot for a lobster shore dinner or any other campfire meal that you can conjure, for that matter. Mussels can be harvested off of our “Mussel Rock” when the tide is low. Forgot your lobster pot at home? No worries, we offer our tenants all the bells & whistles of shore dining cookery. You will pick fresh & delicious produce from our 9 organic vegetable gardens. Our gardens have been planted with specific varieties in mind to best suit our tenants’ stay. Our raspberry patch brims with fruit for most of the summer. Morning coffee on the beach is a timeless experience. After ten years of sipping coffee in the summer morning still, we still jump at every chance to do so. You will too…

The yard at NortherNest is beautifully landscaped with an abundance of perennial gardens. A water garden peacefully gurgles with goldfish & frogs as residents. Those with a green thumb will wonder at the botanical spectrum that has been compiled. The home’s owners are both certified Master Gardeners & have amassed an impressive collection of flora. All seasons offer a different feel & look. Walking through the gardens to the beach is an addiction will not want or need to break!

NortherNest can be available off-season, as well. Please call for dates & rates.

Short term rentals (3 night minimum) are o.k.off season (Early Spring & Quiet Time after Columbus Day).

Our goal is to make sure that you enjoy your stay in Down East Maine as much as we love living here. We seek to quickly re-acquire our group of repeat tenants that filled the Nest week after week for many years. We would love for you to be one of the lucky ones! If you have questions about NortherNest or our amazing area, do not hesitate to ask. As operators of a local real estate business, there is not much we don’t know about the area and we love to share our knowledge!

We look forward to seeing you at the Nest…

P.S. Let us know if a week you desire is unavailable - we will inform you of any cancellations.

About Julee Swanson

Julee & Pete Swanson are the proud owners of NortherNest. Julee is a local real estate business owner and Pete is an estate gardener & horticulturalist. They are avid gardeners and have several furry friends. They love to share their knowledge of the area with NortherNest guests and will gladly offer tips for fun and interesting places to go that others may miss.

Julee Swanson purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Julee Swanson chose Downeast and Acadia

As a child, Julee spent all her summers in Bar Harbor and Trenton and when they saw NortherNest for sale in 2000 they jumped at the chance to purchase their own waterfront property. Coincidentally, NortherNest shares the same beach that Julee spent summers on during her youth. A very serendipitous event. After many years of vacationing at NortherNest, Pete & Julee moved to Trenton year-round in 2004 and are lucky to be able to enjoy the beauty of Acadia National Park and the surrounding area year-round.

What makes this cottage unique

As a real estate agent, Julee gets to see a lot of waterfront homes and beaches. Without a doubt, NortherNest has one of the best, most friendly beaches in the area. It is truly a rare find! The location is quiet, the yard is private and the beach is lightly used by only a few other property owners. It is a great place to relax and unwind. Beach fires are fun at night and if the full moon is rising over the bay it is a special treat. On calm nights you can see bioluminesence (glow-in-the-dark plankton) when you disturb the water. This is amazing. The night sky is a true wonder at the Nest. Kayaking from the beach is so easy and fun. There are several islands you can kayak to and there is a seal rookery across the bay. Wildlife enthusiasts and birders will be delighted by the diversity on the property. Gardeners will delight in the perennial gardens and the organic vegetables, raspberries & rhubarb are yours for the picking. Truly a special home!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Taken from Guest Log Book:

Thank you for sharing your lovely Nest with us. Our stay was wonderful right from the start! The fresh cut flowers were such a homey touch. The backyard is so peaceful and relaxing and the hummingbirds were an extra special treat! The beach was beautiful in the sun, clouds & even the rain. We have collected beautiful sea glass and a few heart shaped pebbles to bring home with us. They will always remind us of our stay here. The night sky was tremendous and we made special wishes on all the shooting stars. Thanks so much!

So welcoming in every way

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at NortherNest; my husband, our portuguese water dog and our two beagles! I'm not sure who enjoyed the 'nest' more; my husband and I, or the dogs! The moment we entered the 'nest', there were welcoming touches everywhere; from the water bowl adorned with dog biscuits, to the crisply made beds with lovely linens and bedcovers, to the freshly cut and arranged garden flowers throughout the house. Our stay was relaxing and peaceful beyond words. As some have already said, the pictures just don't fully account for the beautiful setting, the amazing beach, enclosed deck with access to the pup area, and proximity to Mt Desert Island and Acadia Nat'l Park. We explored all of the island and the park everyday. What a pleasure to have our beagles off leash enjoying time on the deck with us! We will definitely return!

Can't go wrong!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from an awesome Maine vac and staying at the NortherNest was perfect in every way. As everyone else has commented, the owners have thought of everything possible to give their renters the over and beyond treatment.

Perks:

*Clean and inviting home that has everything well thought out.. A breakfast nook, deck seating, fenced in grassy area and gated deck for the dogs. Lovely decor. Every tool and kitchen and bathroom supplies.

* Acadia Park pass plus surrounding area info

* Beautiful view of bay from the home. Plus plentiful gardens with fresh veggies and herbs! We made fresh salads...lettuce, beets, carrots, cukes, tomatoes, squash...to name a few! Wonderful!

* Private beach- our dogs loved to roam and have fun every day. Found some sea glass and a star fish. Saw a sea. Gorgeous views, peaceful and serene. Kayaks were available to use also.

* Location was great. 10-15 min to Bar Harbor. Acadia Park, Ellsworth, SW Harbor and other small towns within close proximity.

* Restaurants and shopping galore...too many to choose from. Paddy's, Side Street Cafe in Bar Harbor were great. Also 2 Cats Inn & Cafe for breakfast.

* Must do- Be the first to witness the sun rise in the USA on Cadillac Mnt. It was really windy and cold but worth it...dress accordingly in Oct, worth seeing! Acadia National Park...Sand Beach, small but beautiful, saw an eagle there. The trail there is awesome, you will pass Thunder Hole also.

I'm sure I am forgetting many other suggestions but I just wanted to let any future renters know, this place is a gem of a place. Thanks Julee and Pete for making our vac a perfect one!

Owner's Response: You are so welcome. Thanks for your kind words!! We are so glad you had a wonderful stay. The Nest is a pretty special place to unwind but when you get tired of relaxing on the beach there is so much to explore in the area - as you found out! Sounds like you really made the most of your visit!! We work hard at keeping the property clean and making it a wonderful place to stay. Vacations are too few and very special so it is important to us that all our guests have a great time. Thank you for taking such nice care of the property, we really appreciate how nicely you left it when you departed! Hope to see you again in 2016! Julee & Pete

Home away from home, with countless thoughtful touches

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a week in celebration of our 5-year anniversary. We've determined that when we return we will stay at the Nest again, and bring our son along for the trip! The decor was darling, the house spotless, the view was beautiful, the bed was among the most comfortable I've ever slept in, and the thought and care that the owners put into making sure our stay was a fantastic one were evident. We arrived to fresh flowers, a pass to the park, a binder full of information about the home and the surrounding area, and even greeting cards with pictures that had pictures of the beach and stamped envelopes that we used to send notes to our son back home. I was concerned that the (short) distance from the island would feel like too much, but it actually turned out to be a welcome escape from the crowds at the end of the day! We made frequent stops at the seafood stand across the road (as recommended by the welcome book) and made most of our meals in the lovely and fully equipped kitchen. While the property management company was not always the most helpful or timely in responding to my questions, as soon as I sent a note to the owners I received immediate and detailed responses. I would recommend the Nest without hesitation. We hope to stay again someday!

Amazing Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The NortherNest was absolutely amazing! From the moment we arrived, as we looked out at the beautiful ocean, we were completely taken with the property. The house is a sweet, tucked away treasure! The cove in which the house sits is magnificent and a piece of heaven. We boiled crab and clams on the beach, kayaked for hours on end, played horseshoes, looked for sea shells, talked and reconnected as a family. After a long day of hiking in close by Acadia, we would sit on the beach with a glass of wine and truly relax in the quiet serenity. Thank you for all the games in the closet, they provided hours of fun for our family. The house is well stocked and I could always find the items I needed for cooking. We even had the privilege of cutting some greens from the garden for wonderful salads. We hated to leave and even went to the beach for one last look before we drove away. Thank you for sharing your beautiful house with us!

A Little Piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

The NortherNest was the perfect place for our vacation. The house is close enough to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, yet far enough away to get a more private atmosphere. After a long day hiking, we were able to sit back on the deck and watch the tide come in. When it got chilly after the sun started going down, we were able to move right into the sunroom so we could continue to take in that amazing view. Even while cooking in the kitchen, you can still get a glimpse of the mountains in the distance. The views are simply breathtaking.

The views weren’t the only thing that we took advantage of while at the Nest! It was so nice to walk down to the beach and sit in the chairs and be able to stick your feet in the bay. My brave fiancé even went for a quick swim! (If you know anything about the water in Maine, it is cold!) We also used the kayaks that were on the property. This was a huge plus for us since we didn’t have to bring our own!

Our two dogs absolutely loved the deck, access to the beach, and the yummy treats that were left for them!

We truly could not have asked for a better place and we will be booking here again next summer!

We did not want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

I can honestly say that this was the best vacation we have ever had. We did not want to leave (and that is a first!). We were lucky enough to have excellent weather while we visited (much better than at home in Massachusetts!). I spend a lot of time on my patio at home enjoying my garden and flowers. Northernest made me feel right at home (but even more beautiful!). It was so relaxing to come back to the house after a bike ride or hike and enjoy a cocktail on the deck. Kayaked in the bay, had s'mores out by the water, and saw so many fireflys! The kids were most excited about that - I haven't seen any fireflies since I was a kid! :-) The house is well equipped with anything that you would need and I loved that the cabinets in the kitchen were all labeled with the contents....made everything so much easier! I loved just sitting and watching the birds and chipmunks all over the yard. The kids really enjoyed using the porch as their doll's bedroom. :-) This is a truly dog friendly place with a fenced in dog yard and treats on the counter. We are already talking about booking again for next year!
