I live in San Francisco, California, and love to visit the Big Island when I can. This home was built by my brother, also the manager of the property for his family in 2007.
Adam Jacobstein purchased this house in 2007
Hale Apapane was built by Adam Jacobstein, the owner's brother, and was his family's home for 6 years before they moved off of Hawaii Island. It has been very carefully designed to take advantage of the surrounding landscape, with large windows, and enough room for a big group to feel together in the open living space, but still have separate areas upstairs. The furniture is all high quality and it was decorated with a purpose in mind.
The house is large and open inside. It has special artwork from local artists and photographers. It hace hot tub, a swing in the yard, and a large covered carport for playing basketball or hanging out.
Thought the house was gorgeous and I was really thrilled with Adam's willingness to work with us on our specific needs. We were too exhausted following a day of hiking to enjoy the hot tub, but everything was as described. My only suggestions for improvement would be to upgrade the bath towels to something larger and more absorbent, but certainly not a big deal. Thanks for a wonderful stay!
This is a spacious, well designed home, with many comforts and amenities. It is poised in a beautiful, serene setting, amidst giant ferns and tall Ohia trees, and it is very close to all that Volcano Village and Volcano National Park offers.
The manager was very clear and prompt in communication. We found the handmade furniture beautiful, comfortable, and unique. It is an efficient home as well, really a model for sustainable living- with rainwater catchment, solar hot water, photovoltaic energy, and good old rustic wood fire heating. When we stayed there, it looked like it was time for a very thorough spring cleaning inside and out. As the environment is ultra-humid it is understandable that mold and mildew would develop on surfaces periodically, and require more than the usual cleaning attention. The hot tub is a nice feature, although it seems to be a bit less than well- maintained and pristine, so we did not end up using it. Our family was very happy here, we highly recommend it, and would not hesitate to stay again! Our guess is: one of the top 3 vacation rentals in a 50 mile radius. New Thai food place nearby- Tuk Tuk Thai- excellent. Also must try: Ono Cafe - beautiful grounds, delicious food, excellent service.
We stayed 3 nights in October 2016. We had the entire home to ourselves. The quiet, cooler and very private setting was a welcome relief from the ocean side surf pounding stays we had the prior 6 nights on Oahu. We loved the beautiful use of various types and colors of wood - on the floor, the furniture and the staircase.
We felt well taken care of, not only through Adam's quick responses and professional approach, but also because the owner had provided a welcome book and printed instructions from everything on how to light the wood stove to how to use the hot tub.
There was one bathroom downstairs along with the kitchen, dining and living area. The bedrooms and other bathrooms were upstairs. Beds were comfortable. Portable heaters were provided in case you got cold at night. Soaps and shampoos were provided, along with a nice basket of native fruits on the kitchen island.
Everything worked. The location made it easy and quick to navigate to the park - easy access to the highway.
The listing description and pictures are up to date and reflect the current beauty of this well cared for home.
We stayed in 4 different homes during our island journey and this was our favorite.
We stayed here for 6 nights and loved the space and comfort of an entire house. It's a really beautiful house. It had everything we needed although we could have done with more teaspoons, bowls & mugs, plus we couldn't find a DVD player?! There wasn't a jacuzzi tub in the master ensuite either, as stated in the house details, although this isn't actually required as it has a superb hot tub instead! The water temperature of this was HOT, so we had to turn it down a little. But it was great to be able to sit in this whilst the kids played basketball! That was a real hit. Avoid dusk though as the mosquitos bite! The fire was superb and we used it every evening to take the chill out of the air. Lots of firewood was supplied. It really made the house welcoming and cosy after a busy day out exploring the sights of the east coast and Volcano NP. The wifi was excellent and the washer and dryer were great too.
All in all if you are looking to stay a few nights in the rainforest and where you can easily access the Volcano NP, then this house is for you. It really is beautiful.
We stayed 2 nights in this lovely home while we visited the park. The woodwork is gorgeous and was done by the owner. The home is very spacious and comfortable and is in a very wooded and secluded area. The decor is exactly as pictured, and reservations and communications with Adam were easy and timely. We really enjoyed being so close to the park and having this quiet retreat to come home to. My kids loved the swings in the backyard and it was nice to be able to send them outside without worrying about them getting in to trouble. Plenty of space for them to play in the yard and you have a good view of them from all the windows and the back deck. Was great to have a BBQ to use and the kitchen was well equipped. Beds were very comfortable. Linens were clean and plentiful. There was coffee and fruit for us on arrival which was a very nice touch. My only issue with the house was that it had a strange smell which a little vinegar-like. Not sure where the smell was coming from, but it was not a huge issue and opening the windows handled it. House was clean, but the baseboards and walls have some scuff marks on them that could use a little attention. The only reason I mention it is that the house is otherwise so beautiful and well kept, that a little attention to that detail would make the house absolutely perfect. Thanks for a great stay!
We are located one mile from Volcanoes National Park and . 5 miles from charming Volcano Village. Restaurants, art galleries, and a farmer's market are all nearby.
