About Richard Ashley

Worldwide traveler and entrepreneur from Hawaii. Lived in Japan since 1995 so we have lots of insider information and contacts and are happy to put in extra effort assist our most esteemed guests in having a most memorable experience in this great country.

Richard Ashley purchased this house in 2000

Why Richard Ashley chose Japan

We used to live in this house and love the experience of living in a local neighborhood in a house rather than a high rise apartment. The house was originally built in 1965 but we completely remodelled it inside and out. new roof, plumbing, wiring, walls, appliances etc.

Have a unique experience by living in a peaceful, safe Japanese neighbourhood yet be only a few minutes from the main JR Yamanote train line and the Tokyo metro. Easy and quick, direct airport access in under 1 hour.

The most reasonable rates at the most convenient location.

This area is where history has been preserved and the modern thrives so you get the best Tokyo has to offer.

What makes this house unique

I love Japan and have lived here going on 18 years. I also like privacy comfort and convenience. This location offers it all.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Peter and Margaret from Australia

We had a great week at Tokhouse. It was wonderful living in the local community and being so close to their everyday life. I think staying in a big hotel would be quite restrictive of ones experience of life in Tokyo. Great amenities in the flat, great food nearby both fresh, take away and local eating places.

Wonderful apartment near nishi-nippori station

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful airy well lit apartment. Well appointed. Close to metro and JR which makes sightseeing easy. They met us at the nishi-nippori station walked us to the apartment and oriented us to the apartment and Tokyo which was very helpful. We stayed at 4 vacation rentals during out Japan stay and this was our favorite apartment.

Excellent location. Quiet and secure.

  • 4 of 5

We have really enjoyed our stay at Tokhouse. The unit functioned very well, even for our family of five (but we are all under 65 kgs). We appreciated the quiet neighbourhood and proximity to Yanaka and Ueno

Fantastic vacation house!

  • 5 of 5

As a first time visitor to Tokyo I highly recommend the Tokhouse for other first timers as it gives you the experience of feeling part of the city rather than just a tourist.

The closest station, Nishi-Nippori, is extremely convenient to access coming from Narita airport and the location itself is perfect with its sleepy suburban feel, yet just 5 minutes from the Tokhouse there's a bustling market for all your grocery and dining needs. The accommodation is a perfect space with everything you need and I always looked forward to getting back in the evenings. Great shower pressure and instant hot water are always appreciated after a long day of exploring in sweaty June.

Richard is a terrific guy and an experienced traveler so you are in safe hands. From the moment you make your reservation online, right until you are back home having your security deposit returned, Richard is the most attentive host offering traveling information even before you even arrive in the country. From providing local knowledge to planning convenient check in/out arrangements and even offering to take care of my luggage, you can tell he puts a lot time and effort into running the Tokhouse and the result is impeccable service that feels very personalised. He even managed to accommodate my change in holiday plans and his generosity will not be forgotten.

I will return to Tokyo one day and I won't even waste my time looking for other accommodation. I will be right back at the Tokhouse for another terrific experience.

Nice and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

The house is as described. The owner is very responsive. He met us at the station to bring us to the house as well as gave us detailed instructions on how to use the appliances, etc. The house has a unique architecture with custom design. We really liked the kitchen with a dining table as well as the 3rd story loft for my 2 teens. The house is 5 minute from JR, with local restaurants nearby. We enjoyed getting the experience of staying at a house while we tour Tokyo. We had a good time and enjoyed our stay very much.

Tokhouse Stay

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Tokhouse, directly after our flight from France.

Richard, the Owner of Tokhouse, met us at the Nisshi Nippori station, and gave us plenty of valuable information for our 2 stays there.

The accomodation is really nice, the cleanliness is really good, and the location is good too.

Do not hesitates any second to book there

Comfortable, and very well located house in Tokyo

  • 5 of 5

It has been a very pleasant stay in this house, in the center of Tokyo, for my family which stayed 12 days. They really enjoyed the silent area, and the very convenient place, close to supermarkets, japanese restaurants, subways and the so beautiful and traditional area of Yanaka.

My family was in 6 persons, the maximum capacity of the house. It was really ok: the 3 floors let people have space enough without bothering each other, the kitchen and bathroom were well equipped and the futons were really comfortable (quite thicker than usual ones). The folding screens, in the bedroom, were really welcome to divide the room: it was really nice as 3 generations had to cohabit during 12 days.

The owners were very kind and helpful to explain all things concerning the house, as well as to give touristic or practical information.

The price also was really acceptable for the quality of the house and its location.

I recommend that house for rent.
