Doville Villa Rental Photos and Description

Max Beds: 8, Min Beds: 8, Double Beds: 4, Single Beds: 0, Baths: 3, Reference: 12511

If you like history, you will enjoy staying in this ancient Normandy country house. Sleep beneath an authentic thatched roof; gaze out at the meandering river through an arrow slit once used for defense against attackers. After you've settled in to this small Normandy manor, venture out to explore a local village or pay your respects to our fallen heroes by visiting the beaches of Omaha Beach and San Malo. The property borders a national park that has several wonderful walks that you can take through the local countryside.

(2.5 hectares) Built in the 16th century, this small manor house is located in the hollow of a valley-- a historic fortified house built during the Huguenot rebellion to fend off Blanchlande Abbey. They lost the fight and in 1597 the last nobleman of the manor was executed. The manor became the property of the Abbey until the Revolution of 1789. The property has now been in the same family for four generations. Recently, the gardens and house were restored to their original beauty: stone walls, a genuine thatched roof, and even a corner tower with windows for shooting arrows and dropping boiling oil! There are a total of 2.5 hectares of grounds with a small river. Directly outside the house there is a courtyard terrace with garden furniture, a barbeque, and lovely views of the river and a copse of trees. The busy D-900 road is close by, so there is traffic noise when outside of the house.

The interior of the manor has been furnished and decorated in 16th and 17th century style, but with attention to 21st century comfort! Many features have been restored to their original appearance, including the internal shutters and wrought-iron artwork on the windows.

Ground Floor: A living room welcomes you with a Louis XIV fireplace in Valgnes stone, dating from the 18th century. The furniture is in Louis XIII style, and there is a satellite TV and DVD player in a Henri II dresser. The dining room has a 16th century granite fireplace. There is also a U-shaped kitchen, well equipped with a cook-top, oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, and mixer. Also on the ground floor there is a large twin-bedroom with an additional child's bed (0-6 years) and an ensuite bathroom with a sink, toilet, and bathtub with a handheld shower-head.

First Floor: On the first floor there are two bedrooms, each with a pair of twin-beds side-by-side. They share a bathroom with a sink, toilet, and bathtub. There is also a larger third bedroom with two twins, an additional folding bed, and an ensuite bathroom with a sink, toilet, and bathtub. Inside this bedroom there is an original 16th century stone lavabo liturgique, a basin characteristic of Protestant homes on the nearby Jersey Island. A laundry room with washer, dryer, and ironing facilities is located in an outbuilding.

Overall:

We had a wonderful time at the manoir and would recommend it highly.

Enjoyed Most:

The property is exactly as described and the owners are very lovely people.

Surrounding Area:

Very close to all of the WW II sights and we were able to make a one day drive to Mont St Michele

Nearby Events or Locales:

Haye du Puis is not quite within walking distance.

Tips or Restaurants:

The property was well-equipped but you need personal items, such as soap, shampoo etc.

Directions:

We were extremely tired and found it quite difficult to find the property. We should have trusted the GPS that we had purchased but the roads seemed VERY small and so we went off course and got totally lost

Overall:

Lovely property, clean and tidy and super comfortable beds. Kitchen was well equipped although a couple more knives would have been useful.

Enjoyed Most:

We loved the peace and quiet, yet we were only 10 minutes from the main town. Delightful owners who were very helpful and informative. Bedrooms are very lovely and we all slept very well. Washer and dryer were invaluable. The kids loved playing in the courtyard.

Enjoyed Least:

No stand up shower, no "comfy" lounge area. Whilst there was a separate lounge with TV and plenty of seating, it was rather formal meaning it wasn't great for chilling out.

Surrounding Area:

So much to do and not enough time to cover it all. Portbail has the most beautiful beach - perfect for kids and only about 15k away. The D Day beaches are, as expected, very interesting and moving. Bayeux is a must. Mont St Michel was a long ride and it took ages to get into the car park. Worth the wait but if you have small kids or elderly/infirm people with you, it's probably best avoided in high season. We found the crowds quite claustrophobic.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Doville was walkable but there is nothing there. La Haye-du-Puits is about 10 mins by car and has a great supermarket, butchers, bakery etc. There are also various other supermarkets on almost every route to the main town.

Tips or Restaurants:

The kitchen is well equipped with most items. There are oils and spices/condiment,s etc. There is also a small supply of dishwasher tabs and washing up liquid cleaning items. Do bring hand soap, shower gel, etc, as these are not provided. There are plenty of nice towels. I would also recommend slippers or comfy shoes for inside as the stone floors are cold and not very forgiving! Bring DVDs if you have kids as there are no English-speaking kids shows on TV - only 3 English news channels: BBC WorldBloomberg and 1 other that I can't recall. There was a small supply of coals for the BBQ.

Overall:

Overall we enjoyed our stay very much. We were greeted by the owner, who stocked the kitchen with camembert cheese, eggs, bacon, juice, a baguette, and some milk. It was perfect as we arrived quite tired!

I would describe the house as rustic, not as a Manor House, which suggests something larger with more grounds. But if travelers appreciate history, this is a nice redo of an old structure. The layout with two master bathrooms accommodated our 2 families very well.

Enjoyed Most:

We liked the large eating area. Liked the rustic feel of the place. Nice renovation. The property is adjacent to part of a national park that has several walks mapped out through the local countryside. Unfortunately, this is not well advertised at the property and we found out about it on a billboard near the church. We didn't get to walk the entirety. I'd suggest that the owner put some info about that in the house.

Enjoyed Least:

The property is a stone's throw from D-900 which is a busy 2 lane road, more like a thoroughfare. Outside the house it was very noisy from the traffic, and not the country quiet we were expecting. There really isn't much of a view other than the other buildings on the property--it sits more in a little valley. The kitchen is functional, but small, in keeping with the rustic feel of the house. There is a grill, and that is what we used for most of our cooking.

Surrounding Area:

We liked walking around the tiny residential village of Doville. We liked the location because it was central to the areas we wanted to visit, such as Omaha Beach, San Malo, San Michel, and Bayeuex.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Aside from Doville, which does not have any stores, the next town is Le Hays du Puit. While the town is close, you would have to walk along D-900, which we thought was too dangerous--trucks, high speed driving, and no shoulder to the road.

We did go into Le Haye du Puit daily for food, bread, pastries and the butcher shop. Most anything you need you will likely find in the town center, including gas. Not fancy, but definitely authentic--people in Le Haye do not speak any English.

Tips or Restaurants:

We did not find any standout restaurants, but as the area is not known for that, we planned to cook at the house. The kitchen is adequate, though very small. It is equipped with most things that you need to cook. I brought 2 kitchen knives and a small cutting board; the board was unneces

Overall:

We had a very enjoyable week.

Enjoyed Most:

Modern bathrooms, nice quiet location, laundry room.

Enjoyed Least:

Nothing.

Surrounding Area:

Many sites related to WWII; nice day trip to Jersey.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Doville is within walking distance, but there are no stores there.

Tips or Restaurants:

The owner gave us some good recommendations.

Overall:

The property is a wonderful combination of the old and new. The house has great character, heavy wood beams in the ceiling, and a marvelous view of the old pigeonnier.

Enjoyed Most:

It has four nice sized bedrooms with 3 very nice bathrooms. It looked very much like the pictures on the website. The owners were very nice and helpful.

Surrounding Area:

The surrounding area was quaint and pleasant.

Nearby Events or Locales:

The nearest small town is Doville and it was within walking distance. But it has houses only. The nearest town with shops, restaurants, etc. is La Haye du Puits and it is not within walking distance, but is a quick drive away.

Directions:

Finding the place requires paying careful attention to the written directions. But if you pay attention to the directions, you will find it without too much problem.

Check In Out:

The owner checked us in and was very friendly and explained everything well. They have thought through just about everything that someone would ask and took the time to explain where everything is, etc.

Overall:

We loved it and loved Normandy. There is an awful lot to see in the area so a week is a good amount of time to see most everything. We loved being in the country.

Enjoyed Most:

It was quiet off by itself. It was perfect for our family.

Enjoyed Least:

There is a slight sewage smell in the house - I think from the sceptic tank. Editor's Note: The smell was due to this being the first rental of the season. When in use, the smell disappears.

Surrounding Area:

We saw a great bit of Normandy which was fascinating. We would like to go back!!!!

I would suggest getting a guide for the beaches. There are web sites for this. We arrived on Saturday and our guide was Monday, which set the tone for the rest of the week.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Doville, the nearest town, is a two minute walk, but there is nothing there. The nearest big town is La Haye du Puits about 10 minutes away, and you can get anything you want there. The market day is Wednesday which was a lot of fun.

Tips or Restaurants:

The owner had basic provisions, fresh eggs, milk, coffee, bacon, noodles, basic spices, etc, which was wonderful. There was dish laundry detergent.

Map

This manor house is located in the heart of the Marais du Contentin and the Bessin Regional Nature parks (with wonderful paths for walks). A great wealth of endemic plants and animals make walks through this area a delight. The nearest village is Doville, which is within walking distance, but there are no shops here. The closest town with facilities is La Haye du Puits, where you will find a good many shops, including 3 supermarkets and a Wednesday morning market. There are also numerous restaurants around the area. Nearby sights include some 11th century ruins and Celtic stones at Lithaire, and a beautiful 14th century castle at St Sauveur-le-Viconte, in addition to many interesting abbeys. Along the coast you can find a variety of port towns and sandy beaches. From Portbail Harbour you can visit the Jersey, Guernesey, and Sark Islands, otherwise known as the Isles Anglo-Normandes for their unique government style (instituted in 1066 by William the Conqueror). There are a few golf courses in the area, and the landing beaches of Utah are about 30 km away, where General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. brought his men ashore. You can also visit war museums at Caen and Ste-Mere-Eglise. Cherbourg (ferry port, airport): 40 km Coutance: 35 km Ste Mere Eglise: 27 km Valognes (train station): 17 km Beach: 12 km Lithaire: 10 km La Haye du Puits: 6 km Shops: 5 km Doville: walking distance
