Looking to explore the Chianti region of Tuscany with all the comforts of home and more? This accommodation in a Tuscany villa has it all, from a huge swimming pool to sprawling grounds and all the amenities indoors. One of the owners, who lives on the estate in the family villa, is American and she's furnished this holiday villa in Tuscany to American tastes. So relax! Lounge at this Tuscany vacation villa, take a refreshing bike ride to nearby Certaldo (we highly recommend exploring the Pretorio Palace), or take a day trip to Florence and beyond! There is another villa, Villa Sella, right next door (with its own pool), as well as two recently completed restored apartments, which share the pool with Villa Certaldo and the owners.

(300,000 m2/3,229,173 ft2)

Enter the estate of this historic 14th century villa via a private gate and find yourself in a garden filled with cypress, pine, and oak trees. The historical significance of the estate is underlined by the fact that it was occupied during the month of July 1944 by German forces and used as a command post, and subsequently liberated by allied forces as the front passed through the region. Several underground WWII hideouts are still visible in the nature reserve woods of the estate. On the estate is a large shared swimming pool, open from early May to early October, (16m x 6m, 0.8-2m deep) surrounded by terra cotta decking, while over 35 lemon trees release refreshing scents into the air. From the garden, you'll look towards the medieval town of San Gimignano. Although the estate is shared, you have a private 100 m2 yard with garden furniture and a barbeque. You will also have a 60 m2 courtyard with lemon trees and a covered terrace overlooking vineyards and the valley. One third of the remaining land is a nature reserve—a wooded area inhabited by wild pheasants, rabbits, boar, and hedgehogs. Another part of the estate is used for olive tree cultivation, and there is also a resident horse that enjoys free grazing around an ancient Roman fresh water spring. Private parking is available within the property grounds.

(174 m2/1,873 ft2)

This Tuscany accommodation comprises the totally private east wing of a 14th century villa. It was renovated in 2005 and has a private entrance, parking, covered terrace with table and chairs (the terrace shares a wall with the Villa Sella terrace) and garden. All appliances and beds are new and meet American standards for comfort and service. Wireless connection is available at no extra cost to those traveling with their laptops. There is also an in-home computer with a printer and scanner for use 24/7 at no additional cost as well. There is also a mobile phone with a prepaid card for guest use. Floors are all terra cotta. The bathrooms are furnished in Carrara marble and equipped with dual voltage plugs for easy use of foreign electric appliances.

Ground Floor: Enter via a private courtyard to find yourself in a living room furnished with two sofas (one is a sofa bed suitable for one, with a 120 cm mattress), an easy chair, a writing desk, fireplace, satellite TV, and DVD player. There is also a writing desk with a computer, printer, and scanner. Wireless internet connection works throughout the home and garden. Lithographs on the walls depict 19th century Rome and the countryside, while double doors allow access to the covered terrace with steps leading down to the private yard. A dining room has a table seating ten, with large arched windows overlooking the countryside. 19th century oil paintings depict members of the Medici family. The adjacent kitchen has an electric stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, American coffee machine, espresso cappuccino maker, and a small breakfast table. There is also a guest WC with toilet and sink. The ground floor bedroom is wheelchair friendly, and includes a 160 cm queen-size bed, a writing desk, easy chair, and wardrobe. There is an ensuite bathroom with sink, shower, and toilet (not wheelchair accessible). Double doors from the bedroom open onto the courtyard.

First Floor: Sixteen sandstone steps lead upstairs, where you'll find two more bedrooms. The room directly in front of you contains a 160 cm queen-size bed, wardrobe, writing desk, and a hidden wall safe. An ensuite bathroom contains a large corner bathtub with handheld showerhead, two sinks, a bidet, and toilet. The other bedroom on the first floor contains a 160 cm queen-size bed, double doors opening onto a small private balcony, a large walk-in closet, and a writing desk. The ensuite bathroom has double sinks, a toilet, bidet, and bathtub with showerhead. Between the two rooms there is a laundry room with washing machine, dryer, and sink.

Very relaxing with great views....

  • 4 of 5

Overall:

Very relaxing with great views.

Enjoyed Most:

Overall accommodating and very central in that other towns are easy to get to.

Enjoyed Least:

If you are planning to go during hot months be prepared for the heat inside the house. Although, the nights are bearable, and the ceiling fans

help.

Surrounding Area:

Very much enjoyed the surrounding areas the views were beautiful.

Went to have pizza down the road a few times, the people were friendly

and the pizzas were delicious.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Certaldo, not within walking distance. On Sunday we did walk to a tiny,

quaint church for service. We met some very nice people there.

Tips or Restaurants:

I followed your suggestions of things to take it covered pretty much everything. There's also the Pam (grocery store) close drive to if you forget something. There wasn't a bad restaurant! They were all good!

Directions:

Direction were good, we rented a GPS from car rental. Sometimes it didn't work so we used a Google Maps that helped a lot.

Check In Out:

Check in and the out process was easy. Elizabeth was there, it helps that she lives on property. She was very gracious and accommodating helped with directions, answered all our questions.

It was blissfully easy.

Overall our experience was positive....

  • 4 of 5

Overall:

Overall our experience was positive.

Enjoyed Most:

We loved the tranquility. We had a marvelous view of the countryside from the porch, as well as from most of the windows. Villa Certaldo was spacious and perfect for the six of us.

Enjoyed Least:

The bathroom lighting was very dim.

Surrounding Area:

The villa is situated in the midst of olive groves and grape vines. It was very private and beautiful.

Nearby Events or Locales:

I don't think we were within walking distance of any small towns. A car is really necessary.

Tips or Restaurants:

The Coop store in Certaldo was a great place to purchase groceries, wine, etc. It was a great one-stop shopping center. The best dinner we had was in Greve at Ristorante Giovanni da Verrazano--fabulous food!!

Directions:

It really helps to have a GPS, especially in picking one's way to all the charming hill towns in Tuscany.

Overall:

Overall very good experience. This was our second stay at the villa.

Enjoyed Most:

Size of bedrooms and bathrooms and nice dining/living room area, plus terrace and working fireplace. Elizabeth was excellent about supplying wood for us as we used it every night. The new Coop in lower Certaldo is fabulous.

Enjoyed Least:

The stove is difficult to deal with - not gas and controls rather tricky.

Most of us in the group enjoy cooking and prefer gas.

Surrounding Area:

Old Certaldo is lovely and museums interesting as well as the ceramics store. Nice to have a train in the town in which to get to Florence and Siena and other cities.

Directions:

We did use GPS and my husband remembered how to find the villas from last time; this was our second stay.

Check In Out:

Check in and check out were fine. No issues at all.
