John purchased this house in 1999
The house and gardens sit on a south slope. Sunny and warm all year round with spectacular soil for our garden. And the view - calming.
We stayed with Jim and John for the third time in as many years. Their place is absolutely lovely, quiet, and restful. The living room overlooks the vegetable gardens with views of the mountain. A more-than-well-equipped kitchen reflects Jim and John's years operating restaurants in New York and Northampton. Lovely beds and linens in both bedrooms and the bathroom. The garden holds exotic peonies, which during the season they share with those staying there, and sweet, tender lettuce and veggies which they also share. Behind the home are chickens who produce delicious eggs. Jim and John are congenial hosts, perfectly hospitable, never intrusive. We loved spending time talking with them. Their dogs are also a treat. Leaf would visit us as soon as we opened the front door, and then go on about her way. The location is less than ten minutes from downtown Northampton, but you feel completely in the country. We will be back as soon as our schedules permit, and it remains our favorite place to stay whenever we get to central MA!
The three of us had such a wonderful time at John and Jim's place. The mountain view suite was just what we needed and so much more. The place was so quiet with such beautiful view. The suite was clean and well-maintained. The amenities were generous. The kitchen was a perfect size. There were fresh eggs in the fridge for us, which we cooked for breakfast. We spent time walking around the vegetable garden and watching the chicken. We also enjoyed spending time with John and Jim. They gave us a basket of fresh peas from the garden to take home. Definitely recommend this place!!!
My partner and I spent a romantic winter weekend at this wonderful house. The enormous picture window and tasteful decor offered a deeply peaceful, cozy, and private space to relax, let go, and just be. We felt welcomed and at home. The towels were indeed amazing, the kitchen well-appointed, and there were so many different cozy nooks to sit and read or watch the world go by. Beautiful. Would highly recommend to all!
From the pictures, I knew that we would enjoy the weekend in the Bamboo Suite, but John's attention to details and rare, thoughtful esthetics well exceeded my expectations! John is an exceptional host—both present and helpful, yet we felt alone in the little paradise surrounded by bamboo. He even lent me his computer to try to resolve a technical problem with my phone. And the raspberry jam is worth the trip there...
We arrived late in the middle of the night and John was right there to greet us and get us settled in. With a 4 year-old and 1 year-old in tow we didn't know what to expect. By early morning, we had woken up to a gorgeous scene from the large picture window in the main room of the mountains and the garden below. We were struck by the attention to detail all around us from the stone garden and succulents in front flanked by huge white fragrant hydrangeas to the decor with the warm brick-colored walls lined with all sorts of books (I was thrilled to find one of my old favorites "A Confederacy of Dunces") and the kitchen stocked with the good quality cookware and sharp knives to the African black soap in the bathroom. We were thrilled to find fresh coffee for the french press, organic yogurt, milk, butter, goat cheese, and eggs from their chickens so we were able to relax that morning and have a lovely breakfast.
We mostly enjoyed the garden in the back. We asked for a tour and saw all sorts of different vegetables, herbs, flowers, and trees. There were two friendly dogs, Leaf and Dali, who were around and added an element of comfort to the place. Jim was essentially the Pied Piper with my son and our friend's son who was staying in the Bamboo Suite as he worked the garden. He was very patient and accommodating without being overindulgent and the kids just loved him. We actually stayed another night because our son loved being there so much.
The location was perfect and we were able to see so many places during our week there. So much to do and we would return to this quiet cozy place each day- what a respite! We would most definitely recommend and would love to return.
We needed a place to stay while we were in Massachusetts visiting our children and grandchildren. This was conveniently located, gave us all the space we needed and allowed us to bring our 2 cats. We stayed in the Bamboo Suite which looks out onto a grove of bamboo, and has a very peaceful and relaxing feel. The bed is extremely comfortable, the bathroom with the open shower was great and the kitchen has everything you would need.
John and Jim are very gracious hosts and go out of their way to make their guests feel at home. The farm fresh eggs and the homemade raspberry preserves that we found in the refrigerator were a welcome touch.
We would definitely stay here again when in the area, and recommend it enthusiastically.
