About John

We owned and operated a popular natural foods restaurant for over 20 years on the Smith College campus (closed 1/21/12).Green Street Cafe has been featured in many national and international publications (Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Yankee Magazine and Editors' Choice, NYT, ...) We now 'farm' Greens Treat and provide organic locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers for 25 garden share members.

John purchased this house in 1999

Why John chose Northampton

The house and gardens sit on a south slope. Sunny and warm all year round with spectacular soil for our garden. And the view - calming.

Beautiful Berkshire Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our stay at John and Jim's home. The house is tastefully decorated and comfortable. The large window facing the mountain provided serene vistas for enjoying with our morning coffee. Initially we were concerned that our active boys would disturb the owners who live downstairs, but John kindly assured us that it was not a problem and encouraged the children to "romp and play" which allowed us to relax.

Jim and John have created beautiful landscapes around their home and gave me the red carpet tour! As a gardener, I really appreciated that. They even gave us a some plants to take home! Awesome people, Awesome house! Thank you John and Jim!

This is the second time that we have had the pleasure of staying at this property. The owners are so gracious and courteous. This stay we also rented the bamboo suite which is beautiful and the bathroom is amazing. It is very peaceful and relaxing and we will definitely be staying at this property again.

Great place to relax and recharge you're batteries.

It'll be my first choice if I'm over that way again in the future.

Simply Wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

My family was in town for a wedding and opted for Jim and John's wonderful house, renting both suites to accomodate all six of us. When we arrived, there were garden-fresh tomatoes awaiting us outside as well as fresh eggs and butter in the fridge. My mother is 85 years old and was delighted that I found a place with no stairs. I can't say enough about how hospitable and gracious our hosts were. Our only drawback is that they were having a 'heat wave' and the units had no AC. Highly recommended property.

As Wonderful as Ever

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with Jim and John for the third time in as many years. Their place is absolutely lovely, quiet, and restful. The living room overlooks the vegetable gardens with views of the mountain. A more-than-well-equipped kitchen reflects Jim and John's years operating restaurants in New York and Northampton. Lovely beds and linens in both bedrooms and the bathroom. The garden holds exotic peonies, which during the season they share with those staying there, and sweet, tender lettuce and veggies which they also share. Behind the home are chickens who produce delicious eggs. Jim and John are congenial hosts, perfectly hospitable, never intrusive. We loved spending time talking with them. Their dogs are also a treat. Leaf would visit us as soon as we opened the front door, and then go on about her way. The location is less than ten minutes from downtown Northampton, but you feel completely in the country. We will be back as soon as our schedules permit, and it remains our favorite place to stay whenever we get to central MA!

A perfect weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

The three of us had such a wonderful time at John and Jim's place. The mountain view suite was just what we needed and so much more. The place was so quiet with such beautiful view. The suite was clean and well-maintained. The amenities were generous. The kitchen was a perfect size. There were fresh eggs in the fridge for us, which we cooked for breakfast. We spent time walking around the vegetable garden and watching the chicken. We also enjoyed spending time with John and Jim. They gave us a basket of fresh peas from the garden to take home. Definitely recommend this place!!!
