About the property

Garden cottage with large porch, patio, garden. 1 BR, 1 Bath

Entering the garden gate, you'll walk under an arbor and pass the chicken coop, the organic garden and enter your own private retreat. We have made every effort to make this retreat as green as possible. Just inside the gate you have a lovely patio shaded by native Live Oaks, another garden area planted with Texas Natives, and a large covered porch with an outdoor dining spot, and a wide bench with huge Fat Boy beanbag cushions. Inside the Casita, which is small and efficient, you have a queen sized bed, an Italian love seat and ottoman, a kitchen with granite counter tops and equipped all the basics, an expandable dining table, a closet and a bath with walk in shower. There are handmade tiles installed in the kitchen and the bath. The dinnerware is from our studio. We We harvest rainwater and use it on the vegetable gardens, and use some for the landscaping. When available, we can supply you with some fresh eggs from the chickens and a vegetable or two from the garden. Just ask and we will harvest for you. The hot water heater is tankless on demand, the AC/heater is an energy efficient 18 Seer Mini-Split, and there is a ceiling fan to reduce the need for AC. The floors are hardwood and tile with an area rug in the living area. We use sustainable paper products, bath products and soaps. The furniture and cabinetry was locally sourced and/or reclaimed.

We have 3 fish ponds with Koi and goldfish for you to enjoy.

There is a lap pool on the property, filled with rainwater which you are welcome to use while enjoying the cool water, the flowers and watching the wind generators spin. This is a very relaxing place.

About Claudia reese

I'm a studio artist and have made my living making pottery, tiles and sculpture since 1981. I taught in universities for a number of years but found that I loved running my own studio. It gives me the freedom to work on my property and add tiles, sculpture, architectural elements, gardens and out buildings.

Why Claudia reese chose Tumbleweed Hills

I bought this property because I love Austin and especially this area. When I found it, the cooling breezes seemed to always be blowing. First I built the studio, then my house and pool, and to capture those breezes, I put in a couple of wind turbines. Just recently we finished the Casita which I'm calling CasitAlegre.

What makes this cottage unique

This 'compound' developed organically. We'd add one building and another just seemed to want to be built. We've been conscious of making it as environmentally green and sustainable as possible. The main house is built with compressed earth blocks, there are many solar panels, and two wind turbines which we've dubbed 'Thing 1 and Thing 2', a vast water collection system, and of course the gardens. So we've been at it for a while, and I still have new ideas of things to build and improve.

When you visit you'll find a wonderful pool for relaxing or swimming, and just outside the gates, good walking routes and great bike routes.

This secluded and darling garden cottage is located within a potter's compound. We have a ceramics studio on the property and make dinnerware, tiles and sculpture. Lake Austin is nearby and Lake Travis not too far away. Abundant dining, shopping, movies, and theater within 6 miles.

Minimum age for renters: 25. Children OK but there is only one bed. We now have 10 HD TV channels and WiFi PETS: Pets are permitted in rental with prior approval. $10. per pet/day up to a max of $60.per pet per week 1. All Pets must be on leashes outside of fenced area. 2. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up any/all pet refuse. 3. Pets are not allowed on furniture. Any evidence of pets on furniture may incur extra cleaning fees. 4. All pets must be treated with Advantage or similar topical flea/ tick repellent 3 days prior to arrival 5. Peaceful and Cozy

This was our second stay at the Casita and we loved it just as much as we did on our first stay. As before, the place is clean and cozy, nestled in a neighborhood of spectacular homes and views. Claudia is a great host who is there when needed, but not intrusive. I think we will be back a third time!

Surprise around every corner

We loved our stay. It's a beautiful, comfortable place with plenty of opportunities to explore and enjoy the variety of art sculptures hidden throughout. In addition, we liked how art was used in subtle ways to improve the design and feel of the buildings and the whole experience. It was also nice to be in the Austin hill country and yet so close to Dining in Austin. I look forward to my next stay at the Casita!

Such a cute place!

We stayed here about 60 day while our home was being built in Dripping Springs. The owner, Claudia, was great and so accommodating when we had to extend our stay. The place is small, but had everything we needed, including our own washer/dryer. When Hurricane Harvey hit, Claudia invited us to join her and her friends for an impromptu dinner party...so much fun. The chicken coop near the casita was a joy to visit each morning, and Claudia’s little dog is a sweetheart. Location is great and close to the Hill Country Galeria and HEB. Please note that there are 3 steps down to the bathroom and to the laundry area which might not be ideal for someone with major mobility issues.
