About the property

Immaculate Beach House, Close to Ocean, 3 Bedrooms + Den (Sleeps 6-8), 2 Baths

[A few full weeks plus some 5-6 nights are still available for summer 2018 so reserve before they're all gone!!]

SeaGarden Cottage is a two-story home just over a block from the beach, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay in a classic seaside town. It's the quintessential beach bungalow, built in the 1930's but more recently expanded and remodeled with 3 bedrooms (sleeping 8) and 2 baths. Beautifully appointed and well maintained, it combines traditional beach cottage charm with modern comforts and amenities (including high-speed wireless Internet). It's our treasured escape from the hectic world and we're pleased to share it with you.

Pull into the semi-circular driveway with room for 3 cars (+one parking pass provided for on-street parking). Enter through the bright front porch with picnic table and butterfly chairs into the main living space centered around a large sofa, 44' flat-panel TV w/Blu-Ray player and stereo system, stone fireplace and wood-beam walls, opening into a sun-filled dining area and gleaming galley kitchen with complete cookware, utensils and dishes. To the right is one bedroom with built-in dresser, two closets, a chest of drawers and full-size bed, adjoining a full bath with tiled walk-in shower, and a knotty pine paneled den with comfortable sofabed, a closet, 32' flat-panel TV w/VCR (and many tapes, mostly for kids).

Upstairs is the large master bath with tub, laundry room with stacking washer/dryer and closet space, master bedroom with an extremely comfortable queen-size bed and chest of drawers, and third bedroom with antique twin beds and a crib, a chest of drawers and a large closet.

Our vacation home by the sea is perfect for families (crib and highchair provided) or couples seeking a cozy retreat just a short stroll from the ocean and local restaurants. Walk out the front door and you can see the dunes and in a couple minutes you've got your toes in the ocean! After a day at the beach rinse off in the private outdoor shower (hot & cold water), cook out on the fenced rear deck and relax on the enclosed porch. On cool evenings curl up by the glowing gas fireplace. Or hop on your bike for the short ride up Bayard Ave. along Silver Lake to downtown Rehoboth, or take the stunningly beautiful 8-mile cruise south through Delaware Seashore State Park to Indian River Inlet with its immense undeveloped beach and bathhouse w/concessions (plus great striped bass and flounder fishing!).

True to the name SeaGarden Cottage, in season (~June-Sept.) there is full vegetable garden for you to pick and enjoy, along with various herbs and flowers as well.

As usual with beach houses, you'll need to supply your own bed linens and towels (except for crib sheets/blanket).

Our rental process is easy since can 'Book It' instantly and we'll respond within 24 hours. First half (50%) of rent is due 8 weeks before check-in or upon reserving if you choose, and the balance 4 weeks later. After receipt of the final rent payment we'll provide access details and additional info to help make your stay enjoyable and relaxing.

In season (June-Sept.) we typically rent by the week, but will sometimes consider a 4-6 day mid-week rental when we can use the weekend ourselves. Off-season (Oct.-May) has a 3-day minimum; please contact us via email for off-season rates and availability. SeaGarden Cottage is usually winterized and unavailable for rental from November through May.

We do not rent during late Spring / early Summer Graduation/Senior Weeks.

SEAGARDEN COTTAGE IS GREEN! We installed a 6 kW solar system from Sungevity to meet all your energy needs with power from the sun!

Self-pick vegetable garden & herbs in summer - that's why it's called SeaGarden Cottage! Beautiful fully-enclosed cedar outdoor shower with h/c water. SeaGarden Cottage has gone green with a 6 kW solar system from Sungevity to meet all your energy needs with power from the sun. Dewey has a GREAT live music scene all summer - dance under the stars at the Bottle & Cork or next to the bay at the Rusty Rudder - it's the best!

Another fantastic family vacation at the SeaGarden Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This was the second year that my wife and I, adult children, and grandchildren stayed in Dewey Beach at the SeaGarden Cottage. Dewey Beach is a wonderful place for a family vacation and the SeaGarden Cottage offers fantastic accommodations! The cottage is comfortable for our family of all ages with everything that is required for a relaxing stay at the beach. Being our second year, we knew that almost everything from beach toys and chairs to cribs and bicycles were available, so packing for our vacation was much easier than ever before. The house is just a block or two from both the beach and from the various restaurants in Dewey Beach. And, being just a mile from Rehoboth Beach, it is easily accessible by bicycle or even walking without the congestion and crowds there. All around, SeaGarden Cottage is a great place for a family vacation!

Perfect Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This was our fifth (I think) year in a row staying at the Sea Garden Cottage for our annual "Greyhounds Reach the Beach" vacation. It is perfect for us and has been very well maintained over the years. We love the amenities, the outdoor shower, the garden, and the close proximity to the beach. Thank you for another wonderful year!!

Comfortable, clean and great location.

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful house was clean, comfortable and accommodating. We were very happy with the two down stairs bedrooms that are great for elderly family members and/or are recovering from knee surgery. The beach is just a short walk and lovely restaurants and shops as well. The people are very friendly, even at the end of the season. Rehoboth is obtainable by trolly or a short drive. We have stayed previously in Rehoboth, twice, but I recommend staying in Dewey Beach! Less crowded beaches and quiet. The neighborhood that this house is located in was very refreshingly quiet at night. We had a house full of 20 somethings across from us, but at night....crickets! Kathy and Lee are very good at keeping you informed before, during and after your trip and are full of extra information like what do to and where to eat. Feels like you are staying at your families house.

The outdoor shower has warm water and is privately located on the back deck, which is wonderful. We loved our vacation. Thank you so much!

perfect summer get away

  • 5 of 5

This is the fourth summer that we have stayed at the Sea Garden cottage and we love it! Kathy and Lee are so easy to work with, the house is adorable and its prime location! 1.5 blocks from the beach, a block from Jolly Trolly stops and in the backyard of all of Dewey's night life, yet tucked far enough away that you can still relax! So lucky I found this gem!

About Lee Watkins

Lee is director of Bioinformatics & IT at the Johns Hopkins Center for Inherited Disease Research, Kathy is a social worker with Hospice of the Chesapeake. We love to garden and to travel far and wide but love even more coming home to our beach house in Dewey - and now our garden is here and you can share in the bounty! This really is our vacation home and our favorite place so we come to Dewey Beach every chance we get.

Lee Watkins purchased this house in 2010

Why Lee Watkins chose Rehoboth by the Sea

Our families have been coming to the Rehoboth area for generations, but we looked for a place at the beach for over 10 years before we found and fell in love with SeaGarden Cottage - the beach house of our dreams.

Dewey Beach is the prototypical beach town, two blocks wide with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Rehoboth Bay on the other. There are dozens of restaurants from coffee shops to pizza (Grotto, Mama Celeste's) to Mexican (Que Pasa - scrumptious fish tacos) to fresh local seafood and steaks and delicious American fare (Woody's Cafe). Anything you can't find is just a mile away in Rehoboth - including the incredible Blue Moon and Back Porch restaurants, sushi on the roof at The Cultured Pearl, and the original Dogfish Head brewpub! There are many watering holes like the world-famous Starboard and arguably the best live-music scene of any Atlantic Coast beach town. There are several beach supply shops, a marina where you can rent a boat (can also rent jet-skis at Ruddertowne) or put in your own boat, and just down Rt. 1 is the Old Inlet Bait & Tackle that has absolutely everything for fishing (including a rod/reel repair shop), crabbing and clamming.

Whether you love reading on the beach all day or shopping at the tax-free outlets or taking the kids to a water park or spending evenings on the Boardwalk (personally, I've never lost my love of Skee-Ball), or board-sailing the back bay or surfing or skim-boarding the ocean waves, or taking in an incredible live music show at the one & only Bottle & Cork or a delicious meal and a great beer at Dewey Beer & Food Company or a truly fine meal following drinks on the roof deck at Two Seas or fishing for that big striped bass from the jetty at Indian River Inlet (or drifting for flounder on the sandy flats of the bay or from the fishing pier in Lewes) or just shelling and enjoying the waves on the beach, it's ALL here within a stone's throw of SeaGarden Cottage!

What makes this house unique

SeaGarden Cottage is cozy and comfortable but there's plenty of room so it never feels cramped - a beach cottage that lives big! It has space enough for eight yet is small enough to feel like a private retreat for two. SeaGarden Cottage a true original that has been been lovingly maintained and gracefully updated.

At SeaGarden you can park your car and not have to get in it again until you leave (unless you want to, of course). You can walk out the front door in the early morning and stroll down the wide beautiful beach then stop in for breakfast and great coffee at Baked or at the old-school diner Sunrise (friendly cheap and plenty) or at the Fifer Orchards market down the street (where you can also pick up some gourmet groceries, fresh veggies, fruit or flowers). Walk down to the corner and jump on the open-air Jolly Trolley to do some shopping (and, perhaps, buying) or just check out the Boardwalk. Or walk the other way towards the bay and put your kayak in at the cute little Read St. park while your kids play on shore.

We love picking fresh tomatoes and peppers right outside the back door all summer. We love riding our bikes to Fifer Orchards market and into Rehoboth for dinner. We love walking hand-in-hand to take in a free music festival at the Rusty Rudder entertainment complex... and then walking home through the cool ocean breezes late that night. We love the laid-back Dewey Beach attitude - 'It's a way of life!'

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lee and Kathy,

Belated thanks for allowing us to rent your beach home in Dewey Beach Sept 7th to the 14th. Sorry for the delay in sending this msg, but the week got away from us since we left the beach last Sunday.

We thoroughly enjoyed vacationing on Swedes Street! Your generous hospitality was definitely appreciated. The entire home is comfortable, but the family was especially impressed with the outdoor shower! It sure helped get the sand off.

We had one of those magical days on Thursday...our four year old granddaughter’s first beach experience. Plus, she danced with us and her parents under the stars at the Rusty Rudder that night.

BTW, we got to know “Joe” in the newspaper shop near Woody’s who reserved a Post for us each day. It gave us a real hometown feeling.

Thanks again. With luck, we will contact you again next year if you have any weeks available for rent.
