Here are a few reviews from our renters:

'I am sitting in the living room of the Hopkins' condo as I type. My 5-year-old son is napping (hours on the beach and pool can wear even the most determined non-sleeper down) on 'the coolest bunk beds in the world;' my wife and daughter walked up to the infinity pool for more swim time. The condo is top-notch in every way. It is beautifully furnished and situated in a great location for views as well as access to the pool and fitness center.

The location of the condo development on the grounds of the Mauna Kea Resort is excellent. This is the first time we have stayed in Hawaii and not felt packed in with other vacationers. We are a short ride to the Hapuna Prince Beach Resort and its amazing beach and are within a 15 minute drive of a whole range of other resorts. But the best part is, when we’re at the condo, we don’t feel like we’re in resortville! In other words, this place offers the best of both worlds. We’ll be back!'

'Your condominium was beautiful. It was so nicely decorated and accommodating for a family of five. The ability to access the pool and beach at Hapuna Beach was a nice extra. We are definitely interested in staying there again some time.'

-- the Feldman family, Los Altos, CA

'Quite simply, the condo was spectacular - our family was there for the first week of 2010 and our only regret was that we would have liked to have spent more time there. In the past we have stayed at the Mauna Kea Hotel; however, now that we have 2 small children we find it challenging to stay in hotels. Staying at this condo was a great balance - we had a luxurious, spacious condo with every amenity that you could imagine plus had signing privileges at the Mauna Kea which was a 5 minute drive. We were treated and felt as if we were guests at the hotel but felt that we were at an advantage since we were able to sleep in a beautifully furnished, 2100 square foot home as opposed to a 500 sq. foot room. Did I mention the amazing views? Highly recommended and we will be back!'

-- the Youn family, Orinda, CA

'We want to thank you for allowing us to stay in your palatial abode. It was the most relaxing part of our trip and your outdoor patio/kitchen was just wonderful. We found it even more beautiful than your VRBO photos.

Your expansive, spectacular ocean view just took our breath away every morning as we lingered over our aromatic Kona coffee on the lanai. Several in our party had not visited the Big Island before and experiencing it with your place as our home base was just a giant bonus. Having access to the Mauna Kea and Hapuna Prince resorts could not have been more convenient. I even used the shuttle back to the townhouse when our group split up on various adventures and I was without a car and it was so easy and fast. We swam with turtles off the Mauna Kea beach and found the snorkeling there surprisingly good. The easy access to horseback riding in Waipio, Manta ray snorkeling from the Kona harbor and art browsing in Hawi, made us realize that your location just truly can’t be beat.

We rarely (if ever) say we want to return to a place because we like to try something new every time we travel (so many places so little time!). But this was so special and worked out so well for our group, we would very much like to return to your piece of paradise. So many, many mahalos for helping put smiles on the faces of our teenagers, taking the work stress away from my husband and making our family getaway the best yet!!'

About David and Rosemary Hopkins

We live in N. California most of the year, where we have enjoyed productive careers in health care. We look forward to spending time at our retreat in paradise with family and friends.

David and Rosemary Hopkins purchased this condo in 2006

Why David and Rosemary Hopkins chose Kohala Coast

We fell in love with Mauna Kea Resort the first time we visited there many years ago. We couldn't wait to own property there to enjoy during our retirement, and so we were thrilled to discover this new low-density development before it was built and when we could have our choice of locations.

What makes this condo unique

Amazing views, sitting on our lanai and watching the sun set over the ocean. Close proximity to Mauna Kea and Hapuna beaches, which are the best on the island. Also, a short drive to Waimea, which has remained a quaint Hawaiian village.

Many Return Visits To Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

Over several years our family (grandparents, adult children, grandchildren, sometimes as many as eight) has stayed at this lovely place many times, maybe seven altogether, including a scheduled return in summer, 2017; never have we been disappointed or felt we should investigate elsewhere. As in so many of the "reviews," the place itself is magical in its flexibility, beauty, comfort and amenities. Other than to say we enthusiastically endorse the following reviews, we want to emphasize the extraordinary activities available to any visitor. On various stays we've gone to Volcano National Park, to Mauna Kea, bought freshly picked white pineapples from a farmer outside of Havi, gone deep sea fishing and dolphin/whale watching, swam with Manta Rays, experienced spear fishing, kayaking, "zip lining, "gone to farmer's markets, taken scuba lessons, snorkeled in places with unparalleled fish populations, watched the grandkids take both lessons and clinics from the teaching professionals at the Mauna Kea Tennis Center, have seen them come home exhausted from a day of beach and pool play at both the Hapuna Prince and Mauna Kea. Along with all the exotic activities, the kids love the pool/hot tub at the Wai 'Ula 'Ula amenity center, and after supper go there to play games in the pool and enjoy the hot tub before bed. The adult kids and their spouses love the exercise equipment at the WUU amenity center. In short, it's heaven to "veg" in the condo, or simply vary activities from day to day, depending on interest, energy level and age.

In short, A101 is a complete destination in itself, but it is also a splendid gateway to an incredibly rich variety of activities!

A wonderful family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We are sadly leaving this beautiful condominium tomorrow. We have been here for a week and have enjoyed every second. My family has traveled to Hawaii since we were young and have visited every island. This year we decided to stay at a condo and enjoy the Mauna Kea Resort. My sister and I and our families stayed here. There were three teenagers and one 9 year old. The condo was perfect! My sister and I each had our own master suite with large bathrooms and the kids shared a room with two sets of bunk beds with their own bathroom. The condo is so beautiful. The windows open completely to the lanai so you do not feel like you are inside. The furnishings are stylish and the kitchen is fully stocked. There are beautiful lounge chairs on the lanai plus a table and chairs and a nice built in barbeque. I loved the location on the first floor with privacy and an unobstructed view of the ocean overlooking beautiful landscaping. The Mauna Kea Resort Club was included with the condo so we were able to park every day down at the hotel and enjoy the most beautiful beach in Hawaii and use the towels and chairs. We were able to charge all food and drinks to the condo and every day we enjoyed lunch at the Hau Tree at the beach. Additionally, we snorkeled both at the Mauna Kea Resort and the Fairmont and Mauna Lani that are very near to the condo. We stocked up at Costco when we first got in so we enjoyed great meals at the condo but were able to enjoy dinner out also. There are wonderful restaurants at the Mauna Kea Resort and nearby. Our children had plenty of things to do and enjoyed the ocean, the beach and bocci ball every day after lunch. This past week has been the perfect family vacation.

The perfect condo!

  • 5 of 5

Great condo. It was stocked well, and the location near the amenity center was perfect. The bunk beds were wonderful for our large family. The view from the patio was picturesque. Better still, the passes to the Mauna Kea and Hapuna Prince hotels and beaches gave us plenty of options. The owners are friendly and helpful. I cannot recommend this condo enough! When we return to the Big Island, we will definitely try to book this condo again.

Condo Review plus some practical advice for a trip to this Island

  • 5 of 5

The condo was wonderful, exactly as advertised plus more. My family of 4 adults and 3 children stayed for 9 nights and didn't want to leave. The house was completely and comfortably furnished with anything you could possibly need. Bath towels aplenty, paper products, soap products, pool towels at the door, pool and beach toys in the garage, kitchen was fully equipped with any cooking item you might need. Washer and dryer with detergent. Wonderful patio with grill. On many evenings we watched the sun set over the golf course, with the ocean in the distance. I would gladly return, but stay longer. We had a problem with the microwave and it was fixed quickly.

The condo was perfect for our Spring Break trip and I recommend it highly.

PRACTICAL ADVICE:

1. Go to the Safeway grocery which is 10 minutes or less from the airport. I know, you are tired from your long flight but if you plan to buy groceries this is the place to go. There is a Foodland store 10 minutes from the condo but prices are very high and selection is limited. We ended up buying the bare necessities at Foodland and then going to Safeway a day later.

2. You must have a car. The condo is in a wonderful community (and has a great pool/spa/workout room) but Mauna Kea and Hapuna Hotel have the beaches so you will spend a lot of time at either of these 2 resorts. By the way, the hotels offer complimentary valet parking. I did walk from the condo to Mauna Kea beach one day and it was a leisurely 50 minute walk.

3. There is a shuttle between Mauna Kea and Hapuna Hotel but it only runs in the evenings during the dinner hours. They do not provide shuttle service during the day and the shuttle does not stop near the condo. It only stops at the 2 hotels.

4. We had dinner one night at Plantation Cafe, a 10 minute drive from the condo. The food and service were wonderful.

5. The concierge at Mauna Kea was very helpful in setting up golf, trip to Volcano National Park and a fishing trip.

We ate several meals at Mauna Kea and Hapuna and it was easy to charge the cost to our condo.

I hope this information is helpful to those considering this condo

What a fantastic experience staying in this condo was for our family trip to Hawaii. Open and very spacious with two master suites each with full bathrooms for the adults and plenty of room for the kids.. We had two families vacationing together for 8 days here with four adults and five kids. We had plenty of space and the place is simply beautiful. Top notch finishes, huge patio with built in fridge, BBQ & sink, granite slabs and slate tile everywhere! Another bonus was being on the ground level, easy in and out access and no worries about kids being kids for anyone downstairs. Having access to both the resorts and their beaches and amenities was over the top, we would alternate mornings and afternoons between them and head back to condo for lunch in-between. Dinner on the patio every night with amazing sunsets, I just cant say enough, I highly recommend this condo - you will not be disappointed.
