About Ted & Betsy Newcomb

Betsy and I lived in and loved the Mount Snow Valley and its people for 10 years prior to our move south as a pastoral family. We knew this would be the location of our future retirement home where our grown family and all our friends could comfortably gather to renew relationships and build new found community. As the sign says in the living room, 'Friends are the family you find along the way.' We hope you'll discover such warmth in this place.

Betsy and I are Massachusetts natives (Amherst & Braintree respectively). We met at college at the University of Massachusetts, setting our eyes on the future. Married one week after graduating, I then continued with my graduate degree in the area of Pastoral Ministry within a progressive denomination. Betsy's field has been greenhouse management. We take a rather pragmatic view of life, raising 3 kids to love the simple pleasures and to revel in the out of doors. It is one of the reasons our hearts leaped when we discovered the property only 11 miles from where we once lived. We knew it was the right place for our future home. And in 2010, construction got underway to fulfill a very big dream that we've long shared.

Ted & Betsy Newcomb purchased this house in 1993

Why Ted & Betsy Newcomb chose Mount Snow Area

As previously noted, we are outdoor people who love the environment and revel in the unique beauty of all the changing seasons. Each has a character uniquely its own. The wetland behind the house is an active ecosystem that enthralls visitors. Between activity in the pond, the interplay of color and shadows, floral beauty, a very dark night sky where the Milky Way band leaps out at you, and easy access to the two incredible mountains and their amenities just around the corner along with all the lakes and trails for outdoor enthusiasts, this is about as good as it gets in our mind's eye!

What makes this house unique

When preparing to build, we fell in love with a special design. It melded Betsy's dream of a Country Farm House with a lovely front porch with my vision of a hybrid Colonial. While we employed skilled framers and other trades people do what they do best, we (along with family and so many friends) have labored countless hours to finish interior and exterior to our liking. It has taken two years to get to this point often working just 1-1/2 days per week save for vacation time, but slowly the dream has been realized. Now we are pleased to share it with you!

The perfect house for a VT retreat

  • 5 of 5

I used the word retreat because that's what if feels like. You're in the midst of the natural wonder and beauty of the Vermont mountains and this house just fits in perfectly with that theme. This is our second rental on Homeaway and our favorite so far.

The property is extremely well cared for and landscaped. The inside is everything you see in the pictures but also very clean. That's our highest priority with any rental and this house exceeded expectations.

Most importantly though, the owner really cares about this home and wants you to enjoy your stay in the area as much as possible. It was obvious when we sent one email asking for a recommendation and received an immediate response with all kinds of helpful links and suggestions. Above and beyond!!

The other house we considered in the area was a house near Manchester, VT. Looking back, we're so glad we chose to stay here. The house is perfect, but the location also can't be beat. It's very close to everything you need but also far enough away to still feel tranquil. The traffic on VT 100 was practically non-existent (granted it must get busier in ski season) so driving around locally was a piece of cake. And the drive to places like Manchester and Bennington was so beautiful and majestic that getting there and back was half the fun.

We highly recommend this house.

Stunning home in great location

  • 5 of 5

This home is just about perfect! We arrived to find the rental in immaculate condition. My husband and I rent from VRBO / Homeaway frequently, and I would say this is the most pristine pet-friendly rental yet. The deck is amazing, the yard is filled with beautiful plantings and I have never seen so many different kinds of butterflies! A walk along the edge of the yard (a wildflower meadow type area) far surpassed any butterfly garden we have ever visited. Excellent birding in the yard, many species new to us. I loved sitting on the deck watching the wildlife use the trail behind the house. The kitchen is amazing, but there are excellent markets, farm stands and restaurants just a quick scenic drive away. We loved the pool table, and the jacuzzi tub is the nicest we have seen. My husband, pets and I can't wait to return!

Great house. Fantastic location. Outstanding owner hospitality!

  • 5 of 5

Our family (2 adults, 2 kids ages 8 and 4) enjoyed a wonderful July 4th week at Starry Night! The property is in a great location convenient to VT 100 which is the scenic gateway to exploring southern and central Vermont (there is a little road noise from VT 100 – but not enough to interrupt the serenity for this DC family. The convenience of beyond right on VT 100 is worth it.). Our family spent the week hiking (Ascutney-Windsor Trail and Little Rock Pond were amazing hikes), rafting, and fishing. Around the house we enjoyed the open floor plan, campfires, billiards, and watching the Sox on NESN (I’m originally from Mass.)

The HomeAway write up is 100% accurate to the property condition plus there were several nice surprises: (1) The outdoor campfire is pristine and the owner left plenty of dried kindling and hardwood firewood. We enjoyed cooking over the fire almost every night… with s’mores, of course. (2) Ted provides great pre-arrival information. After reading the detailed write-up on the local lakes we decided to explore Somerset Reservoir. We planned to stay only a couple hours but eight hours later we had to force ourselves to leave. (3) The home office is packed full of brochures to help you plan your next day’s adventure. (4) The grounds are even nicer than described. Even in July there were very few bugs in the yard.

We’ve rented several properties in multiple locations from VRBO/HomeAway. We know we had a great time when at the end of the trip we are browsing local real estate. This was definitely true of this property. Thanks Ted and Betsy for sharing your home!!

A couple of moose ambled through the Beaver Pond in late Sept. 2012. You'll see a picture on our site to prove it. We've also been entertained by the beaver population in the pond. And a local black bear and cub have made their way along the back side of the house on their way to the pond. Can you say tranquility? To sit out back on the deck some 15' above the yard and feel the peace...priceless! Hike in nearby woods. Behold the expanse of the Milky Way in the dark Night Sky. Have ease of access to Mount Snow from the 'traffic lite' north side just 3 miles away. Enjoy the best that Vermont woodlands has to offer. For on site massage, contract with Marci Himelson with Mount Snow Massage (802) 464-5602. For on site sitters, contract with Deerfield Valley Sitters (802) 490-4729.
