About the property

Studio cottage with kitchenette, sauna, writing porch, sleeps 2

Treat yourself to a relaxing, rejuvenating and inspiring retreat in your own private historic studio cottage in the heart of Stonecrop, the estate owned by Anita M. Smith — renowned writer, artist, historian and “Herb Lady of the Catskills.”

Nestled at the gateway to Woodstock’s legendary Overlook Mountain, Rock City Writer’s Studio is walking distance (just over 1/2 mile) to the Woodstock Village Green, where you’ll find galleries, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. Or just stay home and relax in your bucolic retreat surrounded by wildlife and nature.

Prepare snacks and meals in your well-equipped kitchenette, and serve them on the screened-in bluestone porch, or at the bluestone table on the lawn with a gas grill surrounded by gardens.

Treat yourself to a relaxing sauna in your Nordic sauna for two, followed by a shower under a skylight.

The living room converts into a cozy bedroom at night. We are happy to announce that our original sofabed has been replaced by a new Comfort Sleeper by American Leather. This high-end "marvel of engineering" opens into a luxurious queen bed with a solid platform (no bars, springs or sagging) and a thick high-density foam mattress with luxury linens. Described as a "non-sofabed", the Comfort Sleeper is easy to operate, glides open and closed effortlessly, and is extremely comfortable for a restful night's sleep!

The living room also features a 32” flat-screen HDTV with cable service and a Blu-Ray player, as well as an extensive collection of books and DVDs. Other amenities include spa towels and robes, WIFI, and private parking.

BONUS: Rent Rock City Writer's Studio with Herb Cottage (#3469885) to accommodate family or friends and save! When Rock City Writer's Studio and Herb Cottage are rented together, a 10% discount off both applies. Please inquire for details.

Lovely and cozy with really loud heating

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time in this little cottage. It's in a great location, and even though the stove range is small (just a two-ring burner) we were able to cook a nice meal and breakfasts. By and large we had the kitchen and cooking utensils we needed, though a brief outline from the host about what staples are/aren't stocked would have been great (basic spices yes, cooking oil no). It was beautiful with the snow falling, though I'm sure the garden and green space are lovely in the summer when it's warm! We also appreciated that the walk was shoveled for us in the morning.

A couple things to note:

1. The electric heating is VERY LOUD. It clicked and clanked all night, and we did have some trouble falling/staying asleep because of it.

2. We really appreciated the nice thick wool socks provided to get from the warm house across the cold porch to the sauna! Heat rises really well in the sauna, and we found that while our top halves were toasty and ready for a breather, our shins-and-below were not quite so warm (and maybe even a little chilly), as there was a large temperature differential.

3. Though the listing noted the unusual location of the shower, somehow we skimmed over it and reconciled ourselves to a long-weekend-without-showers until we stumbled upon the kitchen-shower about 30-45 minutes after arriving. (Also note: it's quite small, so if you're planning on showering as a couple, it's a tight squeeze.)

4. The bathroom is a small room and, because it has its own heater, does get quite hot -- we found ourselves having to open the window when using the bathroom to avoid overheating.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review of Rock City Writer's Studio. We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your time at the studio ~ in spite of the unseasonably cold weather and snow! How nice that you took advantage of the kitchenette to prepare meals, and also enjoyed the Nordic sauna ~ although as you noted, heat rises and so it's best to sit on the upper bench with your feet on the lower bench (rather than the floor) to get the most benefit. We're also glad that you appreciated the extra touches, such as wool socks and cooking spices (as well as complimentary coffee and tea). We're so sorry to hear that you were disturbed by the sound of the heating system at night. Unfortunately it is a property of baseboard heat that the heating elements make noise when they're activated. Some guests get around this by raising the temperature before going to bed, and then lowering the thermostat at night so that the heat is not triggered as often. Thank you for pointing out that the shower is off the kitchen (as described in our listing), and also that it's not suitable for 2 people (although it's totally comfortable and appropriate for one person, as intended). Thank you again for your visit. We hope you will consider a return visit in the summer (when heat is not an issue) to also enjoy the garden and yard, which as you pointed out (and clearly could well imagine) are quite lovely when everything is blooming and green!

Quaint and Adorable Little Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

The writer's studio was so adorable and I thought perfect for 2 people. The pull out sofa was very comfortable and we had a great night sleep. The ceiling fan helped a lot with the nights being warm for the month of October (a huge plus). The studio was very close to town, but still made you feel like you had your own private little getaway. The kitchen had everything you needed. Even though there was no oven, there was a microwave and worked out well for us. Everything was very neat and clean. We took in the sights and had a very enjoyable and relaxing time at the Writer's Studio. We will be returning again some time in the future.

Tiny studio next to town

  • 4 of 5

Cute little place. Walkable to town within 10-15 mins. If I stayed here again I might come solo, tight quarters for two people, but overall nice.

Quiet peaceful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The property was just as described. Very clean and nicely furnished, the pull out bed was a nice surprise very comfortable. After spending the morning in Rhinebeck and the afternoon in Woodstock it was such a pleasure to retreat back to Rock City for the evening. We will most definitely return.
