CASA LA FRONTERA DEL CIELO (The House Next To Heaven)

The Only One With Spectacular Views Of Mountains AND Pacific Ocean

You will believe it only when you see it in person (as the photos posted here unfortunately do not do justice to the nearly 360 degrees of panoramas). This house sits standing watch at the top of a mountain, at an altitude of over 3200 feet, above the town of Atenas overlooking the great western valley that extends all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Located as it is at 'Heaven's doorstep', it has the most astonishing views found in Central America available right out of your living room, day or night. Not only can you see the Costa Rican lush (possessing all conceivable shades of green!) rainforest from most of the perimeter of the property, but can also take in the Pacific coast and ocean from your infinity pool. Enjoy your very own private garden teeming with wildlife, vivid tropical flora and fruit trees including avocado, lemon, mango, banana, plantain, guava, coffee and other exotic delicacies. Watch and listen to the local wild birds as they sing and flit from tree to tree in the grove behind the house. (You'll be astounded at how close the little chicks get when they pay you a visit at the pool during one of Costa Rica's gentle rains.) Enjoy the soothing breezes from your hammock in the front of the house, or in the house’s unique reading room which allows you, while staying indoors, to enjoy the cross wind that comes up one side of the mountain and down the other. [National Geographic named Atenas as having the BEST climate in the world. Experience it for yourself!] And the vistas don’t quit. You can still drink them in during the unparalleled experience of your very own private 'jacuzzi with a view', or while bar-b-queuing or dining al fresco in the house’s veranda.

The house, which sleeps four to six people, is itself an architectural marvel. The striking wrought iron winding staircase and railings naturally draw your eyes to the dramatic twenty-foot-high wood ceilings in the main house. The kitchen’s silver and gold-veined marble counters invite you to join your other guests to sit and share in a meal or cocktails. The open design of the reading room, with its large windows that make you feel like you are outside while still indoor, provides a road map to relaxation. Excellently appointed throughout, the house’s two other bedrooms and three bathrooms are, likewise, marked by impressive attention to detail as evidenced by exquisite marble and wood finishes, and finely crafted furniture and fixtures.

We suggest that our guests sample the following at least one evening during their stay with us: try the Jacuzzi while turning the outside lights off. On a cloudless night this will prove to be a truly transcendental experience. The beauty of the nighttime sky at our location on the mountaintop is striking. You will swear you can just stretch your hand and touch the ancient astronomers’ celestial sphere. (A sneak preview can be seen in one of our posted photos.) It’s one way to find out why we are named The House Next To Heaven.

A five minute drive to Atenas, but also, given its central location in the country, it is close to most of the main attractions in Costa Rica: including its volcanoes, butterfly gardens, rainforests equipped with canopy tours and zip lines waiting for you to explore them and, yes, it’s within driving distance of the famous Pacific coast beaches. Multiple tours in the area allow for boating, white water rafting, hiking, horseback riding, and so much more. For those seeking culture, Escazú (a sophisticated bilingual area of fabulous restaurants, stores, exclusive boutiques, English language bookstores and movies) is also a 45-minute drive away.

Explore Casa La Frontera del Cielo's location utilizing the interactive map application and Gogobot's guide (below) on this page to see its close vicinity to all the local popular attractions!

As an additional service to our house guests, we offer a fee-based airport pick up and drop-off to help you avoid the potential hassles involved in the transitions into and out of your time in Costa Rica (something to particularly consider when you have night-time travel plans, but a nice comfort to have in any event). We also provide car rentals and tours to all corners of the country, including the Poas and Arenal volcanoes, a 'crocodile tour' to Jaco, a tour to the La Paz Waterfall gardens, and tours custom made to our guests' requests throughout Costa Rica.

About MIGUEL F. GARCIA

The house’s owners, the Garcia family, originally hails from the beautiful island country of Puerto Rico. As is the custom with all islanders, they take their vacations together as an extended family. And together they have traveled all over the world searching for the perfect out-of-the-way place for the family to retire. When they arrived at the house in Atenas they knew they had found what would become the refuge from their hectic lives. While waiting for the right time to retire, the Garcias felt it would be a shame if other people did not get to enjoy their find, which lead to their decision to turn the property into a rental. They are now thrilled to share it with you; so that you too may be a able to step into Casa La Frontera del Cielo, and experience what it feels like to be at heaven’s doorstep…

MIGUEL F. GARCIA purchased this house in 2012

Why MIGUEL F. GARCIA chose Alajuela Province

Casa La Frontera del Cielo is not just a house that offers its occupants stunning views, a beautiful garden, and exceptional opportunities for observing the local Costa Rican flora and fauna. It is a five minute drive to the unique mountain town of Atenas, but also, given its central location in the country, it is close to most of the main attractions in Costa Rica: including its volcanoes, butterfly gardens, rain-forests equipped with canopy tours and zip lines waiting for you to explore them and, yes, it’s within driving distance of the famous Pacific coast beaches. Multiple tours in the area allow for boating, white water rafting, hiking, horseback riding, and so much more. For those seeking culture, Escazú (a sophisticated bilingual area of fabulous restaurants, stores, exclusive boutiques, English language bookstores and movies) is a 45-minute drive away. Costa Rica's main airport and capital city of San José are also within an even shorter driving distance from our property.

What makes this house unique

We also provide car rentals and tours to all corners of the country. The house tours are frequently custom made to our guests' requests. The closest to heaven on earth!

  • 5 of 5

This is the closest to heaven we've been! The house is literally in the clouds and the pictures of the view don't do it justice. The location in Atenas worked great for us - the town is easily accessible by car with good supermarkets and restaurants. All activities were within an hour and a half drive - all beautiful and gave us a chance to explore different areas. We did zip lining near Miramar, whitewater rafting near La Fortuna, surfing at Jaco beach, and also visited La Paz waterfall gardens. The house and grounds are BEAUTIFUL and comfortable. The views are constantly changing and never get boring. We visited during green season (rain) and the weather forecast was thunderstorms everyday, all day. We experienced sunny mornings thru 2pm when the clouds would roll up from the valley. The sky was clear on most nights by sunset. We were able to work on our tans, enjoy the pool and hot tub everyday. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook - we cooked a lot and it worked great! The beds are SO COMFORTABLE and we all commented how it was the best sleep we've ever had! Temperatures at night are amazing and there is always a breeze blowing thru the house. The property managers Aad and Marian are great! They helped arrange all of our activities that were all top-notch. They assisted with airport transfers, rental car, and even arranged for dinner to be waiting for us upon arrival after a long day of travel. All of our needs were met and expectations exceeded - from initial communication with Miguel (owner) at booking, planning with Aad to final departure. This is a fantastic house and experience, and we plan to come back our next time in Costa Rica!

Owner's Response: Dear Drew, Thank you so much for your most wonderful review! We always tell our guests that no A/C is ever required at Casa La Frontera del Cielo, even at the height of summer. We also mention that Atenas and the surrounding attractions are, not only absolutely safe, but easily accessible from the property. All the same, we are certain that potential guests would rather hear it from previous renters! :-) Our house managers, Aad and Marian Veltman, certainly go out of their way to provide their airport pick-up, tour services and local recommendations in a timely, professional and friendly fashion. Our management team never tires of hearing that their efforts are paying off. Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for enumerating our property's highlights in such a thorough fashion. We hope you will give us a chance to provide another unforgettable experience for you in the future. Muchísimos cariños, La Familia Garcia

Looks can be deceiving

  • 2 of 5

(due to limited writing space further investigating reviews elsewhere is recommended ;)).The property is very scenic and beautiful at first glance yet it is not the only place in which you will find such views while in Costa Rica ( Manuel Antonio will definitely provide gorgeous views no matter where you stay). The house managers were not in the least bit helpful ( specially Aad he added tremendous stress as we were departing to Costa Rica ). There is no free airport pickup as advertised. There are a few trees that produce fruit as describe ( mangos and limes). The jacuzzi is available for use however the engines don't always work. The layout is not fitted for 4-6 adults as described. The "guest house" is the servants headquarters; when we arrived the door lock was broken and despite our early 3 month reservation this was not fixed. The shower at the "guest house" had no power and left us sharing the other bedroom's bathrooms which were in good condition. All the beds in the house are very old and the springs can be felt and the sheets are dirty, rough and stained. The kitchen area is very comfortable and they do provide a reasonable amount of dish ware; pots, pans, and utensils in case that it's needed. we made several attempts to obtain an address and were never able to obtain one; the owner and managers gave us excuse after excuse 1st stating there's no addresses in C.R.(which is not completely false; being a Central American country the address is difficult to understand in comparison to American addresses). However after contacting other hotels we were told that of course there are addresses. It was difficult to create an itinerary without knowing our exact location. when I contacted Homeaway and was given the owners direct number in regards to obtaining an address he specifically ask me "why I needed it" after explaining that I wanted to know to plan accordingly and to provide it to relatives in case of an emergency he exclaimed a bit annoyed that he "did not follow my reasoning." Addresses are important when you are traveling specially if it's a foreign country; in fact you need to provide this details to Customs; instead I got coordinate points. The owner also asked for a cash deposit ( and although at first glance and based on the booking sites strict policy on paying in cash it felt a little shady the owner did refund the deposit in 2 installments a week after our stay).

Owner's Response: Hi Michelle, Wow! We can certainly agree on one thing contained in your review: “due to limited writing space further investigating reviews elsewhere is recommended”! Our family, the Veltmans, and the rest of our management team, who have made Casa La Frontera del Cielo into a rental property that has provided outstanding Costa Rican experiences to hundreds of guests over the past five years - as evidenced by the 80+ positive reviews our property has garnered to this date, thank you for your patronage of our rental property and for the effort you put forward in your review. Having said that, and taking into account our personal and thorough knowledge of our own property, we have to conclude that your review is a deeply flawed product. Responding to all of your distortions, including the outlandish and really inane ones such as that we refused to give you an address (you stayed AT the property, yet we somehow managed to Never give you the address - Seriously? :-) ), that the guest casita “is the servants Headquarters”(?!), and that we “advertised free airport pickup” (please check the listing, we clearly state that there is a fee if you chose to avail yourself of this option) one by one, would take more space than is available. Likewise, recounting how you turned down our immediate offer of having a technician go by the property to take a look at the shower in the casita, along with the details of your mistreatment of our property managers - showing a complete lack of empathy for them, would render our response unreadable. Suffice it to say that the sum of your distortions simply constitutes an unfortunate misrepresentation of our property and its managers. We would, again, refer any potential guests to our other 82 reviews for both a more accurate depiction of Casa La Frontera del Cielo, and a less biased one of our wonderful property managers, Aad and Marian Veltman. Sincerely, The Garcia Family

Beautiful Peaceful and Private

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa La Frontera Del Cielo for a little over a week and we absolutely loved every minute. This was our second trip to Costa Rica in 6 months and we were sure we wanted to stay in a property managed by Aad and Marion they absolutely are the most friendly and professional property managers in town. They recommended this property for our stay in Costa Rica and boy were they on point. They also coordinated a day trip to an outstanding zip line tour for us. THe home is modern and beautifully furnished. The kitchen is very well appointed. The outdoor kitchen was a bonus since we love to grill. Marvin the grounds keeper lives at the foot of the driveway, he is very friendly and completely respectful of your privacy. I found it very comforting that he had a watchful eye on the property. The grounds are simply beautiful with several fruit trees and tropical plants. The view is simply amazing. On a clear day we could see all the way to the Gulf of Nacoya. Although we were visiting during the rainy season it is unreal to watch the clouds come over the valley and onto the patio. This was so peaceful and quiet exactly what we had hoped for.

Owner's Response: Dear Mike, We like to highlight Aad and Marian's outstanding job in our property's description. They keep working to come up with new and exciting tours to satisfy all the individual tastes of our guests; from leisurely coffee plantation strolls, to exciting visits to the surrounding rainforest to see the local flora and fauna, to more adrenaline charged tours like white water rafting, zip lining or bungee jumping in the jungle. It is extra nice, though, when it is our guests who directly reference all of it in their reviews! Thank you also for highlighting both the house's view and amenities. We also personally love the rainy season because - as you were able to experience firsthand - that's when you see the most stunning cloud displays from the house. We would love to host your whole family again at Casa La Frontera del Cielo! Cariños, La Familia Garcia

Amazing house with breathtaking views. The house was comfortable and well equipped. Our family had a wonderful time. Atenas is a nice little village with good restaurants and 2 grocery stores. It has everything you need. We felt like home.

Owner's Response: Dear Dany, Thank you so much for your kind words. We frequently forget to highlight Casa La Frontera del Cielo's - as well as the nearby town of Atena's - multiple modern conveniences. :-) The people of Costa Rica (or "Ticos", as they like to be called) are truly incomparable for their hospitality; and the people of Atenas, being from the small provincial town that it is, are indeed (as you found out) especially friendly. I hope you come and stay with us again soon. We'll be thrilled to have you back! Muchísimos cariños, The Garcia Family

This is the place you want to stay in Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

The property, pool area, jacuzzi, living spaces, and bedrooms are beautiful, modern and cozy. Spring like weather all year round. Close to Atenas, San José, Alajuela and other interesting places. You will feel safe and will have a spectacular view of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Local food places to eat everywhere at very reasonable prices. Beautiful starry nights, coffee haciendas and nice friendly people will make you feel in paradise.

Everything we imagined and more!

  • 5 of 5

As all reviews have said, this property is a true gem! My wife and I loved our stay and appreciate the great communication from the owner and property managers. The pictures barely do the property justice - it is breathtaking and well appointed. Amazing native birds (including Toucans) are abundant on the grounds which are extremely well-kept. The home is very private and has all of the comforts you could wish for. Atenas is a great town to use as home-base for exploring the volcanoes, beaches and beauty of Costa Rica. My wife and I had a wonderful time and can't wait to visit again in the future!

Owner's Response: Dear Brandon, We have been incredibly lucky to be able to assemble what is an extraordinary group of individuals to take care of our property and our renters' needs. Our guests never fail to mention Marvin's excellent work on the garden, as well as his wonderful disposition. And Aad and Marian, likewise, get uniformly rave reviews over their care of our renters during their stays. They keep working to come up with new and exciting tours to satisfy all the individual tastes of our guests! (And, yes, we too often neglect to highlight all the tropical bird watching that can be done without even having to leave the property! :-) ) We only wish we could share the property with more people! Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We would love to have our family back at Casa La Frontera del Cielo anytime! Muchísimos cariños, La Familia Garcia
