CASA LA FRONTERA DEL CIELO (The House Next To Heaven)

The Only One With Spectacular Views Of Mountains AND Pacific Ocean

You will believe it when you see it (as the photos posted here unfortunately do not do justice to the nearly 360 degrees of panoramas). This house sits standing watch at the top of a mountain, at an altitude of over 3200 feet, above the town of Atenas overlooking the great western valley that extends all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Located as it is at 'Heaven's doorstep', it has the most astonishing views found in Central America available right out of your living room, day or night. Not only can you see the Costa Rican lush (possessing all conceivable shades of green!) rainforest from most of the perimeter of the property, but can also take in the Pacific coast and ocean from your infinity pool. Enjoy your very own private garden teeming with wildlife, vivid tropical flora and fruit trees including avocado, lemon, mango, banana, plantain, guava, coffee and other exotic delicacies. Watch and listen to the local wild birds as they sing and flit from tree to tree in the grove behind the house. (You'll be astounded at how close the little chicks get when they pay you a visit at the pool during one of Costa Rica's gentle rains.) Enjoy the soothing breezes from your hammock in the front of the house, or in the house’s unique reading room which allows you, while staying indoors, to enjoy the cross wind that comes up one side of the mountain and down the other. [National Geographic named Atenas as having the BEST climate in the world. Experience it for yourself!] And the vistas don’t quit. You can still drink them in during the unparalleled experience of the house’s 'jacuzzi with a view', or while bar-b-queuing or dining al fresco in the house’s veranda.

The house, which sleeps four to six people, is itself an architectural marvel. The striking wrought iron winding staircase and railings naturally draw your eyes to the dramatic twenty-foot-high wood ceilings in the main house. The kitchen’s silver and gold-veined marble counters invite you to join your other guests to sit and share in a meal or cocktails. The open design of the reading room, with its large windows that make you feel like you are outside while still indoor, provides a road map to relaxation. Excellently appointed throughout, the house’s two other bedrooms and three bathrooms are, likewise, marked by impressive attention to detail as evidenced by exquisite marble and wood finishes, and finely crafted furniture and fixtures.

We suggest that our guests sample the following at least one evening during their stay with us: try the Jacuzzi while turning the outside lights off. On a cloudless night this will prove to be a truly transcendental experience. The beauty of the nighttime sky at our location on the mountaintop is striking. You will swear you can just stretch your hand and touch the ancient astronomers’ celestial sphere. (A sneak preview can be seen in one of our posted photos.) It’s one way to find out why we are named The House Next To Heaven.

A five minute drive to Atenas, but also, given its central location in the country, it is close to most of the main attractions in Costa Rica: including its volcanoes, butterfly gardens, rainforests equipped with canopy tours and zip lines waiting for you to explore them and, yes, it’s within driving distance of the famous Pacific coast beaches. Multiple tours in the area allow for boating, white water rafting, hiking, horseback riding, and so much more. For those seeking culture, Escazú (a sophisticated bilingual area of fabulous restaurants, stores, exclusive boutiques, English language bookstores and movies) is also a 45-minute drive away.

Explore Casa La Frontera del Cielo's location utilizing the interactive map application and Gogobot's guide (below) on this page to see its close vicinity to all the local popular attractions!

You may also check out the interactive map on our Facebook page.

While there view our slide show 'A Day at Casa La Frontera del Cielo'.

As an additional service to our house guests, we offer a fee-based airport pick up and drop-off to help you avoid the potential hassles involved in the transitions into and out of your time in Costa Rica (something to particularly consider when you have night-time travel plans, but a nice comfort to have in any event). We also provide car rentals and tours to all corners of the country, including the Poas and Arenal volcanoes, a 'crocodile tour' to Jaco, a tour to the La Paz Waterfall gardens, and tours custom made to our guests' requests throughout Costa Rica.

About MIGUEL F. GARCIA

The house’s owners, the Garcia family, originally hails from the beautiful island country of Puerto Rico. As is the custom with all islanders, they take their vacations together as an extended family. And together they have traveled all over the world searching for the perfect out-of-the-way place for the family to retire. When they arrived at the house in Atenas they knew they had found what would become the refuge from their hectic lives. While waiting for the right time to retire, the Garcias felt it would be a shame if other people did not get to enjoy their find, which lead to their decision to turn the property into a rental. They are now thrilled to share it with you; so that you too may be a able to step into Casa La Frontera del Cielo, and experience what it feels like to be at heaven’s doorstep…

For those seeking culture, Escazú (a sophisticated bilingual area of fabulous restaurants, stores, exclusive boutiques, English language bookstores and movies) is a 45-minute drive away. Costa Rica's main airport and capital city of San José are also within an even shorter driving distance from our property.

Excellent Vacation Home!!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week at Casa La Frontera del Cielo. The house was perfect and beautiful, but we spent much of our time outside on the patio and in the pool. The kids couldn't get enough of the pool, and the views were surreal! The grounds were immaculate and it was wonderful having Marvin there on premises. Aad and Marian were great throughout the entire process and helped us setup a crocodile tour and white water rafting. Both tours are highly recommended. Miguel was so easy to deal with when we were booking. We are already talking about another trip back to Costa Rica, and will stay at this home again. Couldn't be more satisfied. Thanks for allowing us to stay at your beautiful home.

A very beutiful property

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here in Cota Rica was truly a memorable one. The house was wonderful with everything a person should need while on vacation. They even had a coffee grinder for the wonderful Costa Rican Coffee. Great pool and hot tub. The property managers "Marian" did a wonderful job as well setting up the activities and getting us settled in. I'd highly recommend the Whitewater rafting, some of the best I've ever seen.

Thanks for the Stay!!!

Owner's Response: Dear Jason, Thank you for highlighting the property and the house's many amenities! Aad and Marian get uniformly rave reviews over their care of our renters during their stays. They keep working to come up with new and exciting tours to satisfy all the individual tastes of our guests; from leisurely coffee plantation strolls, to exciting visits to the surrounding rainforest to see the local flora and fauna, to more adrenaline charged tours like white water rafting, zip lining or bungee jumping in the jungle! Aad and Marian and all of us involved in the management of Casa La Frontera del Cielo always strive to have to have our guests' stays be the best. It thrills us to no end when we hear that our efforts are paying off! Thanks again for such a wonderful review. Cariños, La Familia Garcia

Relaxing stay with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

Just came back from a week in Atenas at Miguel's house in the mountains. Six of us (4 adults and 2 teenagers) made the house and casita our base to see Costa Rica. It was a perfect location on a small, but very accessible road a few minutes outside of Atenas which is a quaint little town with two large grocery stores and 8-10 restaurants all within walking distance. I am not sure why people say this area requires a 4 wheel drive, because I could get to the house and all over town in my accord no problem.

The weather was perfect and on most of the days we could enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean and the incredible sunsets. The house was very clean and comfortable with plenty of sheets and towels and an on site laundry which is great for packing light. The hosts communicated very well before, during, and after our stay. Miguel arranged for a great White Water adventure and provided advice on restaurants and other attractions. The house has a large kitchen to cook the fresh food from the Atenas Market. We really enjoyed eating at the outside kitchen/grill area overlooking the valley and ocean. I think we had every house meal outside. You can't say enough about the view and pool. We spent several afternoons just enjoying the house which is unlike our normal adventurous nature. It was very nice to have Marvin, the groundskeeper/caretaker at the gate, but he was never in the way. We felt very safe in the upscale area. I would recommend this place to anyone considering traveling to Costa Rica and can't figure out whether to stay at a volcano or beach. It takes a long time to get anywhere in Costa Rica due to the windy roads and traffic of slow trucks and broken down cars. This house is close to the airport, but far enough out to not be in the city traffic. The location allowed us to go to the cloud forest one day and the beach the next. It is hot down by the beach, so it was very nice to come up to the house and get in the cool mountain air in the evening. You don't need air conditioning at all because the air is cool and the house has huge windows with great airflow. It got to about 85F most days which kept the infinity pool warm, and the hot tub would warm up in about 30 minutes. I would recommend this house to my friends and family (even my mother!)

Owner's Response: Dear Andrew, Thank you so much for your most wonderful review! We always tell our guests that no A/C is ever required at Casa La Frontera del Cielo, even at the height of summer. We also mention that Atenas and the surrounding attractions are, not only absolutely safe, but easily accessible from the property. All the same, we are certain that potential guests would rather hear it from previous renters! :-) Our house managers, Aad and Marian Veltman, certainly go out of their way to provide their airport pick-up, tour services and local recommendations in a timely, professional and friendly fashion. And, as you so aptly point out, Marvin is always willing to help our guests along with the gift of his wonderful smile. Our management team never tires of hearing that their efforts are paying off. Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for enumerating our property's highlights in such a thorough fashion. We hope you will give us a chance to provide another unforgettable - and, hopefully longer- experience for you in the future. Muchísimos cariños, La Familia Garcia

Beautiful home with stunning views.

  • 5 of 5

If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica and the Atenas area, this home is an excellent choice. The house is beautiful inside and out and the views from the back patio and pool are simply breathtaking. Aad and Marian are the managers and provide airport pick up and drop off along with a wide variety of tours. They do a fantastic job. The house is convenient to Atenas and most area attractions. We had planned on seeing more of the country but we wound up staying in the house more because of the marvelous views and comfortable weather. We had such a great time in Costa Rica we would definitely come back again if this property were available.

Great house with an awesome view.

  • 4 of 5

First the the house is phenomenal. The location is in a perfect climate with a fantastic view from the back patio. The sunsets are fantastic. There are so many different bird species that reside in the area which we saw on a daily basis (including macaws and parakeets). We had plenty of privacy and always felt safe. Marvin the grounds/gate keeper is wonderful but speaks very limited english. I recommend stopping at the grocery store and getting ALL of your supplies for the week or you will need to pay a taxi to take you back and forth as the closest stores are very limited and the hike bake up the miles long hill will stress even the best of shape person. There is free wifi which was invaluable when trying to navigate our vacation and researching Aad.

We did arrange for Aad and Marian to pick us up and take us back to the airport. Aad picked us up from the airport and was nice but abrupt and seemed to be put out. When we asked about going to Manuel Antonio he said it was way too far and would be very expensive. We had assumed that they would arrange all of our tours. NOT true! When we called the next morning to arrange our tours we were told that someone else had called them right after he dropped us off and they wouldn't be able to take us until the following week. We were stunned. That was it, no offer to help us, no recommendations, NOTHING! So here we are in a foreign country and I'm the only one that speaks very limited spanish. The cell phone in the house is a pre-paid burner phone and we were not left any instructions for the cost of it. So add another huge expense to having to use our own phones. The numbers listed in the black book for taxi's are for spanish speaking companies. Come to find out Aad and Marian are working illegally and do not have any of the required permits. They manage 15 other properties so if you think they are there to help only you, think again! I called and was able to get a number for an English speaking driver named Walter. Walter and his crew saved our entire vacation. We left a his business card in the book . Not only did his company take us everywhere we wanted to go, but they were safe drivers, very informative, patient and kind. Extremely professional! Our trip to Manuel Antonio was very reasonable and was SO worth it. So to sum it up, the house is great with beautiful views, the weather was perfect, get to know the REAL "tico's", enjoy the real Costa Rica, and call Walter!

Owner's Response: Hi Christina, We are sorry to hear that there were some issues with your stay as we strive to have our guests' visits to Casa La Frontera del Cielo be absolutely perfect! It is interesting that you had a problem with our property managers, Aad and Marian, since they get uniformly excellent reviews from all our guests. We also constantly receive unsolicited praises for the Veltmans in our communications with our renters (who frequently add a side note just to point out how happy they were with their service). The problem was that you did not book any visits/tours in advance with the Veltmans. It seems that you misunderstood how our tourist services at Casa La Frontera del Cielo work and thought that Aad and Marian would be either on site or ready to take you out on short notice. This is why we always provide the Veltmans' contact information the moment we confirm your reservation, so you will have plenty of time to arrange, not only your arrival at the property, but any tours of the country which might interest you. As you saw, Aad and Marian manage a number of properties as well as a thriving local tour company (that's why they are so knowledgeable and good at it!). They also conduct all their tours personally instead of handing you over to a an employee. So, if guests take the risk of not booking ahead, then they might arrive at the property and find out that they are already booked as happened to you... In the Veltmans' own words: "we had another booking so we could not take them. Because we like to guarantee the quality of our tours we do all of them ourselves and do not like to hire somebody else to fill in last minute only to make more money." In regards to the report that you felt you had been left to your own devices at the property they responded: "we can see that they were disappointed but they also did not ask us for any advise what to do. We always like to respect people's privacy and do not want to force our thoughts upon them. We always check on guests after arrival if all is good, and they did not mention any dissatisfaction..." We are so sorry that your experience was not the best. The silver lining in this is that from now on we will emphasize with our guests even more that optimally they should book with the Veltmans any tours they may want well before their arrival at our property. We would otherwise like to thank you for writing such a wonderful description of our property and such a thorough review! Muchos cariños, La Familia Garcia

Amazing view

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time that my husband and I have stayed at this beautiful home. The view is absolutely amazing! The home is in very nice condition, it is well appointed and comfortable. We enjoyed many an evening out on the patio in the lounge chairs or at the outdoor dining table watching as the sunset and night fell on the mountains. The grounds and the pool are kept impeccably clean by the very kind and unobtrusive gardener, Marvin. The property managers, Aad and Marian were wonderful about adjusting their time to meet us at the home as our flight was late arriving. All in all, this is a wonderful property with wonderful people caring for it, and you! We look forward to returning!
