Northeast Alexandria Townhome Rental Photos and Description

3 bedroom, 3.5 bath town home on cul-de-sac, backing on city park (sleeps 6-8)

Captain's Quarters of Old Town Alexandria is ideal for a special family vacation or for short-term military, corporate or U.S. Foreign Service lodging. It is a fully furnished town home in the northeast section of Old Town Alexandria, only three blocks to the George Washington Parkway to the east and five blocks from U.S. Route 1 to the west. For vacation visitors, this makes Captain's Quarters much more convenient to the U.S. Capitol, the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, Kennedy Center and other attractions than traveling from many parts of Washington, DC itself. Plus you will have a quiet and safe oasis surrounded by a private street and city park when you return each day, with a free reserved off-street place to park if you will be driving.

Captain's Quarters also is perfect temporary lodging for those on military, corporate, diplomatic assignments, or Foreign Service home leave -- with ample space for an extended stay. (If you qualify, ask about discounts we offer to active-duty military, Foreign Service and first-responder families for vacations or temporary lodging in connection with home leave, temporary assignments, and permanent change of station (PCS) moves.)

Our location is ideal for accessing Washington, DC; Crystal City; the Pentagon; Ft. Belvoir, National Harbor, and other locations in the DC-northern Virginia area via foot, bike, car, bus, Metro rail, taxi or water taxi.

This home-away-from-home is a 3-bedroom, 3½-bath, two story townhouse with a two-thirds finished basement. Its amenities include a custom-tiled steam bath and Tempur-Pedic Cloud mattress with ergonomic adjustment in the master bedroom; park view, ceiling fan and combination down/memory foam mattress topper in the second bedroom; and a queen-size futon bed and work-desk arrangement in the third bedroom. There are two full baths (one with shower/tub) on the top floor. The main floor has a gourmet galley kitchen with Jenn-Air double oven; adjacent dining room and sitting area; living room with wood-burning fireplace and TV. On the two main floors, there is abundant light from double-pane windows and the French door to the patio, plus Solatube natural lighting in the upstairs foyer and master bathroom.

In the finished area of the basement is a family and media room with 3D wide-screen LCD television and surround sound. If an extra bed is needed, there is a queen-size sofa bed. Also in the basement is a newly created full bathroom with shower. In the adjacent, partly finished area of the basement is a laundry room and storage area available for guest use.

The entire house has central A/C (with humidifier for wintertime); WiFi access to Internet; and reserved parking directly in front of the house. Throughout the home is artwork collected from Navy assignments and travel around the world, plus creations from Alexandria’s many contemporary artists.

Not that you will spend much time inside with so much to see and do outside. A large patio in back has a BBQ grill, table, chairs and umbrella. The patio opens to a quiet neighborhood park with an enclosed children’s playground nearby. Only a few blocks away are the Potomac River with Alexandria’s beautiful river-front parks and the 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail. Also nearby are restaurants and cafes, grocery stores, and shops. The heart of Old Town is 10 blocks away – a nice walk, quick drive, or inexpensive ride on the local DASH bus.

Your arrival package includes an 'A to Z' guide to Captain's Quarters and the neighborhood -- plus driving and public transportation maps, walking routes, tourist guides, restaurant menus, and discount coupons for local activities. Alexandria's calendar is packed with parades, festivals and performances throughout the year.

In case you are new to Old Town: It is nationally recognized for its early American architecture, boutiques, art and antique galleries, historic sites and award-winning restaurants. Founded by Scots in 1749, Alexandria quickly grew to become a bustling and wealthy seaport. In 1796, the Duc de Liancourt declared Alexandria “the handsomest town in Virginia – indeed it is among the finest in the United States.” Today, one popular tourist guide has this to say: “Older than Washington DC itself, Alexandria, Virginia, is a historic city that melds the charm of yesteryear with attractions desired most by visitors today, including top restaurants, chic boutiques, interesting art galleries, lively bars, and notable sights” (Moon Travel Guide, 2012). At least 75% of Alexandria's stores, restaurants and spas are locally owned and can't be found anywhere else!

The many sites and activities available in Old Town Alexandria include:

-- Only 5 blocks away, the Potomac River and 18-mile Mt. Vernon trail for walking, running and biking (with bike rental available in Old Town);

-- Historic Gadsby’s Tavern, a center for food, drink and conversation since 1770 (George Washington and Thomas Jefferson dined here);

-- Historic Christ Church, completed in 1773 (George Washington and Robert E. Lee prayed here);

-- Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary, where Martha Washington purchased remedies for George's hangovers;

-- Many historic homes open to tourists including Robert E. Lee’s boyhood home and, only 8 miles down the Parkway, George Washington’s restored home and plantation at Mt. Vernon;

-- Monuments and memorials including the George Washington Masonic Memorial, historic cemeteries and a statue of a soldier marking where young men met to march south to fight for the Confederacy at the outset of the Civil War.

-- Great neighborhoods for shopping, restaurants and night life including Old Town's King Street and bohemian Del Ray, both less than a mile away;

-- Boat tours and water taxis to Georgetown, National Harbor and Mt. Vernon;

-- Water sports at the nearby Washington sailing marina (sailboat rentals), Tidal Basin (paddle boats) and Belle Haven marina (sailboat and kayak rentals);

-- The new National Harbor convenient, shopping and entertainment complex, just across the Potomac from Alexandria;

-- Convenient access to the Pentagon, Ft. Myers, Ft. Belvoir, Andrews and Bolling Air Force bases, the new Air Force Memorial, Marine Corps Headquarters at Henderson Hall and other military facilities;

-- All of the sites and activities available in the nation’s capital,with DC only 2 stoplights and 4.5 miles away.

Less than 3 blocks away is direct bus service to the Braddock Road Metro stop, Pentagon, Crystal City and downtown Washington, DC. It’s 7 blocks to the Braddock Road Metro rail station with frequent trains going to National Airport, the Pentagon and Washington. Alexandria also has its own Amtrak train station with regular eastern corridor rail service.

When you are finished with touring or work for the day, you will return to a quiet retreat in Old Northport, a private neighborhood of only 38 townhouses completed in 1978. Captain’s Quarters itself was remodeled in 2010-2012 with all new appliances, upgraded bathrooms, new flooring, new HVAC system, Casablanca ceiling fans, LED lighting, and many other improvements.

Please note that, during the off-season months of October to mid-March, we are accepting reservations only for rentals of at least two weeks, with substantial discounts for renting for a term of one month to one year. Military, diplomatic and first-responder families will continue to receive an additional discount.

About Steve Clawson

Captain's Quarters is owned by an international development manager (Luz) and a retired captain (Steve) whose Navy career took him from the cornfields of Indiana to assignments in the Caribbean, Italy and the Mediterranean, Japan and the western Pacific, and Hawaii. In between were several assignments in the Washington DC area, where Alexandria became a favorite hangout -- combining history with friendly people, good restaurants and plenty of activities. Now we live 30 miles away on the Chesapeake Bay and use Captain's Quarters as our city retreat when not rented.

Steve Clawson purchased this townhome in 2010

Why Steve Clawson chose Alexandria

It's a calm, quiet and safe oasis sandwiched between the bustle of Washington DC and the tourist attractions, shopping, restaurants and nightlife of Old Alexandria. Captain's Quarters is one of only 38 townhouses in the development. The exterior architecture echoes the late 1700s but the home has the inside amenities of 1978 when built, plus modern conveniences added during an extensive 2010-2012 renovation. In front of Captain's Quarters is a private street and cul-de-sac where children ride bikes and draw in chalk on the street. In the back is a small city park with room for Frisbee, soccer or a baseball game. The far end of the park is devoted to a fenced children's playground with swings, slide and elevated playhouse. As one of our rental guests commented in our guest log, the park is "a true neighborhood gem."

What makes this townhome unique

Work, play or tour all day in Washington, Alexandria or the surrounding area -- and then come home to peace, comfort, friendly neighbors, and nice shops, restaurants and bars nearby.

The home itself has plenty of space for 6 adults or for families of up to 8 if the optional queen bed is set up in the family room.

Excellent...Immaculate, house fully equipped with easy access to DC.

  • 5 of 5

Home newly remodeled; beautiful. Kitchen bathrooms, bedrooms with everything you will need or want for your stay. Has park off the back yard for kids to play. Can catch a bus to the metro or drive to the Eisenhower station (7 dollar parking). Great food store (Harris Teeter) 5min by car and local small liquor and food store 1 block away.

The owner Steve is diligent with all communications and is proactive with anything needed. The home provides a nice quiet location, in sharp contrast to the busy DC area. Highly recommend this home to anyone wishing to visit the DC area

Very nice

  • 5 of 5

The house was very nice. It was clean and comfortable and had everything that we needed. Steve the owner was great to work with. He called us the day we got there to be sure everything was okay and called on our last day. If I ever get back to DC I will not hesitate to rent his home again.

Outstanding DC rental

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have been happier with this experience. The townhouse is generously proportioned (no problems for my family of 5), immaculately maintained and perfectly outfitted with modern appliances, a clean design aesthetic and comfortable furniture you'll be happy to collapse onto after a long day of wandering up and down the Mall.

We were also grateful for the convenience of guaranteed parking out front and access to a small park directly off the back patio (including play equipment for younger kids). And the location was terrific... DC proper is extremely easy to access by both Metro and car (although be aware that DC's legendary gridlock is not just a metaphor). Plus it's just a 5-minute walk from a great little enclave of restaurants, including Rustico and the Buzz bakery -- which kept us afloat in lattes and fresh muffins throughout our stay.

Above and beyond all that: Steve (the owner) was extremely helpful and gracious throughout the experience -- from initial booking through great recommendations during our stay (his parking suggestion for DC was brilliant) all the way to checkout and beyond, my experience with him was nothing but positive.

To sum it all up: This was a great rental, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Highly recommended for families coming to DC.

PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5

We didn't really know what to expect when we started this. With that said, I'm not sure what could be done to make it better. The entire home is very comfortable, from the beds to the living areas and the kitchen/dining. The house is well stocked with basic kitchen needs, and toiletries. I cannot imagine a stay in a hotel being half as comfortable and relaxing, especially after busy days of sightseeing. There were 3 adults and 2 teenagers in our group; we all had plenty of space to spread out.

Location, location, location! It's a nice walk to the train station, but the bus stop, a convenience store and restaurants are close too. The neighborhood is nice and quiet, and parking is available if you have a vehicle. Steve was a great host, with helpful ideas and advice to make our stay as easy as possible. If we're ever back in DC, this is our first choice!!!

Lovely family home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six adults and a baby enjoyed a six day stay in this lovely home. We were comfortable and especially

appreciated the locale and nearby amenities. An excellent Greek restaurant is two blocks away; a convenience store

is close by; and it was a pleasant walk to King Street and the downtown area of Alexandria.

The home is clean and well maintained and the owner was responsive to our inquiries. We appreciated the crib and high chair that were available. We would recommend the home to our friends and family members.

Our December stay was graced with warm weather.

Fantastic Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 (grandparents, parents, girls 17, 11, and 7) had a wonderful time during our trip to Washington and Alexandria, and loved staying at Captain's Quarters! The property was just as described, and Steve could not have been a more responsive and gracious host.

The "A to Z" Guide was a wonderful resource, and Steve's travel and parking suggestions made travel go so smoothly. Access to the airport and attractions is exceptional, and the reserved parking space a huge perk.

We would stay here again without hesitation!
