|Minimum Stay||5 nights|
Away from the hustle and bustle, you will very quickly settle into ''island mode'' upon your first views of our tropical paradise...Balsam Rock Retreat.
This Caribbean style home has many unique features. The house welcomes you to the upper level via a bridge into the great room, which encompasses the kitchen, dining and living area, the 16 foot wood vaulted ceiling opens to the panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and the sheltered cove of Caribe Bite. Also on this floor you have a bedroom with a king bed and a full bathroom. You'll spend most of your time outside on the wrap around verandas, relaxing in a hammock, swing or just lounging in a chair that overlooks the Blue Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea, The breeze is intoxicating!!! Fill the hummingbird feeder and try and count how many show up for a free meal.
The kitchen is fully equipped with up to date appliances, an island for prep work, breakfast bar, and a great conversation area.
Living room furniture is comfortable and has DirecTV satellite television (including HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, TMC) and a Blu-Ray player with a growing library of movies.
The second floor contains the master bedroom (king size bed) and private bathroom. Two additional bedrooms (one queen and one twin bed in the yellow room in the other room has 1 queen bed and a twin). Step out the door from either the master bedroom or main bathroom onto the wrap around veranda and relax by the infinity edge pool looking out at the blue waters. The washer and dryer are located on this floor. All bedrooms are equipped with air conditioners and the main floor is central air, however with the breezes, you'll rarely need to use the A/C, but it is a great comfort on those few breeze-less days!
Find your way through the gardens to the overlook bench or step down to the private beach and dock where you can swim, kayak, snorkel, or fish. An outside shower is there to wash the saltwater off. There is a large sundeck where you can either sun bath or stargaze, looking up at night, you can't help but see the Milky Way.
Call for a water taxi and Martin might be the one to pick you up at the dock to show you around. Want to go diving? East End Divers will pick you up at the dock too and take you to the most magnificent dive sites. Experience the drop off as never before and try a drift dive. No experience, No problem, they are authorized certified trainers.
Jorge is our watch man, and stays on the property to assist you with things around the home. Berta, Jorge's wife, is our cleaning lady, and for a small price will clean during the week for you.
You will find that Roatan is beautiful, charming and a safe place to visit. Iguana farms, canopy tours, horseback riding, tropical gardens, zoos, beaches, shopping and friendly islanders are some of the things you will fall in love with here in Roatan.
Mike's dream was to own a home on an island on the side of a hill. So when we visited Roatan in 2010 he found his dream come true, the only problem was to convince me.
We spent two weeks in Roatan, and at first I was skeptical, chicken little (me) didn't want to leave the country, (there are strangers out there...lol), what were they like, different customs, different standards then what I am used to.
It turns out that the Islanders are very nice people, willing to help out with all that you need.
My decision to buy our home came when I went on my first scuba trip, as I said before I am chicken little, but with a leap of faith, received instructions and off I went into the most beautiful underworld you could imagine. It was there I said to myself that I wanted more of this.
I came up from my dive and told my husband that I was ready...he said for what, I said ready to buy, I think it was the first time I had shocked him in 30 years.
Since then we try to get there as much as possible and try to make it for at least two weeks when we do.
When I get to Balsam Rock Retreat, I have time to unwind and think about my life, and what changes I need to make to improve it. Each visit renews and rejuvenates me for the next journey in my life.
I am sure when you book and stay with us, you will feel the same way too.
Kay Russo purchased this house in 2010
When we purchased this house it was because it was so comfortable.
Our guests have mentioned to me on numerous occasions how they had such peace staying at Balsam Rock.
Every guest that arrives at our home gets a phone call from me at least once, and everyone of them are so thankful to us for letting them stay there. So much so that when we ask for a review they give Balsam Rock Retreat 5 stars. Mike and I attribute that to; Our care for our guests, first we make sure you are informed about our home and Roatan. We answer all your questions asap. We have Jorge there to greet you at the airport so that you are not overwhelmed. He also lives on the property and is available for any of your needs.
It is our desire for you to experience this peace.
Everything in and outside of the house was great. The caretaker onsite is so friendly and helpful with anything I needed. A perfect sanctuary: stay-away-from-the-world. Keep in mind you do need a car because grocery, restaurant, other than swimming right at the house dock, is at least 20 minutes drive from the house.
My husband and I stayed at Balsam Rock retreat with our 2 adult daughters and their significant others. Kay and Mike were very east to communicate with before and during our trip. We had a lovely time and really enjoyed having the secluded bite to explore by snorkel, kayak and sailboat. There is a beautiful reef at the entrance to the bite, it is at least a 300 yard swim (not 100 as mentioned in some reviews). On most days we swam out to the reef but one windy day we kayaked to the reef, secured the kayaks on the buoy and snorkeled from there. Visibility varies with the weather, but several days it was easily 80 feet, There is a nice wall where the reef drops to about a 60- 80 foot sandy bottom. There is a wreck about 30 yards from the mini beach that is encrusted with coral and inhabited with all kinds of fish and a large moray eel, great place for a night snorkel too. We made several trips down the mangrove tunnel by kayak and on to Jonesville Point . There is a cute place, Paradise Bar & Grill, not far into the mangrove cut. We stopped there a couple of times for a beer, they do have a full menu, but we didn't eat there. Jorge arranged a day boat trip to Pigeon Key for us that included stopping in a little village for lunch afterwards. The boat driver brought us fresh fish for sale, we bought grouper, snapper and lobster tales and enjoyed grilling and cooking them for dinner during the rest of the week. We bought homemade tortillas from Jorge's wife Berta, delicious!! We explored the East End one day (La Sirena Bar, Camp Bay Lodge beach and Paya Beach Restaurant) We also did the West End (Half Moon Bay beach) on a non-cruise ship day. The rest of the week we just stayed at the house and enjoyed all of the water sports and the lovely views from both balconies, the pool and the boat dock. And there is just nothing like starting your day with coffee on the porch swing overlooking the bite while humming birds hover around you. We had a broken shower head but Kay responded immediately and made arrangements through Jorge to have it repaired.
Some hints: 1) Spray with Off (Deet) every time you go outside and get out of the water, keep some on the boat dock too 2) I brought my favorite herbs and a variety of ziplocs for food storage/leftovers. 3) The nearest grocery store is about a 20 minute drive and you have to pay for grocery bags, so if you have room for cloth bags, you might bring them 4) Fill the hummingbird feeder with sugar water and enjoy!!
If you are looking for peace and quiet this is the place for you. We arrived to an immaculate house and beautiful gardens and felt instantly at home. The home is painstakingly maintained by Jorge and his wife Berta, they do their job very well. Jorge was wonderful, attentive and helpful, he answered all of our questions and made sure we had everything we needed. My husband had a great time talking with him about the landscaping and grounds. Jorge, his family and Rambo made our trip extra special!! Rambo was our surrogate dog, what a sweetheart, very alert and protective.
We spent most of our time at the house. We had a great time kayaking around the bight and through the mangrove tunnels One trip included a very exciting lunch at Hole in the Wall, now run by Captain Ed. We were in the kayaks almost everyday. We had a 4wd truck (definitely recommend this) and toured around the island. Pretty much no road signs so it was a bit of a challenge to get to specific areas. We had fun getting lost.
We didn't go out at night, preferring dinner in and a few lunches out. Cals Cantina was by far our favorite, food and views are amazing, Cal himself a friendly guy, excellent cook!! Eldons supermarket is very convenient and has everything you could want. I was surprised and pleased to find a good variety of organic items. Their wine selection is very good. We cooked almost every meal "at home". The kitchen is well equipped, the only items I lacked were wooden spoons (Eldons had them) and a tea kettle, a pan worked fine. One highlight of our trip was our last night, Jorge, Berta, and Rambo came over and Berta showed us how to make corn tortillas. Jorge was our translator and we spent a couple of hours cooking and laughing, very fun!
The things we loved about our trip: feeling like part of a Roatan family, the veranda swings, feeding the hummingbirds and bats, the cute bright green lizards, cooling off in the pool, watching the tourist water taxis going by.
Beautiful house, wonderful trip.
We had an amazing time in Roatan and highly recommend the island as well as this property! I've rented homes in the Caribbean for the past six years and this is by far the most well taken care of and most well equipped. The kitchen has everything you'll ever need including a margarita maker! The views are stunning. The a/c works perfectly well and the t.v. is great if you want to relax and catch up on some U.S. news during your stay. Jorge, his loyal dog and lovely family are what really make it an incredible experience. He is around if/when you need him and doesn't disturb you if you don't. His wife, Birtha, makes amazing tortillas and his children are very helpful if you need an extra hand loading or unloading groceries/luggage, etc. The pool is quite small but clean so if you are looking for a lap pool this isn't for you. Swimming and snorkeling is possible off of the dock but it isn't the best on the island. This is the place for you if you are looking for peace and quiet and amazing views. You should definitely rent a car. And the bugs were fine--no big deal! We are going back next year without a doubt!
The property was everything as advertised and everything we hoped for and more. Excellent! Wonderful grounds with gorgeous plants and flowers. A truly great person as house watchman and grounds-keeper; he was very helpful;
We had an excellent, fun week there with our family. Beds were comfortable. Everything was great. Will go again to same place.
This was our first trip to Roatan and it was AMAZING. The house was perfect for an extended family visit, the location was peaceful and beautiful. If you want an awesome vacation away from the tourist rat race without giving up any amenities this is the place for you. This home features lots of amazing views of the bay and sunsets, provides several private spaces on property for reading or relaxing and provides all the appropriate amenities (snorkeling equipment, kayaks, pool, etc). The watchmen Jorge and his family are very kind and always available to help as needed. The owners Kay and Mike were always responsive and sincerely interested in making sure we enjoyed our stay and everything was perfect.
Favorite memories include: Great breezes and sunsets, relaxing on porch swings, kayaking around bay and into mangroves, awesome seafood offered by local fisherman, great diving, beautiful flowers/foliage around property. authenticity and trusting nature of the Roatan people.
We'd definitely go back - one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations we've had as a family.
Our home is located in the very quiet east end of Roatan. The home is direct ocean front, with a private beach, pool, and dock on the Blue Lagoon, in the area called Caribe Point Bite, at the very private end of the road high on a bluff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Blue Lagoon, and the mountains and jungles all around. The closest villages are Jonesville Point and the town of Jonesville. We are approximately 15 scenic miles east of Roatan International Airport.
