About Matthew Patrick

Matthew is a director and a photographer. He thoroughly enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.

Matthew Patrick purchased this house in 1992

Why Matthew Patrick chose California Desert

When I took a trip out to Joshua Tree Monument (now called Joshua Tree National Park), I immediately fell in love with it's incredible, unusual beauty. It wasn't far from Los Angeles, and yet felt like another world.

I wanted to have land as much like the Park as I could. So I purchased a 2.5 acre piece in 1992. I camped on it often, and it was great. My favorite thing was to sleep outside under the stars, and it still is.

I liked the privacy and didn't want neighbors, so I quietly purchased the parcels around me, assembling a hundred acres.

Personally the size and scope of it still blows me away. To walk the perimeter of the property takes a day.

Strangely, or not so strangely, people tell me they become connected to the rocks in a primitive way. It helps put life in perspective and is good for body and soul. I feel that way too. JTP has been a great retreat for me and my friends. Now, in 2012 I open it to you.

Every picture was taken on the property... guaranteed. You will take amazing photos too.

What makes this house unique

Joshua Tree is a spiritual and vacation mecca. This is a unique location nestled into the border of the park. It is very private and beautiful. You have the Park to explore, or you can just sit in the yard or amongst the numerous boulders on the property and be part of it. I promise you will not be disappointed. If you're a rock climber, you already know that this is one of the most famous and amazing places to climb in the world.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thanks so much Matthew. Your beautiful slice of paradise is also my favorite place which is why I keep coming back so long as you'll have me. I'm no artist, just a stress filled guy who needs his "me" time. JTP is the perfect place. I find it calming and spiritual and it literally transforms me if only for a few days. I have checked out your other websites and the blogs and so on. Very fascinating! Those funny videos were great. What an amazing talent you have. Great work! And not to mention academy nominated for your short film.... PRICELESS!

Thanks so much for everything Matthew... I greatly appreciate you being so kind.

This is truly a one of a kind property!! So rare in crowded souther California to have this much free space to roam! Endless rock formations and fantastic cactus and wildflowers everywhere. Mathew also has lots of metal bed frames around the property to star gaze from or cozy up and read a book. So quirky and cool! The house was really comfortable. Both beds had great mattresses! It also has really well placed windows that open up with screens so you can get a great cross flow of air throughout. So nice in the desert! The house is stocked really well and has really interesting and fun games! Some great books and DVD's too. We had such a nice time and only wish we could have stayed longer. We didn't get to meet Mathew but you can tell so much about someone from the feel of their house. This property and house have a great feel to them. Thank you so much Mathew for sharing your magical place.

Also, one last great feature. You feel SO remote and private. But we had to run into town twice to get things we forgot at he health food store and it was SO CLOSE! That is the best! Total privacy and still close to town. Count yourself lucky if you get to stay here!

This property was AMAZING!! House was perfect for my parents, 2 kids and myself. We all had plenty of room and everything we could possibly need for our stay. House was spotless. Owner provided mats and sleeping bags for sleeping on the outdoor beds and even bath supplies and towels, plenty of board games and DVDs for the kiddos too. Owner responds quickly to email. Scenery was breathtaking! We hiked, we relaxed, slept under the stars and simply had a wonderful weekend. It's obvious Matthew takes pride in the rental. It feels like you are completely isolated from the outside world, it was our own oasis. We didn't leave the property at all. I really can't begin to put into words just how much we all enjoyed our stay... from grandparents, parents and kids, there really was something for everyone. Would repeat this trip in a heartbeat! Thank you Matthew for a wonderful Spring Break getaway!

Fantastic

My husband and school aged kids had an amazing week at Joshua Tree Paradise. The solar powered house had everything we needed, was impeccably clean and comfortably furnished. The windows of the house face east and west, perfectly situated to watch the sun rise and set.

The property is nothing short of spectacular with stunning views of the snow covered mountain peaks in the west which came into focus every morning as the sun rose behind the boulders in the east. We had so much fun scrambling on the rocks and exploring the untouched desert landscape that was in spring bloom. We saw at least 4 types of wildflowers that I didn't see elsewhere in JTree Natl Park. We saw and heard coyotes, many Gambel quails and jackrabbits. Although it was quite cold at night, we were able to lay on the beds placed outside the house and watch the plethora of stars overhead and saw 2 shooting stars. The mornings were possibly my favorite--having coffee on one of the benches facing east and seeing the sun come through the rocks behind the house or on one facing west and seeing San Jancinto come into view and the lavender hues across the horizon.

I would recommend this house to anyone and absolutely hope to get back there soon.

awesome

Our group loved this property. We feel like we barely scratched the surface of places to explore on the property, from countless boulders to caves and trails. The outdoor beds are great for stargazing, and the house has a nice open layout that's good for group dinners (but could definitely use sharper knives). All of us said we would return, and hope to make it happen sooner rather than later!
