We are both music educators that live close by on the mainland and love to spend as much time as we can at our place on the island.
The Owner purchased this house in 2002
This property has been in our family since 1967. In 2001 we decided to replace the original 400 square foot cottage and build a new family home. Since then we have been renting it as a vacation home that we also enjoy ourselves. One of the things we've found while renting our home is that people who visit our property want to return and repeat the experience. We are excited to be able to offer our place once again to families wanting a unique vacation home close to nature, but also close to Victoria, Sidney, and Brentwood Bay.
Our place is located in a small, quiet community that lets you feel like you are away from it all, yet you are a short 30 minutes away from Downtown Victoria. You are also 15 minutes away from the villages of Brentwood Bay and Saanichton. There are wonderful wineries, restaurants and gardens nearby, plus the added bonus of being on Saanich Peninsula where there are fresh and organic food stands and stalls throughout the area during the growing season. This place that our family has always called 'the Cottage' has been a wonderful summer and winter location to share family gatherings. While the adults are visiting on the main level or outside patio, the kids can be up in the loft playing video games , air hockey etc. Visitors also enjoy the water (some wetsuits provided) swimming, snorkelling and beachcombing. Every evening we have 'Sunset Ceremony' where we toast the sun as it sets behind the Malahat hills across the inlet. The cottage is a great place to retreat and reconnect with nature where you will likely see eagles, herons, seals, otters, and deer. A walk down the road will lead you to a regional park with more hiking trails, waterfalls and beaches to enjoy.
The driveway Wow! The house Wow! The scenery Wow! We enjoyed ourselves here, we wish we had more time just to stay and relax more. The fireworks at Butchart Gardens Wow! Lots of wild life walking around was great for the girls - a deer came right down to see us while sitting outside. Our last day a family of seals came close and were putting on a show. We will be back and will be bringing more family and friends with us... Thanks for letting us stay in your beautiful home.
This property was just as described on the website. It was very clean and everything we needed was provided for us. The owners were very easy to communicate with and promptly replied to any questions we had. It is a beautiful home in a peaceful setting right on the water. We really enjoyed our stay at this home and would love to return for another visit in the future.
If there ever were a perfect house in a perfect location, it is this one. We had the privilege of staying in this beautiful retreat for three nights (wish it were much much longer)! Our family of four traveled to this magical place with my parents. It slept six of us very comfortably with a whole bedroom to spare.
After making your way down the steep driveway (take it very slow), the house is entered into on the floor of the three bedrooms. From there you can decide to walk upstairs to the upper room with a tv, a couch, a desk and chair, two beds (a single bed and a double bed) and a door to the lovely upper deck. This area of the house is very high up with beautiful panoramic views of the sea below. It is positively stunning. My children slept up there because this hideaway room had a tree house like feel, and they enjoyed it very much.
On the entry level are three bedrooms- a light green master with a comfy queen bed, walk in closet, amazing views and attached bathroom with an old fashioned soaker tub, a lilac room with a queen and stunning views, and a smaller yellow room with two oversized single beds (perfect for kids). The lilac and yellow bedrooms share a nice full hallway bathroom.
The downstairs (and the most amazing part of the house) is absolutely stunning. There is a bathroom, dining area and living room area to the left of the stairs, and to the right is the fabulous kitchen and the most amazing family room sitting area with huge windows and absolutely beautiful views of the surrounding trees and sea below. This area is by far the best part of the house, and our jaws dropped when we first saw it. Absolutely magical!
From the amazing indoor sitting area, you can go outside to a very nice deck under the trees with several chairs and a table. And from there you can walk down a lovely pathway of stairs to the sea below. There are a lot of stairs but a few places along the way you can stop and sit. If you keep walking, you eventually make your way down to the calm ocean below. My children LOVED the outside and were down by the ocean most of the time scoping out small and large crabs, fish and purple, orange and brown sea stars.
This is a very tall Victorian style home literally built into a cliff. One could easily spend a week/two just relaxing at this fantastic place. I pride myself on finding it as it was an absolute gold mine as far as what the house offers for the price. If you go to Victoria, do NOT miss staying at this fabulous house!
Beautiful location. All the reviews below are confirmed. We would definitely rent it again when we need a place for 4-6 in Victoria. Kitchen was well-equipped and made cooking easy and a pleasure.
One of the special features of this home is its location - you drive up and around a mountain on a winding road that eventually runs along the ocean, about 15 minutes from Brentwood Bay. Keep an eye out for deer, bikers, other cars, and--unfortunately--police radar traps. The house is on the water below the road, accessed by a steep driveway (as are most houses along Mark Lane), and near some beautiful hiking trails along the ocean.
The first thing you'll notice upon entering the house is its bright and cheerful quality, with large windows looking out on the water on all 3 levels. The downstairs includes the kitchen and living area facing west and with a high ceiling that keeps the house bright even on darker days. The furniture is clean and comfortable throughout, and the house is wonderfully stocked with everything you need for either a short or longer stay. We particularly liked the tasteful and understated elegance of the decorating scheme, which adds to the overall cheerful quality. We would prefer a king-size bed to the master bedroom and a larger flat-screen TV in the living room with HD instead of SD reception.
Overall, the house has a vibe that says the owners really care about the place and want their guests to have a pleasant stay without complications. It is about 20 minutes from shopping and restaurants, about 30 from Victoria to the south and Sydney to the north. Victoria is a stunningly beautiful place to visit, easy to get around, lush and green and flowering almost everywhere and the ocean all around you. Check out Victoria's amazing bakeries and seafood restaurants as you explore the city and the peninsula. We rent ocean-side properties quite frequently, and it's without reservation that we can recommend "The Cottage" as one of the best homes and locations we've ever discovered. Three cheers to the owners for the care and consideration in offering their home to us!
This home is a gem. It's about 30 minutes from Victoria but you feel like you're much further away. Our first day we saw six boats but about double that many kayakers. For the power boats, we have usually seen that many in about ten minutes at other waterfront locations we've rented. In the week we were there, we only saw one other car on the road in front of the house while we were driving.
The house is very well maintained and the kitchen is stocked with many dry food items beyond what you normally find. We brought two kayaks and launched them from the bottom steps. About ten minutes south is a provincial park which made for some great sightseeing from the water. Lots of wildlife in the area, especially deer.
There were lots of things to do nearby. We toured Butchart Gardens on a Saturday in August and stayed to enjoy their fireworks show. We also toured a winery and cider maker, went to the Sidney street fair and spent a day in Victoria.
This was a hard place to leave. I hope we can return soon.
This house was like a home away from home. We fell in love with the house so much, we almost did not go out sightseeing while visiting Victoria. The view was spectacular, the house well appointed, clean, comfortable and had everything we needed or wished for. It is obvious that the owners have taken great care to make anyone's stay at the house hassle free. The only thing which would have made it better, would have been to stay longer. The next time I am back in Victoria, I will want to stay at this house again. It was by far the best accommodation I have ever stayed in. Thanks so much, we hope to see this house again.
