House, 4 Bedrooms + Den, 2.25 Baths, (Sleeps 8-12)
You will not forget a weekend spent at Windbeam House, 6 miles from charming Red Wing, Minnesota. Floor-to-ceiling living room windows offer spectacular views of not only Goose Lake but also the bluffs of historic Red Wing across the river. This tree-lined panorama provides breath-taking year round scenery, including miles of the Mississippi's famous fall foliage and ever changing waters. Because the house sits on the edge of the bluff above the lake, it is a perfect spot to sit and relax, watching a wide array of birds and animals, including eagles and flocks of migratory swans and pelicans in season, not to mention trains passing silently along the edge of the lake below.
This four bedroom rambler sleeps 12 with one full bath and two half baths, a family room, full kitchen and dining room. Only one hour from Minneapolis/St.Paul or Rochester, Minnesota, this home offers a retreat for groups from 2-12. And while it is hard not to be mesmerized by the view, it is also within a few miles of shopping, hiking, fishing, golf, snowshoeing and skiing. Not to mention an extensive arts community, restaurants, antique dealers, the Sheldon Theater and Treasure Island Casino.
This peaceful house is pet friendly and comfortably furnished in southwestern style. The master bedroom is equipped with a queen size bed and includes a private half bath. The other three bedrooms have double beds. Downstairs, the family room offers two full futon sofas.
Four generations of our family have come together in this home and we look forward to sharing it with you.

About Trudi Schaefer
We live on a small farm just 6 miles from Windbeam House. We purchased our farm in 1976 when the farmhouse was about to be demolished. Much of our time since then has been spent renovating the house and outbuildings and creating the many gardens that surround Windbeam Farm.
Trudi Schaefer purchased this House in 2000
Why Trudi Schaefer chose Trenton
We inherited this property from Paul's parents in 2010. Immediately, we saw the potential for furnishing it as a guest house for the many friends and families who visit the Red Wing area. Womens Weekends Away and Fishing tournaments are two of the groups who find Windbeam House the perfect place to stay.
What makes this House unique
Practically every person that comes through the front door of Windbeam House is awed by the lovely view of the Mississippi River and the bluffs of Red Wing that greet them through the wall-to-wall windows of the living room. People tell us they sit in that room for many peaceful hours, watching the river, the birds but especially the eagles who perch in the trees below the house.

If I could give this more stars, I absolutely would. Absolutely a 10/10 - I would HIGHLY recommend!
This was hands-down the loveliest home - share I have ever had the pleasure of staying in! Trudi's hospitality, flexibility & attention to detail is absolutely impeccable. The home itself is absolutely beautiful, with a SPECTACULAR view over the bluffs - this alone would be enough to make it a memorable stay, but with the addition of all the little details like brochures for everything you could think of to do in Red Wing, two pairs of binoculars and a bird watching guide book, a multi-page binder full of all the information you would need in order to answer literally any question you might have about your stay, and fully-stocked EVERYTHING (seriously, you need extra blankets? check. forgot to bring shampoo or a blow dryer? check. need any kind of batteries for anything? check. want to have a fire? there's plenty of wood for the outside fire pit as well as dura-logs for the indoor fireplace... I could go on!), we were lacking in absolutely nothing. On top of all of this, Trudi always replied promptly to all communications and was very accommodating with our request to check out a bit later than the listed time.
I cannot stress enough how much we enjoyed our stay here!!! we will definitely be coming back again :)
i don't know what to do here. I can barely fit my head through the doorway it has swelled up so much! What a charming couple, what a lovely review. As the season heats up (i.e., if Spring ever arrives) I know that Windbeam House will get busier, the laundry will start to overwhelm me and I'll have to work even harder to make sure the everyone feels like this couple. I'll just have to remember to take a breath, enjoy all the new guests. . . and remember this review.
Tons of space, amazing views, thoughtful and experienced hosts!
We stayed at Trudi and Paul's place for the lake Pepin 100 Mile garage sale. Their place is easy to find, and Trudi was a great communicator thought the booking and arrival process.
Their home is an expansive rambler, with huge windows and awesome views out over the river, railroad, and into Red Wing. You can see eagles, woodpeckers, and all kinds of wildlife from the living room, and their binoculars and books are fun to check out. The train is so much quieter here than when we've stated in Pepin.
The house has a bit of a grandparents' house vibe, but cool interesting grandparents. They clearly enjoy opening up their home and hosting, and have shared lots about who they are in how they've decorated the place. They have things well-labeled throughout the house, and anything you may have forgotten they probably have tucked away somewhere, including a flashlight by the front door. They totally respected our space, were available for any needs, and are clearly experienced hosts.
We checked out the drive-in broasted chicken place up the street a piece, and everyone enjoyed it- especially the shakes! We also checked out Chef Shack and they happened to have a guest chef and we had an amazing french meal! Smiling Pelican has been our favorite bakery in the area, and Nelson cheese factory is well worth the trek if you haven't been there before.
Thanks for everything Trudi and Paul! I look forward to coming back!
This house has lots of room. Has a beautiful view of the lake from the living room and two of the bedrooms. Could use some updating.
So glad you enjoyed the house and the view. So many people comment on the view.
Every year we chose some aspect of the house to update. Last year we remodeled part of the kitchen and put in a new gas stove and oven. The year before that we upgraded the "all electric" service by switching as much as we could to natural gas. There is always something that needs improvement and we do what we can.
A little slice of Heaven
Usually I have to recharge my kindle everyday. Since leaving our home in Mn. and leaving WI.; just once before leaving for MI. Had a wonderful time with son, his wife and grandkids for two days. This place is so relaxing and overlooking the Mississippi that didn't even put tv on for the two days we stayed there. If you ever get the chance, rent the Windbeam home from vrbo. The owners are wonderful people too.
Thanks so much for the "slice of Heaven" comment. That was sweet. We were so glad that you chose to stay at Windbeam House for your celebration and so sorry that we didn't get to come down and visit with you. Those things happen. Please do come again.
Windbeam is a wonderful place to relax!
This was a lovely home with a incredible view of the river valley. Just a short hop to Red Wing!
Very well maintained and clean. A great place to relax.
Thanks so much. I'm glad you had a good time, considering how cold it has been.
Also, thanks for the heads up on the hot water temp. We got a plumber over there right away and he took care of it. The house is in great shape but every once in a while. . . well houses just do that. Thanks and please do come and stay again.
