Red Wing House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Den, 2.25 Baths, (Sleeps 8-12)

You will not forget a weekend spent at Windbeam House, 6 miles from charming Red Wing, Minnesota. Floor-to-ceiling living room windows offer spectacular views of not only Goose Lake but also the bluffs of historic Red Wing across the river. This tree-lined panorama provides breath-taking year round scenery, including miles of the Mississippi's famous fall foliage and ever changing waters. Because the house sits on the edge of the bluff above the lake, it is a perfect spot to sit and relax, watching a wide array of birds and animals, including eagles and flocks of migratory swans and pelicans in season, not to mention trains passing silently along the edge of the lake below.

This four bedroom rambler sleeps 12 with one full bath and two half baths, a family room, full kitchen and dining room. Only one hour from Minneapolis/St.Paul or Rochester, Minnesota, this home offers a retreat for groups from 2-12. And while it is hard not to be mesmerized by the view, it is also within a few miles of shopping, hiking, fishing, golf, snowshoeing and skiing. Not to mention an extensive arts community, restaurants, antique dealers, the Sheldon Theater and Treasure Island Casino.

This peaceful house is pet friendly and comfortably furnished in southwestern style. The master bedroom is equipped with a queen size bed and includes a private half bath. The other three bedrooms have double beds. Downstairs, the family room offers two full futon sofas.

Four generations of our family have come together in this home and we look forward to sharing it with you.

About Trudi Schaefer

We live on a small farm just 6 miles from Windbeam House. We purchased our farm in 1976 when the farmhouse was about to be demolished. Much of our time since then has been spent renovating the house and outbuildings and creating the many gardens that surround Windbeam Farm.

Trudi Schaefer purchased this house in 2000

Why Trudi Schaefer chose Minnesota

We inherited this property from Paul's parents in 2010. Immediately, we saw the potential for furnishing it as a guest house for the many friends and families who visit the Red Wing area. Womens Weekends Away and Fishing tournaments are two of the groups who find Windbeam House the perfect place to stay.

What makes this house unique

Practically every person that comes through the front door of Windbeam House is awed by the lovely view of the Mississippi River and the bluffs of Red Wing that greet them through the wall-to-wall windows of the living room. People tell us they sit in that room for many peaceful hours, watching the river, the birds but especially the eagles who perch in the trees below the house.

Diamond in the Bluff!

  • 5 of 5

The Windbeam House was perfect for our girls getaway! Everything was pretty seamless. Instructions were clear, owners were friendly, and the house was accurate to its description. Excellent and scenic back yard, which we took advantage of as much as we could. We loved hearing the trains go by and just being able to overlook the bluffs! Beautiful views! It helped that we were there over a gorgous weekend too. We brought our bikes and were able to keep them in the spacious garage. We only got to bike over into Red Wing during the day, but I could tell that many biking adventures could be had in the area. I'd go back again and again. Thank you, Trudi, for sharing your gem of a house!

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you enjoyed the house and the view. So many people comment on the view from the house, it really is a gem. There are many biking adventures in the area so please, do come again Carrie and take advantage of our return guest discount. Maybe you could consider coming this winter for a cross country skiing trip. Lots of ops there too.

We came for a girl’s weekend and had a great time. The home is very roomy and has big windows in the living room with a wonderful view. We loved sitting in the rocking chairs watching all the birds, squirrels and bunnies at the feeders and the Eagles sitting in the big trees across the river. We did notice a musty, closed up smell when entering the house and one of the beds was very squeaky. I did let the owner know about those things. Red Wing is just minutes away. We had fun visiting the Pottery Museum and shops. We ate lunch at the Bayside Tap & Steakhouse, which was good. Overall it's a nice location with a wonderful view.

Owner's Response: Sally I'm glad you all had a good time. Thanx for mentioning the bed. As I told you I will look into what's going on there. I can't do much about a house smelling closed up when its been closed up. I do my best to open it up whenever I am there. I'll see if there is more that I can do. Please do come again.

1.) The house was very roomy.

2.) Some of the rooms had a musty smell in the upstairs.

3.) The main bathroom upstairs smelled like urine around the toilet. We sprayed Lysol contantly.

4.) The master bathroom was nice just needed blinds.

5.) The bathroom downstairs was nice.

6,) You need more water pressure in the showers.

7.) Loved the view of the Lake.

8.) The first bedroom to the right was nice but needs a new mattress.

9.) The bedroom across the hall had squeaky bed.

10.) The oven had a loose temp knob.

11.) Trudie got the problem with the cable taken care of the next day. Whoever had been there before us mixed the chords up.

12.) I wiped down when I arrived in certain areas that were not cleaned as well as they should have been,

13.) Close to many restaurants and shopping in Red Wing and the small towns around.

14,} Great location.

Girls Weekend

  • 4 of 5

Lovely location. Comfortable. We loved the decor, spaciousness, hominess, cleanliness, and the View!! Enjoyed the birds at the bird feeders while having morning coffee.

Two minor drawbacks: frequency of passing trains, and no hot water in lower level.

A great time was had by all!!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. Glad you all had a good time at Windbeam House. I saw that there were both pelicans and a swan on the lake when I came down. There isn't a whole lot I can do about the trains. Most people that stay love the trains -- what can I say. I know there is hot water in the downstairs bathroom today but I sent a plumber down anyway just to be sure things were working right. Thanks for the heads up. There are some things I wouldn't know about unless a guest brought it to my attention but I do try. Please come visit again. Return guests get a discount if they remind me that they have been here before. Trudi

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year having our girls weekend at the Windbeam and it was wonderful again. A huge thanks to Trudi and Paul for opening their home to us! The house is very large, easy to find, well stocked. Trudi and Paul have definitely put a lot of thought into what makes the house work for their renters. Also, Trudi is very easy to communicate with and responds quickly. The back yard and the view are fabulous! I highly recommend the Windbeam house!

Windbeam exceeded our expectations with a full kitchen, spacious living space & beautiful lake view.

  • 5 of 5

We hope to return for another stay at Windbeam as it provided the perfect space for our Texas family. We were only 20 minutes from the wedding farm venue for our son. The breathtaking views greeted us each morning with coffee & we were able to cook gumbo for the wedding in the fully equipped kitchen. The soothing sound of occasional trains below and the surprising sight of soaring eagles were a delight. Thank youbfor sharing this wonderful home!

Owner's Response: We love it when people get together at Windbeam House for weddings, reunions and family get-togethers. I always picture them gathered around the big dining room table with conversations passing back and forth from the open kitchen. But then all sitting in the living room enjoying the view and the critters isn't so bad either. From day #1 we have enjoyed sharing it all with all the wonderful people who come to Windbeam House. Do come back again!
