About Karen Heywood

This has been our family vacation house since the 1960's, lovingly maintained and enjoyed by three generations. We are three sisters (two in MA one in NYC) jointly owning and operating the property as an all-season rental, using it ourselves with our families whenever we can. We'll be sharing great memories, providing family fun year-round and looking forward to many adventures still to come.

Karen Heywood purchased this chalet in 1964

Why Karen Heywood chose White Mountains

This is the best spot in the North Conway/Carroll County area with easy access to all the action for which it is known but without any sense of traffic or crowds. Family members can go separate ways and meet up at the chalet later, or just stay home and enjoy great natural beauty right outside the door walking in the woods and along the brook. The chalet is uniquely located at the end of a dead-end unpaved road. You can enjoy your pine-scented mornings on a sun-dappled deck listening only to the trees and the babbling brook, and yet at night there are fabulous restaurants, bars, movies and plenty of music and theatre events to entertain you. Serious thrill-seekers will be challenged with the climbing, riding, skiing, mountain-biking and kayaking in the area, but leaf-peepers, readers, golfers, shoppers and birders are equally happy in the same town. And it's only 2 1/2 hours from Boston by car, so weekends are an easy escape.

What makes this chalet unique

The living room, dining room and kitchen are upstairs on an open floor plan with a wood beamed cathedral ceiling high overhead and sliding glass windows all around. There is a wood-burning fireplace in the living room with built-in couches and retro Danish Modern chairs to settle in and enjoy the fire, TV , DVD or wireless internet. A king bedroom and full bath are also upstairs and a spiral staircase leads down to the family room, two additional bedrooms (one queen, one with bunk beds and a twin) and another full bath. There is lots of room for everyone, storage is ample, and the house is well-equipped for entertaining.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We just got back from a great week in NH. The house was perfect. Great spot, everything we needed. I think the dogs had the best week of their lives so far. Just want to tell you that we love how well kept the house is and how clean everyhthing was. Perfect amount of stuff there too. Not cluttered. I was a little worried it was our first time away with our 1 year old but everyhthing was great. Thanks!

Conveniently located

  • 5 of 5

Lovely little cabin that met our needs. Conveniently located in North Conway yet the feel was secluded. Enchanting brook behind the house was a bit difficult to get to due to the steepness of the terrain behind the cabin. Just need to be watchful of small children. Everyone enjoyed their stay. Accommodations were charming and very comfortable. Would like to have been able to stay longer!

We found the cottage to be very dated.

  • 3 of 5

The place was very clean. The kitchen had everything that we needed. The pots & pans were in every cupboard. Someone needs to reorganize the cupboards and remove a lot of unnecessary stuff. The place was roomy but the furniture is low which makes it difficult to get up and very uncomfortable.

When we arrived the place smelt very musty. I realize that it is in the forest surrounded by trees but it was necessary to wash all our clothes including our sweaters and jackets when we arrived home. The place is in a great location and close to everything.

Unfortunately it has not been upgraded in a very long time.

Wow! We cannot say enough positive things about our little "staycation" at this property. First off yes it looks dated but there are so many other awesome features that at the end of the trip you won't think of this place as a little older but instead really charming. Karen the owner...aMaZiNg ! She was great sent us all the info in plenty of time and was available instantly. She was super friendly and accommodating. The house has two huge floors with two full bathrooms four entrances exits and a full kitchen with pots pans utensils plates cups everything you could need. Nice little charcoal grill on the back porch. And the very very BEST part of the whole place. It's private and the brook in the back yard omg! my nephew and dog had a freaking blast. even the adults had fun in it. Tons of little trails to hike on and play in the water. It was so great. We will most definatley be returning and making it a tradition for our families. What a great way to spend our vacation. Great price, comfy place with plenty of beds, parking, close enough to town you could walk there. Don't hesitate book this little gem now you won't regret it I promise!

Perfect For Families

  • 5 of 5

This is our families second time staying and once again it was perfect for our young kids. The boys ages 3 and 6 had a great time playing in the brook as did our dog, there are even trails on the other side of the brook which I went to try out with the dog but we were interrupted by a bear about 3 minutes from the house!!! The house is really close to town but completely secluded and very quiet. Also close to Storyland for the kids and The Saco River which was a refreshing break as it was unseasonably warm when we visited. The kitchen is well equipped and everything was spotless. Everyone slept comfortably (especially with the windows open and the sound of the brook), there was even a bed rail that we could attach to the bottom bunk bed for our 3 year old so we didn't have to bring our own. We did not want to leave and are already thinking about planning another trip in the Winter!

Cute, cozy rental close to everything!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here over Labor Day weekend with my husband, our dog and another couple and couldn't be more pleased! Karen was quick to reply and handled everything perfectly.

As others have mentioned, it is a quick walk to town. We were a little unsure about the proximity to town, based on the photos provided, but were VERY happy with this location. It feels private, but really is less than a 10 minute walk to town.

The place was super clean and felt a lot more spacious than the stated square footage as well as stocked with all of the necessities. We didn't actually do any cooking over the weekend, but there was a nice charcoal grill on the back deck and the kitchen was fully stocked with anything you could possibly need to make a meal. The outside felt very rustic and smelled amazing from all of the pine trees! The highlight for our dog was definitely the stream running behind the property, which provided her with endless fun "chasing" rocks. This stream was also awesome to listen to waking up in the morning!

On our 1st night in town we met Ken, who runs the No. Conway Country Club. The guys golfed there on Saturday and said it was one of the best they've ever golfed! Also, highly recommend Peaches for brunch and May Kelly's & Delaney's for dinner.

This is a great property in a fun town with lots to offer. Can't wait to return!
