Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6) private pool. Bikes included to explore.

The Keaau area is the jumping off point to see the Kilauea Lava Flow. Our home is the perfect spot to relax after a day of sightseeing. Our beautiful 3 bedroom 2 bath home has every thing you need in your home away from home. Granite counters and teak cabinets and an open layout make it a retreat to rest after a long day sightseeing. The backyard is surrounded by an Ohia forest, creating a place of serenity and privacy while cooling off in the in- ground pool. In the evening light up a fire in the outdoor fire pit and enjoy roasting marshmallows while gazing at the stars.

The home is located just 2 blocks from the ocean, where you can walk along the cliffs and trails. In the winter whale watching on the cliffs is a popular local past time.

The nearby historic towns of Kea`au and Pahoa both have restaurants, grocery stores and farmers markets. The snorkeling areas in Kapoho, the hot ponds and the lava viewing area in Kalapana are all with in 20-30 minutes from the home.

The open layout and design of the home makes it accessible for wheel chair guests.”

. The master suite opens out in onto the lanai surrounding the pool. It has a private bathroom and shower. The Kingsize bed has a Vera Wang memory Foam Mattress. You''ll want to lounge in bed all day. The two additional bedrooms share a full bath, one bedroom has a queensize bed and the other a full size bed. Plenty of room to share with friends and family. This is a nonsmoking home.

Just 15-20 minutes away from the Kalapana Lava Viewing area.

This home is NOT to be rented for parties, large gatherings, family reunions etc.. There is a maximum of 6 people including children allowed in the home. The home is perfect for romantic getaways, family vacations.

Please note Hawaii is in the tropics. We have bugs, geckos, and the Big Island has coqui frogs whose mating call can be heard at night.

About Maureen Gapp

We have lived on the Big island for over 25 years and raised our family here.

We live just down the street and absolutely love this beautiful secluded area. Kola Point is an amazing place. Close enough to all the places to see but, far enough away to enjoy the serenity of the Big Island

Maureen Gapp purchased this house in 2010

Why Maureen Gapp chose Hawaii

The privacy is important as well as being in the 'sun belt'. This lot was so unique as it backed up to a beautiful forest of Ohia. The natural wall prevents any neighbors from being behind us, so the privacy is amazing.

What makes this house unique

Peace and tranquility. My favorite thing to do is to light a campfire and watch the stars. The area is mostly vacation homes and private homes so it's great to be able to walk or bike around without any traffic.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It is always such a great pleasure when renting a vacation resort to find that it exceeds expectations. We had a wonderful time on the Hilo side of the island and your home is part of our enjoyment. Nice, clean, very spacious, warm pool, we have fond memories of our trip to the Big Island thanks to the comfort of your home. Regards, Eric & family

Pleasant, private, and peaceful.

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed here twice and hope to do so again - though it fills up early so we have missed a couple of opportunities. It is a lovely home with a delightful quiet and private back yard. The pool is nice too, though in February it's still a bit cool for frequent use. I love to sit on the lanai with a cup of coffee watching the birds exploring the back yard and occasionally dipping in the pool - they don't seem to have the same aversion to cold water that i do ; ^ ). The owner was particularly accommodating this time in helping with arrangements for us to celebrate a special occasion during the visit.

Owner's Response: Aloha, Glad you enjoyed your stay. Bird watching in the backyard seems to be a very popular activity these days. Not sure what brings in all the varieties, they are beautiful to watch. Don't forget we have instant booking now, so the dates do go quick, especially over the winter. Hope to see you both again. Aloha Maureen

Awesome house

  • 4 of 5

Only reason we knocked a star off is because the interpretation of the 6 person max occupancy rule. I didn't realize until after we booked that it meant no more than 6 people on the property at any time (6 people residing at a 3 bedroom house is pretty standard). We moved our planned lunch BBQ with my parents and a few family friends to another location. Other than that hiccup the place was really nice and well taken care of. I was born and raised in this neighborhood and the house and property exceeded my expectations. Awesome place.

Owner's Response: Aloha, Glad the home exceeded your expectations. Sorry for the misunderstanding or the maximum occupancy of 6 people. I take great pride in providing a well maintained home for my guests. You were still able to entertain guests on Saturday, just not 12 people. Twelve people is a party in my opinion, which is considerable wear and tear on the home. The description of the home does say 6 people maximum, not suitable for parties. I will write a more clear description in the future. Thanks for your comments. Aloha Maureen

Fantastic family home!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 6 day stay - taking lots of time to explore the area. The house is well equipped with a great BBQ and lanai area. The kids loved the pool and large yard. A very private home with nothing but the sound of birds and frogs to lull you to sleep. Maureen was very attentive- checking in with a phone call when we arrived and the day before our departure. This is by far the nicest places I've rented off VRBO and wouldn't hesitate to come back or recommend it to others!

Beyond Expectations

  • 5 of 5

Quiet, clean, comfortable with every possible need provided for. Maureen was very responsive to our queries and it was lovely to encounter a really well stocked kitchen ( a complete spice rack!) and every possible sundry including beach and play stuff for kids. The King bed mattress in the master suite was foam which was the only minor disappointment. The other queen mattresses were fine. The pool was lovely , clean and of perfect depth and temperature....what a luxurious treat to ourselves.

Private, beautiful home

  • 4 of 5

We quite enjoyed our first visit to the very beautiful and diverse Hawaii Island via this lovely, very private, well maintained and equipped home in this quiet neighbourhood (during that day anyway - the frogs and neighbor's dog had something to say most evenings but didn't annoy us horribly).

Maureen was sweet, accommodating and left some good tips of where to go in the area. The house and Maureen rate 5-5. 👍𣐼􏏼

Booking where we did we knew we'd have to drive to get anywhere, but didn't feel we had to drive too far - not even to escape the rain on days it was raining heavily in the area.

We took advantage of the bikes that were at the house and enjoyed going for leisurely bike rides most mornings, finding it an enjoyable way to see the sights at a slower pace, with some decent paved road and grids to ride on with little to no concern of traffic as we meandered.

Only 4.5 stars though it was very nice, is because in all honesty, we would've enjoyed the stay more for a couple of reasons. First, we would've liked to have had the option of being able to control the pool temperature - we didn't actually use it - it was cold for us. We are possibly just wimps. Really, it would've been more enjoyable if the frogs didn't go on as long and loud as they did (nothing could be done about that though, obviously, unless you don't stay in the rainforest part of this Island). Lastly, we were looking forward to the king sized bed but found that it was way too soft, as our backs hurt after a couple of nights on it. We slept on the queen in the other room which was fine, but not ideal. That's how it was for us. Wouldn't have worked if we have had our adults kids along.

Thanks so much, Maureen and know we would still recommend your place in a heartbeat!

Owner's Response: Aloha, glad you enjoyed your stay. We try hard to accommodate everyone and the various needs of our guests. Most guest rave about the king size bed as it is a specialized memory foam mattress. We also have the firm queen is the guest room to appeal to everyone. The pool is not heated, so I am not sure what you meant about controlling the temperature. Only the weather does that. The temperature of the pool ranges from 78-86 in the winter. It was a pleasure meeting you while biking around. It is a beautiful area to explore especially now with all the whales going by. Hope to see you both again in the future. Aloha Maureen

Hawaiian Paradise Found

  • 5 of 5

This house beat our expectations by miles. The pictures do not do the house full justice. We were so pleasantly surprised how comforting and clean the house was, almost like our own home, not a 'rental property.' Maureen and her husband have thought of every detail to make the stay a family-bonding experience - it is full of boardgames, good books, pool toys and cooking/baking utensils.

The location is very convenient for exploring the great east coast of the Big Island. We are so glad we didn't only stay in Kona. Close to Hilo, Kea'au, Kalapana (great night market and beginning point to lava hike), Pahoa (and its incredible beaches, tide pools, warm springs) and Kilauea Volcano National Park!

We even spent a full day simply lounging by the pool and grilling, such a luxury in this area, instead of dragging our two young kids everywhere hiking and exploring (which we did every other day). The house is very private. It feels like you are in your own botanical paradise with no one else around but the birds and frogs. Perfect!!
