Classic Ocean Side Home on Tybee Island

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible bed in LR, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 14-16)

For forty years, our family has enjoyed this classic family beach house, literally steps (about 250) from the Atlantic ocean. Built in the early 1900's, the house has been completely updated to today’s standards, yet maintains the feel and detail of the classic beach cottage our parents and grandparents may have enjoyed when they took the train from Savannah to Tybee Island “back in the day.”

The focal point of our home is its wrap around screened porch which winds around three sides of the house. You can sit on the swing and view the ocean in the distance or lie in the hammock and rock in the breeze. There are six different seating areas, to accommodate most any activity, breakfast to tea to lunch to cocktails to dinner; reading, to cards, to games to just hanging out and breathing in the salt air or enjoying an afternoon thunder storm. Some guests even move a mattress out to the porch to fall asleep to the sounds of the crashing surf.

Inside, upstairs, you’ll find three bedrooms (one king and two queens) and two full baths. Downstairs are two bedrooms (two double beds in one room & two twin trundles - can sleep four- in the other). Also downstairs are two “classic Tybee” shower rooms (our favorites). Please note that as with other vintage Tybee homes, the downstairs rooms are accessed via a staircase on the screened porch (which can be seen in the 'porch entry' photo below). While these rooms may be a bit too separated from Mom and Dad for small children, many adults and teens enjoy the extra privacy the lower level rooms provide.

The large, airy upstairs living area has a foldout couch for extra sleeping space. The kitchen is fully equipped to facilitate an intimate dinner or a shrimp feast for a crowd.

Over the years our house has hosted singles, couples, families, and multiple families on holiday. We will be happy to help you create your own dream vacation on Tybee Island.

To make a reservation or for more information please contact our friends at Tybee Beach Vacation Rentals. Keith Gay and his crew have been managing our house since we began renting about fifteen years ago and will treat you like family.

We loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

As stated in a previous review, when I first pulled into the driveway I wasn't greatly impressed. HOWEVER, after entering the porch and checking out the entire home we warmed up to the character of the home. The porch is a great asset. The home is very comfortable and offers many areas of privacy AND great rooms for where everyone can fellowship together. The kitchen was very adequate and had most utensils needed for cooking for a large group. I would definitely recommend the home to others. Another great asset is the MANAGEMENT COMPANY. They were very responsive and KNOWLEDGEABLE of the home. I have stayed in 4 and 5 star resorts before, but would choose this home over them just because of the warmth and character of the home. If you really want a feel of Tybee Island, why not stay in a home that is CLASSIC TYBEE?

Diamond in the rough - really loved the place!

  • 4 of 5

I have to say, that I'm surprised that there are not more reviews for this house. Because of this I wanted to make sure that I write one to give a fair shake.

While this house is not a gorgeous, state of the art, 21st century model beach home; I can honestly say that this "unique" house is extremely comfortable to stay in while visiting Tybee Island. While we only had 6 adults(3 couples)and a 18month old baby staying the week, there was plenty of room for privacy from one another, if needed. Besides the fact of the 5 bedrooms, the huge rap-around porch and the living room were great places to escape and relax after bouncing around from the beach, hanging down town, biking or touring Savannah.

I love the fact you can easily walk(and a very short walk at that)to the beach on the wonderful boardwalk from the steet and over the dunes. An easy walk to the downtown area is also a great convenience, as you will find out - you will not pretty much *NOT* park anywhere without paying(The property drive has room for 4 vehicles).

When you first walk into the house your first impression is(well mine was)that this is a little rough. But after a few hours, the house warms up to you and really feels like home - where you can relax and kick your feet up. The basement -yes, seems a bit strange at first(see post #1)but when you enter the bedroom area, you are quick to forget that you are in the basement. Incidentally, the couple with the baby -chose to stay in the basement as it was more convenient and felt that the child would be less bothersome to the rest of us. Personally, I think that they just wanted to be far away from me- LOL! Oh -the showers in the basement are definitely not fancy -but they are practical and you get clean.

We chose to stay in and cook most meals as it does help the wallet - and this Kitchen while not huge, is very adequate with the full size stove and refrigerator. The counter space may get a bit tight but we managed nicely.

I also must give props to the Management Company -avail. 7 days a week(normal office hours)are so very pleasant to talk to and can easily answer a lot of questions over the phone. Example - Internet WIFI login trouble(I think they have a background in IT Networking - lol) I couldn't log in and come to find out that the WIFI login was factory defaulted (can't believe I couldn't figure that one out - oh, that's right - my mind was on vacation) :o)

Running out of characters - surely, give this one a shot!!

Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

Where do I start!

This house was absolutely amazing! I rented this house or my Bachelorette weekend with 10 of my closest friends. We came from all over and some of the girls had never been to the beach so this house was perfect! It was definitely the epitome of a beach cottage with ship-lap on the walls and hardwood floors. The set-up was a little interesting with half of the bedrooms downstairs and you had the enter through a staircase outside on the porch but we weren't there to spend time sleeping. The wrap around porch was massive with multiple ceiling fans to keep you cool and we spent most of out nights there. The locations couldn't have been better as we were only 2 houses off of the beach and only a few blocks from the "downtown" Tybee area. The Rental company was also a pleasure to work with as they were polite and answered the multiple questions I had about the island as I had never been there myself. I hope that I can visit Tybee and stay here again in the near future!

Mixed Bag

Having a love of older homes, the upstairs is quaint old Tybee with wavy glass windows and beadboard everywhere. The kitchen is adequate though it would be nice to have some plastic cups instead of everything being glass. The wrap around porch is wonderful!! The location perfect as you are steps to the boardwalk to the beach.

The downstairs has a different feel. Part of the foundation has been closed in to form two bedrooms but the area around them is open to the elements. Lattice between the bricks is all that separates you from the outside. The plumbing is definitely old school with adaptations and add ons thru the years.

Owner's Response: The basement area is enclosed by a combination of brick pillars and lattice, as can be seen in the principle photo on our listing. Built in 1900, this is one of the oldest houses on Tybee Island and back then, houses were built off the ground as a precaution against flooding and to provide space for parking, showers, boats, and storage. At some point, I’m guessing late 50’s-early 60’s, a portion of our ground level was turned into two bedrooms as was common practice back then. These rooms are located more or less in the center of the downstairs area, leaving open space on three sides to the exterior lattice walls. The enclosed shower rooms, lavatory, and washer/dryer room are located along the fourth wall. When walking around the open downstairs area, the temperature is going to be pretty much the same as outside. However, the bedrooms are connected to the central air conditioning/heating system to maintain a comfortable environment no matter the outside temperature. When my parents purchased this house in 1977, I believe they were first attracted by the wrap around porch and secondly, by the classic, historic nature of the house. For 38 years we have been maintaining and updating our 115 year old house, bringing it up to 21st century standards. We have: remodeled one upstairs bathroom and turned an upstairs closet into a wonderful shower room; added six ceiling fans inside and two on the porch; installed a state of the art heating and cooling system; replaced the downstairs cement and brick pillars which support the house; added insulation; replaced flooring; replaced appliances and furniture; and used more gallons of paint than I can count. About 15 years ago, we began renting out the house to help pay for its upkeep, insurance, and taxes. My family works closely with Tybee Beach Vacation Rentals, who manages our house. I think they would call us hands-on owners. We delight in spending time in the house and in knowing that visitors to Tybee can also enjoy it. Rick Traub, house owner
