Hard-working country man, spending all day wrestling ( mostly lovingly ) with Nature to bring this amazing property into function and fruition. I was born and raised in the area and I have remained here on purpose, I love this area. I have traveled the world and recognize what is special here. I am willing to share this and consider it an act of service to do so with people who understand and respect what this is and what I do.
Richard W. purchased this cottage in 2005
Big Sur still has magic afoot, Real Magic, Nature has not been crushed. In fact on this property Nature is complete and full, it is still Robust. I have the only place in a 2800 acre canyon, so Quiet and Peaceful are very very real here. But it’s a dynamic quietude, the constant soft sounds of Nature are the soundtrack. It’s quiet enough that you can hear the small voices inside that often get drowned out by the hullaballoo of that busy life out there.
The whole world maybe used to be this way, but it’s not any more. This property is Old-School, and that means you are self-responsible here; there’s no-one to hold your hand for security, but neither is there anyone to intrude and annoy you. Thoughts and conversation can flow to their natural conclusions. Your phone will NOT ring, laughing… Clean, quiet and safe from the madness out there; you can let your defenses down, unfold, let your blossom open. When I say there is Magic afoot, it’s not hyperbole, it’s still real here.
I’d recommend this epic adventure for anyone who wants to have a fun experience like traveling abroad right here in the United States. We met Richard at the base of his expansive 54 acre property which overlooks the Eselan Institute and the mighty Pacific Ocean. He picked us, our dog, luggage, and cooler up in his Suzuki and we headed out for a short jeep ride stretching less than a mile. The view on the side of this jeep ride was more expansive than any view I have seen of Big Sur. It was more spacious and wonderous than the views from Nepenthe or Eselan. After a jeep ride which lasted only a couple of minutes we settled into a 1961 restored camping trailer parked near an amazing bath house. The view of the pristine canyon we were in and ocean view from there was breathtaking.
I am a stay at home mom of two little ones needing a small break from the daily grind. I needed to get away from television, phones, and civilization in general. I wanted to be off the grid. Richard's place was absolutely perfect. I felt very comfortable and safe there. Now, if you're looking for a place that has room service and pay-per-view, this isn't for you. It's rustic and simple and everyone should try it. I spent two nights and wish I could have stayed longer. The bed must be made from Hogwarts students, because it was magical. The time spent hiking down to and sitting along his creek was rejuvenating. Richard himself was kind, providing, and a wonderful conversationalist if you care for a chat. While you are there, throw a stick for Zoe, hike up to the top of the property, walk your way to Julia Pfeiffer Burns, and definitely, hike down to his creek. Take a bath every night in the rustic tub at the bathhouse (yes, the inside is a little cracked and it is even better for it) and shower surrounded by the splendid outdoors of Big Sur.
I thought long and hard about whether or not I should leave this review. Why?? Because I wanted to keep this gem all to myself. However, that wouldn't be fair to the owner and host who has done a remarkable job creating one of the best hideaways my husband and I have ever experienced. There are very few places in this world where you can actually just be with each other in nature with complete privacy. Richard has done an amazing job with this place. All our needs were met and the accomodations were steller. We woke to birds singing, whales breaching and the creek below. We hiked, lay in the sun, fed the chickens, drank wine with a backdrop of one of the best views I have seen since our last Kauai trip. The best was the double person tub that overlooked the ocean and the trees. We took bubble baths with our wine every night. My only complaint was that we eventually had to say goodbye and hit the asphalt jungle far too soon. Richard was incredibly kind. He brought us fresh eggs, apricots and even beer. His hiking trails are extremely well marked and the wading pools and mini waterfalls were incredible. It was simply one of the most memorable vacations we have ever had. We highly recommend this paradise and will go back again and again.
My fiancee and i were looking for a place to escape the city over Valentine's Day weekend and stumbled upon Richard's oasis. We stayed three nights and by the time our trip was over we were fantasizing about leaving the rat race and finding our own piece of paradise where we could permanently reconnect to what is important. That day may still be quite a way off, but our long weekend on Richard's property made a lasting impression on us. We've both traveled a lot both in the U.S. and around the world, and we've simply never been anywhere so beautiful, so relaxing and so romantic. It was the perfect thing for us leading up to our wedding, allowing us to get away from all of the digital clutter and focus on our relationship. You have complete privacy there. Days were spent cooking delicious meals, drinking wine, exploring the vast property, peering through the binoculars and relaxing on the lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Nights were spent with more wine, scrabble, star gazing, and enjoying the deepest sleep imaginable. To say that the trailer and bathhouse are well-stocked is an understatement. Bring your favorite food, libations and some clothes but you'll need very little else so save yourself the hassle. Richard is a great guy and you can see his thoughtfulness played out throughout the property. Thank you Richard for the amazing stay - we will be back!
My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights and we would have stayed much longer if we could. It felt so good to unplug from all the electronic gadgets and just spend time to read, go on hikes in Richard's amazing property (the view from the top of Richard's property is just simply breathtaking), cook in the well equipped kitchen, watch the beautiful sunset every evening, soak in the tub with the view of the ocean right in front of you, see whales, dolphins and sea lions splashing in the ocean with the binoculars that Richard provides.....We could not remember the last time we slept as well as we did during or time there. We spent half a day exploring the sights of Big Sur but everything pales in comparison to what was just right in front of our door steps. We will definitely be back to this little piece of Paradise.
This precarious paradise was the tangible rendering of a vision in my head. You will find, by the end of this, that it is indeed yours too. Start by visualizing the most covert dirt road leading off into the mountains from the rush and speediness of US1. 100 yards later you find your cars final resting place, a flat open area enough for three parking spots. From there the journey that I made on foot many of times starts on the first day with Richard and one of the few enduring early 90's pickups he manages to get up what you will soon see is a true off-roading feat. Crawling at a snails pace around a few switchbacks and gaining nearly 1500 feet in elevation you will look out over the cliff outside your door to the view that will cost you 10 times as much at Post Ranch Inn or Ventana to witness. Over the last vertical hump the old dirt road heads just as quickly down into a ravine of giant redwoods and bay trees. Here you will arrive at the small slice of level ground overlooking the main ravine which will be your home for as long as you can have it. A wooden screen is your vale to the remainder of Richards endlessly interesting manor making the elegant trailer and bath house yours completely. You will never long for another bathroom again after a few uses in this glass palace above the world. For those who realized you left your reading glasses in the car when you were desperately looking up if "GI" was a word during scrabble then expect a 13 minute walk down and 20 min walk back...depending on age and physical fitness. The amenities are nothing short of normal creature comforts. Contrary to the stigma attached to "off the grid", here, you'd never notice. The environment you are in is privately owned and therefore completely baron of other hikers and sightseers. If you can, and I think you must, take time away from sunbathing and napping to traverse the hill side and ravine you will be rewarded with untouched wilderness and silence so great my ears struggled to find activity. If you are lucky enough to meet and spend time with Zooey you will be endlessly amused with this pups character and personality. When the fateful day comes you must leave this place you will load your wheelbarrow with luggage, roll it to the vessel you rode in on, hop on and hang out with Richard for one last time. Me and my wife will never forget our time there and could not have ended up with a better spot to enjoy our little honeymoon. A thanks to Richard for that.
"Escape your gravity field."
Richard, the owner of this pretty-close-to-perfect property, was talking about letting go from the pull of your everyday world, with its aggravations, its routines, its things that drag you down.
I was on my first trip to Richard's kingdom, and the line resonated with me. I had spent the morning being frustrated over car problems, and I would be arriving late -- in a rental car.
But after we spoke, I realized it didn't matter how I got here. It was being here that mattered.
It's a place that makes you exhale. And then breathe, deep. And exhale again.
I had been to Big Sur -- one of my favorite places on earth -- a dozen or so times before, staying at various rental cabins or camping in its parks. But once I discovered Richard's vintage Pathfinder trailer, I knew it was the only place I'd ever stay in Big Sur again.
I've been coming for three years now. The first year I stayed only two nights -- not quite long enough to escape my gravity field. The next two years I stayed for four nights, and next year I may make it five.
It has become my yearly unplugged sabbatical. I don't even leave the property much, preferring to immerse myself in this grand nature and tune in to myself again.
If you're a woman and unnerved at the idea of spending time here alone, I'm proof that it can be a wonderful, and safe, escape from your gravity field.
Crazy gorgeous here, peaceful and quiet and Natural in a way the world doesn't have much any more. Try just relaxing, catch up on your sleep and let your voice settle back into your chest. Be creative, focus on your partner if you've got one; no distractions here... peaceful peaceful peaceful Natural peaceful...

FAILURE TO ARRIVE AT LEAST ONE HOUR PRIOR TO SUNSET WILL RESULT IN FORFEIT OF THAT NIGHTS STAY. It's dark here at night, really dark.
