Highlands NC, Designer Luxury Cabin, View, 2 Bdr + 2 Bath, Private, Peaceful

Bedrooms 2
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

A true luxury getaway for you nestled in the Smoky Mountains (elevation 4100). This dream cabin is just 4.6 miles from the heart of Highlands and 6.6 miles from Cashiers. Designer/Owner is the great granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Wright and shares his love of organic materials and comfortable furnishings. Pets welcome by application and pet fee weekly is required.

Super convenient stairless entry to ALL main level living including master and guest bedroom (only stairs go to loft and upstairs bedroom and bath, private) make this accessible. With a bridge entry over the hillside, there is ample room to sit and relax both on the covered deck and at the back with view to the mountains, it doesn't get any better than this. There is even a small private balcony deck off the master bedroom.

1800 square feet of relaxing cabin! Gorgeous hardwood floors in matte finish counterbalance the handsome stack stone fireplace. Built in natural cherry cabinets create great storage in both the great room and open kitchen.

Sliding glass doors open wide to breathtaking wooded mountain views and a deck designed for hanging out and enjoying the quiet or entertaining friends and family and grilling out (propane grill included)

A stereo system with CD player is provided, as is the convenience of a 42'flat screen with DVD player so you won't miss a movie or a game.

Three private baths and bedrooms, one with a king bed, two with queen beds, ideal for a get together of friends or family. Extra sleeping on a generously sized daybed in the loft can be made up on request. First class linens and fluffy bath towels just like a four star hotel. Lots of convenient closet storage so you can move right in.

Full sized kitchen with granite counter tops and breakfast bar for those cozy mornings. Coffee maker, French press and grinder all provided along with a collection of cooking equipment, utensils, pots and pans. Oh and if you hate to cook or don't want to be bothered, rest assured there are palate pleasers by the boatload in Highlands and Cashiers both. You'll find a treasure trove of menus awaiting your perusal in my dining guide scrapbook.

A handy stackable washer and dryer accommodates any laundry needs. Dry cleaning is available in Highlands or in Cashiers.

About Melissa Galt

I'll bet you love peace, quiet and cooler temps like I do! As an interior designer I wanted a place that would be a true escape from city life so I created my retreat. I included inspiration from my great grandfather, America's most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. You'll see his sketches framed in the master bedroom.

My Mom (his grand daughter) is the late Oscar winning actress, Anne Baxter. I've included some of my favorite movie posters with her in the guest bedroom and bath.

It seemed auspicious that she'd done a movie Cimarron and my builder's company was named Cimarron!

My godmother, the late eight time Academy award winning costume designer, Edith Head, always said 'you can be anyone you want, if you just dress the part.' Well I take that to heart when designing interiors and like to dress my homes in the true character of the area.

This house was my full time residence for two years. I am now back in Atlanta and come up as often as I can, but decided I wanted to share it with others.

Highlands is a truly magical place and once you try it you won't want to leave. I didn't and wound up living there!

Today, I am doing design work for clients throughout the Southeast and often enjoy working on tight deadlines. My favorite projects are those in 90 days that transform a house into your home and haven. I believe in decorating to live, not living to decorate. The environment that I create for my clients informs, supports, and nurtures their lives. It is an honor and privilege to be able to make such an impact.

You'll also notice copies of my books (yes there is one in the gift basket for you to keep) as I also write and speak internationally on life by design, how to have it all.

Okay, if you are curious, I'm not married, and no kids. Family is all scattered so I am fortunate to call my friends my family.

I travel often for business and genuinely look forward to my mountain escape.

Melissa Galt purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Melissa Galt chose Highlands

Highlands is much cooler, quieter and more peaceful than my place in Atlanta. It has over 20 restaurants from 5 star white table cloth to Subway.

The boutiques are unique and range from casual weekend wear to black tie attire, antiques and heirlooms at the two auction houses to designer finds at the many home furnishings shops.

There are nonstop arts festivals, garden shows, musical events, theatre, and more during the season.

The great outdoors is just steps beyond your own front door. Waterfalls and gorges are within a 10 minute drive, hiking with breathtaking mountain views as far as the eye can see are within 5 minutes.

Sunset rock is the perfect place to picnic or enjoy a glass of wine as the sun dips behind the Smokies.

I'm a big fan of the holidays in the mountains from Thanksgiving and the glorious fall foliage to Christmas and the Norman Rockwell like setting that Highlands provides, especially when dusted with a few snow flakes (2010 was the first white Christmas in recorded history. It was beautiful!)

Oh and there is great medical care if you ever need it with the hospital within 2 miles.

The DOT does a fantastic job of clearning roads in both summer and winter storms. And my place does get snow ploughed if needed in the winter.

What makes this cabin unique

You'll find incredible quiet staying at my place. My builder is green friendly and added a fresh air intake that keeps the house well ventilated 24/7.

In the Spring and Summer you won't need the A/C (though you do have it) because you can open all the doors and windows and enjoy fresh mountain breezes.

The stack stone fireplace has gas logs so there is no muss or fuss and no clean up. You get all the ambiance and heat of a real fire without the hassle.

With a TV in the great room and one in the master bedroom, you can keep up with the latest movies and sports.

WiFi is available because I know you might want to check in with work or let your Facebook friends know what a great time you are having.

Cell phone service can be questionable. Verizon works fine, others are spotty.

You've got a treasure trove of menus from all local restaurants at your fingertips in the Highlands Dining Guide Scrapbook I created.

It is my hope that your stay is the first of many and you will truly come to love Highlands as much as I do.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A lovely end to a lovely week. We had wanted to spend the week hiking and that we found in abundance. Thank you so much for having the guidebooks, we appreciated them so. To all visiting after us, take an evening to enjoy a sunset from Sunset Rock in Highlands. It will be spectacular time well spend.

Beautiful home, quiet, close to Highlands, very relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This is a truly beautiful home with many quality features and touches. Comfortable and lovely furniture, great kitchen with all the comforts of home and more. The home is close to Highlands and so many other attractions in the area. Great shopping and restaurants, all I was looking for plus a very quiet neighborhood. I was delighted with the lightning bugs dancing in the evening light and there was a good view of the night sky - also a great place for a neighborhood stroll. It was a magical place to spend each evening. The grounds and porches were filled with flowers and lovely plants. It was a memorable week and I will return. There is so much attention to detail and comfort; I was delighted.

Beautiful Stay in the Mountains

  • 5 of 5

We come to the area each leaf season to reward ourselves for having survived another New Orleans summer! We try to stay in lovely homes each time, but Melissa's Mountain Home is a step up from everything else. The area is gorgeous, the home is beyond lovely, and Melissa could not be more accommodating and helpful. She is available to you for anything you need at the touch of a phone. There are several homes around this one. However, they were unoccupied at the time we were there so we had all the privacy we wanted. Highly recommended. Thanks, Melissa!
