Estate Carolina Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Wonderful location for a family on a budget or for those who used to stay at Maho! Gorgeous views of Coral Bay. Cute little cottage (this is not a luxury villa) sleeps up to 6: two on queen size bed in bedroom, two in king size bed in the loft, and two on the pullout futon. Updated kitchen is fully stocked with all the necessary utensils, plates, cups, and cooking supplies.

This cottage sits at the bottom of the lot and thus has many steps (82) down to the unit. This cottage is probably not for the elderly.

The cottage has air conditioning throughout, with the exception of the screened in porch and screened-in bathroom - what a view from the bathroom! The bathroom was recently renovated with all new tile and fixtures.

Relax on the new deck and porch while sipping cocktails looking at the boats anchored just below. Plenty of nearby restaurants and beaches to keep you busy all day long!

For those who have been to St John before you can rest easy that the road to the house is a concrete straightaway with no switchbacks!

Why John Hilbert chose Coral Bay

We just love the peace and quiet of Coral Bay and the view from the cottage is spectacular! We bought this particular house because the drive to the house is up a simple straight concrete road with no switchbacks and no issues

What makes this cottage unique

The porch and view for this price is undoubtably the best feature of Blue Wrasse Cottage but the accessibility is also wonderful. Many if not most rentals on St John require a SUV to get to them and have harrowing drives around steep turns and in many cases unpaved roads. Not at Blue Wrasse Cottage - simple easy drive straight up a concrete road!

What a view!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th trip to the island and we try to be as budget conscious as possible when we travel. Previously, we had stayed at Cinnamon Bay cabins and at Concordia, which are both great for different reasons. The Blue Wrasse checked all our boxes for quality, comfort and affordability!

We traveled with our 2 adult children and the space worked out well. Our daughter stayed in the Loft and our son stayed on the futon. The downstairs bedroom is private, having a separate entrance from the upstairs area. The kitchen is well equipped and has everything you would need to cook a gourmet meal (we did). The grill on the deck is great and did I mention the view? Awesome!

I was a little concerned with heat, given the time of the year, but the ac worked great! It was a pleasure working with John and the on-island support staff. Excellent communication!

Yes, there are a lot of stairs, so don't be surprised when you get there. Remember, you're on island time, so take your time and enjoy the beautiful the flowers and tropical experience as you climb your way to the parking area. We are already looking forward to a return trip! Thank you John!

Private, adorable slice of paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Blue Wrasse helped make our trip to St John the best vacation we have ever had. This adorable cottage is on the more private side of the island, with easy access by jeep to any and all hiking areas and beaches. If you are looking for a place away from the run of the mill busy tourist spots, where you can feel like you belong to the island and the people, this is your spot. The property is well maintained, well stocked, very clean and best of all are the local managers, Tom & Jackie. They called us the day before to give us a quick run down on all things useful based on our preferences and needs. Lots of info re: taking our jeep on the ferry from St Thomas, where to shop for food, wine, vegetarian options... Really great managers!! The cottage is very comfy for 2-4 people, both levels are air conditioned. There is a GREAT grocery store just at the bottom of the hill called the Dolphin Market. We will DEFINITELY be returning!!

Paradise Found

My husband and I stayed at Blue Wrasse from May 6-13. We absolutely adored this little villa and really appreciate the responsiveness of the owner and on-island property managers. We loved the privacy this villa affords, along with the stunning view of Coral Bay. We enjoyed watching Captain Pete mooring 'Angel's Rest' for the evening. We also watched the sailing charters come in for the evening and on one night heard the crew members singing from the deck of the villa. At Blue Wrasse, you are surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation and fall asleep to the sound of tree frogs every night! We enjoyed happy hour on the deck and grilled fresh snapper we purchased from the fishermen below the house. We had fun preparing some of our meals together at the villa, as the kitchen has nice cookware, grill, and everything you need. We miss the outdoor shower and our daily workout on the stairs. We took only take "Navy showers" to conserve the precious water. If you are lucky enough to stay a month here and forgetful like we were and made multiple daily trips on the stairs, I promise you will leave with a fantastic backside. :) LOL. The beach towels, chairs, and cooler were such nice little amenities. There is also snorkel gear but we brought our own. I don't think you can find all this for the price anywhere else on St. John. Our only negative experience was leaving. We will definitely be back! Favorite restaurants: Shipwreck Landing and Caribbean Oasis. Favorite snorkels: Waterlemon, Salt Pond, Francis, and Maho. Bring plenty of reef safe sunscreen for St. John. The tropical strength sun is like nothing in the states.

Blue Wrasse Villa

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cottage and found it very comfortable. A great place to come back to after

a day of hiking and snorkeling. It had everything we wanted including a spectacular view

of Coral Bay. It was conveniently located not too far from a great market called the Dolphin

Market which had items we often find at Whole Foods and a variety of restaurants. A perfect

base for the active vacationer. Just great! What more can I say. It would be great if the Coral

Bay side of the island could get a gas station some day :)

Cute, cozy cottage in ideal location for easy access to beaches and hiking trails.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 enjoyed our stay in this cozy cottage. The cottage was well maintained and clean. Probably the cleanest VRBO we have ever rented. Initially we felt a bit cramped, but after we made a couple of furniture rearrangements there was plenty of floor space to move.

The only caution I would mention is to be prepared to bump your head if you are tall. My husband (6' 7") and son (6' 3") bumped their heads numerous times due to the loft and the ceiling downstairs not being quite high enough for them. We do realize that our family is unusually tall, so for the majority of vacationers this would not be an issue. Just something that we thought may be helpful for those who may be of similar height.

We really enjoyed the peacefulness of the area, but yet the easy access to many beaches (via automobile). The deck was perfect for us all to enjoy both breakfasts and suppers. It truly was a great place to promote family togetherness and rejuvenate our family's bond.

Lots to love but not for everyone.....

  • 5 of 5

I can not fault the Blue Wrasse for living up to its billing, it is an extremely cute little cottage and well priced for St. John. That said, there are a few things potential renters should know. Let's start with the good. Great location, only about a half mile up Bordeaux Mountain Road (steep but paved) which results in fantastic views of Coral Bay Harbor. It has lovely porches and useful touches like plenty of outlets, multiple fans (in addition to AC) and lots of hooks for hanging wet towels.. The kitchen was fairly well stocked, and I love that they allowed renters to leave behind spices, condiments, coffee etc.. so that others could choose to use them. The beach chairs were the best we've ever had at a rental. We loved the outdoor bathroom, which is right off the main level living space. We lost hot water on the second day, but once the problem was resolved, the water was plenty hot.

Even the 88 stairs from the driveway weren't much of an issue for us. They were sturdy with decent handrails, and lighting along the path. I tended to take a rest on the way up, just for a few moments, and totally enjoyed the delicious smells coming from the tropical plantings along the sides of the pathway. My only real issue has to do with the location of the bathroom in relation to the sleeping quarters, and the sleeping quarters themselves.

If you are someone who has to get up at night to use the bathroom, this cottage will require a compromise. Because the main bedroom (a queen bed that was just OK in terms of comfort) is downstairs, through a separate entrance, using the bathroom requires going outside, climbing the stairs crossing the (small) deck and entering the upstairs unit, making lots of noise for other sleepers in the process. You could choose to sleep on the mattress in the loft above the main level, but most people outside their 20's would not feel comfortable descending a wall ladder (a bit precarious even when wide awake) in the dark while groggy from sleep. I decided to sleep on the futon in the main room. Not ideal. I know they make futons capable of providing a decent night's sleep for a full grown person, but this was not one of them. I ended up making a pallet on the floor with the "mattress", which was more like a thick sleeping bag and the comforters provided.

The unit is small, we filled it up with 3 adults. We did love most things about it though, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it otherwise.
