The Schooner Coast House is located along the shore of Lake Michigan known as the Schooner Coast that runs from Manitowoc to Sturgeon Bay. 100 years ago, this coast was dominated by the beautiful ships known as “schooners.” One of those ships was known as the Rouse Simmons ( also known as the fabled “Christmas Tree Ship” ) whose captain Herman Schuenemann was born nearby in Algoma. Today Algoma is famous for its sport fishing.
With easy access to Door County and Green Bay, you have a lot of activities to choose from all year long. Nearby attractions include Von Stiehl Winery; Lambeau Field is approximately a 30 minute drive and the shrine of “Our Lady of Good Help” one of 12 sites worldwide and the only one in the United States recognized by the Vatican as a site visited by The Virgin Mary. (approximately 14 miles down K)
The house has 100 feet of private pebble beach with beautiful views of Lake Michigan. You can enjoy a quiet evening on the spacious 16 x 48 foot deck.

We stayed for one week on our family vacation (we try to visit a different state each year). We found Wisconsin and the Lake Michigan area to be absolutely beautiful! The house was very well equipped for our family of 6. The water pressure in the downstairs bathroom was so low that we all showered upstairs. The mayflies were a huge issue the first couple of days ( we covered the upstairs window because they were getting in through there and covering the beds and walls and this helped a lot). The stairs are very steep and we had to keep the doors closed and inaccessible to our 2 year old.
The beach area was very small and clearing some of the tree growth on the shore would make this a much better place to sit and watch the sunset! The water was freezing (even in late June/early July) and only our teens were brave enough to get in the lake! Other than these minor quirks, we enjoyed the scenery and visiting this area. It was very peaceful and we enjoyed our trip to Lake Michigan and the relaxed atmosphere with our kids.
We had seven people in our family stay here. There was plenty of room for everyone. The kitchen came equipped with everything we needed. We spent evenings and some afternoons around the fire pit which is right next to the water edge. The backyard was huge with enough room for us to play all kinds of outdoor games. The house is not air conditioned but it was so cool from the lake the house stayed very cool and comfortable.
Our son's fished every day and found several different spots to fish at. Our daughter and her boyfriend loved the "I'll be in the Garage Bar" in Algoma. There is plenty to do within a short drive or a person could spend a relaxing vacation by the water.
The people we rented from were very helpful and responded back to any questions I had in a short amount of time.
You can't beat the location on the Lakeshore! Enjoyed the Sunrises over Lake Michigan. We also enjoyed the large backyard, playing horseshoes during the day, and sitting by the Fire Pit at night. The house was very comfortable. It's also an easy, scenic drive into Green Bay for the football games. The townspeople of Algoma were very friendly and outgoing to us Southern Californians. By all means sample the Wisconsin Style Food at the local restaurants, especially Skaliwags!
Nice, clean rental for a group of six women in their fifties. The house was the perfect size and had what we needed for a great weekend. We traveled to Green Bay to tour Lambeau Field and the Hall of Fame and spent a day in Door County. The location made it easy to get to both. We bought groceries at the Piggly Wiggly which was less than a mile away and also ate at Red Pub and Grill which was super good.
We had rented this house in the past and we were disappointed with the deterioration and lack of care evident with this visit/stay.The pictures on VRBO website show an area on the beach with chairs/fire ring, this area really didn't exist anymore. The chairs were tumbled down the shoreline and buried deeply into rock. The fire ring was also thrown among debris. The trees and bushes around the beach area were too over grown to allow 2 people to sit there comfortably. My husband spent a morning working on the area and had to dig the chairs out of the debris/rock with a shovel, trim back bushes just so we could sit by the water and have the fire at night. When we first arrived there was a lady in the driveway. We thought maybe she was still cleaning so we went up to the park for 20-30 minutes to give her time to finish. When we returned she was still standing in the driveway. She was the cleaning lady and said she had been waiting for us.She reported the house was a mess/disaster when she got there and that there were still dirty dishes in the dishwasher and bedding in the washer, so really the house was not ready. However, she assured us it was clean, that the floors were mopped and beds changed, and since it was just me and my husband it should be okay.We found the main bedroom with pillows thrown on the floor, dust bunnies, and the linen did not smell fresh/clean - in fact it looked like it had been slept in.We stripped the bed and washed the linen just so we knew we weren't sleeping in a dirty bed. There was no dishwasher soap available in the house (I assume that is why she didn't do the dishes??) but there was a huge bottle of dish-washing liquid, so I took all the dirty dishes out of the washer that were left by the previous renters and the housekeeper and washed them all by hand in the sink. That could have been done by the housekeeper instead of standing in the driveway waiting to tell us all that was not done. Not a great start to a vacation - doing the work of the housekeeper/owner/landscaper before we could enjoy the property. Also the living room had huge amounts of dust/dirt under the davenport that was visible when you walked in the room, so I swept that up. The water smelled like sulfur, but there was a sign on the fridge that said it was safe. The house smelled a bit musty. The weather was hot and the house is not air-conditioned, so that was uncomfortable. Loved this house first time we stayed but this time was bad. I would not recommend.
My husband and I stayed a week at this home. We were joined by our children and granddaughter for part of the stay. The house was very roomy and accommodated all of us very comfortably. The location was great, as we took day trips to Green Bay and door county. Algoma is a beautiful area and would recommend a stay at this home. Only downsides, home is near highway, so with windows open there is road traffic noise. Fire pit area is rustic also.
