Missing the serenity of the gardens

  • 5 of 5

The apartment has such a great energy about it. Everything was very comfortable and cozy and I really felt at home there, in fact I miss it after I left. The bed is extremely comfortable and at night you can look through the skylight as the sounds of the crickets lull you to sleep. The star of the property is the yard/gardens. Eda did such a fabulous job with the garden that I took every moment I could to gaze out into the courtyard and enjoy the serenity and calmness it made me feel. And be sure you sit out at night with the twinkle lights in the garden as it makes you feel like you are in another world of wonderland. The location is great - it's on a really pretty tree-lined street and is within walking distance to 4th Street shops and restaurants. Eda, herself, is also the star of the property and she is such a delightful host and will do everything to make your stay a pleasant one.

Very convenient, quiet and cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a 10 day stay while our house underwent remodeling and this place was perfect in location, convenience, privacy, and host attention. It a a very cozy and comfortable place to stay. What we liked:

1 Private entrance to separate cottage through lovely garden and patio 2 Easy parking in a quiet residential neighborhood

3 Very short drive to great restaurants in downtown San Rafael (Could walk it on a nice day)

4 Small but fully equipped kitchen area with everything you could possibly need.

5 Great shower- lots of hot water

6. Large HDTV's in sitting area and bedroom

7 Handy office desk with full wi fi

8 Plenty of towels, extra blankets, pillows, etc

9 Hostess was caring, attentive and made sure we had everything we needed all the time

10 We were offered use of the hot tub and the BBQ in the charming patio but , unfortunately, the weather did not permit it

11 Very well laid out, efficient, 2 room cottage of about 300 sq ft.

We really enjoyed our stay.

Fantastic place!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this location many times - and we keep coming back! The apartment is fully stocked and very comfortable. With the full kitchen, it's possible to make a great meal. Or you can use Eda's gas barbeque. The garden is lovely and in the sunshine seems like a little bit of heaven. Downtown San Rafael is very walkable. Because the location is close to Sir Francis Drake Blvd. and the freeway, all parts of Marin are easy to reach as well as the wine country and San Francisco. We'll stay here many more times!

This woman tried to hustle me! Unprofessional and Awkward!

  • 1 of 5

Upon arriving Eda said she wanted to settle up on the remainder of the bill. She asked me for an extra 200.00 saying it was a “holiday surcharge”. Which I should have been charged properly through Home Away. I checked my bill, the listing and emails from her informing me of no such charge!!! She said she was saving ME money by not going through the third party. 😉

(Saving me money by surprising me upon arrival with an EXTRA 200.00 charge that her listing said nothing about!!!! 😂)

This is not legal and in direct violation to her contract with Home Away! EVERYTHING should be charged and accounted for through Home Away! But she’s trying to make a little extra on the side, and shrouded it with some BS about how it’s written on the website and how she’s trying to do me a favor! Now if I was a sucker and I didn’t know she was breaking the rules I would be out an additional 200.00! She would have gladly pocketed! For a place that is over priced. We didn’t even have enough toilet paper and needed to go to the store to purchase our own!

This made the stay very uncomfortable! And essentially ruined our trip!

Buyer Beware!!!!!

The actual cottage is in her back yard , 30 ft or less from her house. The hot tub is under her back window with no curtains to give you privacy. So awkward we didn’t use it! The bed is too small for a couple and the lamp in the room is broken!

Go somewhere else!!!!!!!!!

Owner's Response: (Readers- Please note my 50ish 5 star reviews and don't believe this review. I'm not sure what the motives are, but this review is untrue and uncalled for. ) Wow, Jillian, I am SHOCKED at this review. The Website clearly states that there is a Holiday Surcharge. Your stay was the week between Christmas and New Year, always a premium week. Upon your arrival, when we discussed your paying the balance due, I immediately agreed to forfeit the 200 fee, due to your misunderstanding. There was no hustle involved, and I was very gracious. I asked your boyfriend Brian whenever I saw him if there was anything you needed. He said everything was great. I was available to, and did, bring more TP. I checked the lamp, it is not broken. The cottage is in my backyard but there is a back curtain for privacy between my house and the garden. I am usually at work or gone. PS: I left you a nice review. I would appreciate it if you would take this review down, as we all know that I acted professionally.

Great stay in San Rafael

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed or stay at Eda’s rental. This was our fifth or sixth stay. The unit is well appointed, clean and comfortable. The location is convenient to the Fourth St. shopping and dining establishments. We look forward to our next stay.

A Perfect Stay

  • 5 of 5

Eda is a very welcoming host who is easily available for suggestions regarding the Bay Area and the immediate local area. The cottage is in a quiet neighborhood and convenient to downtown San Rafael as well as major highways. The garden is a peaceful and beautiful oasis complete with a hot tub. Although we enjoyed our dinners out, the kitchen supplied all we might have needed to prepare a meal and did provide a perfect space for our breakfasts and occasional lunches at "home". The cottage was very clean, tastefully decorated, very comfortable, and provided all that we needed for our 9 day stay. Parking was simple. I highly recommend this cottage and look forward to returning in the future.

Why Eda chose Picnic Valley

Walking distance to Downtown. San Rafael is so central, has great restaurants and shops and has events all year long. Visit the cityofsanrafael website for a list of events. Or go to

Downtownsanrafael for map a of town. The Mission and the Rafael Film Center (home of the Mill Valley Film Festival) are both here also!

What makes this cottage unique

Location, Location, Location - minutes to 101 and everything!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This guest cottage is private and charming - from the moment I entered the gate the scent of the foliage and a large orange tree in the garden welcomed me. Even though the weather was cold, the owner arranged the main room and bedroom to be warm and cozy upon arrival. The location is perfect for strolling or short walks to the center of town and close to excellent markets for food shopping. The bed is very comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. Large flat screen in living room and smaller in bdrm. It's in a quiet area which was important. So was the non smoking policy. The owner makes one feel very welcome.
