Kinsale:: Winner of European prize for Tourism and the Environment, Entente Florale, National Tidy Town, Gourmet Capital - one of Ireland's oldest towns, with narrow streets and many historic buildings to explore; all sheltered by a beautiful harbour.
Museums, historic forts, art galleries, craft shops, not to mention the 40+ bars and restaurants that give Kinsale its reputation for good food and that Irish only phenomenon called 'craic'. Oh, and the Guinness is good too!
For the active: Choose from 3 golf courses including the spectacular and world renowned Links at The Old Head of Kinsale, deep-sea fishing, sailing or perhaps a harbour cruise. Maybe spend a day at one of the many 'empty' beaches nearby or perhaps visit the Norman built 12th century church of St Multose and 15th century Desmond Castle which houses the International Musem of Wine, or the twin 17th century forts guarding the entrance to the harbour to learn about our town that is one of the oldest in Ireland.
Whatever is for you, you will find it here in Kinsale.
Getting here: Is easy with direct flights to Cork from most UK and many European airports. Coming from America? Cork is only a 3 hours car journey from Dublin and 2 hours from Shannon Airport.
If you're arriving by car Cork Ferryport, serving Roscoff in France, is only 14 miles away.
And finally, as our properties are in the grounds of Scilly House we are on hand if you need us. Just ask!

'We were delighted with the very high standard of accommodation....When we return to Kinsale it will be as much to experience staying in the Chart House and its wonderful gardens as it will be to experience Kinsale itself' Craig & Wendy R. July 2003
Many thanks for beautiful five star accommodation....its by far the best self catering we've had. Alan, Val & Jill B. March 2004
Your property is even more beautiful than the Internet pictures – Thank You for providing such a fantastic place to enjoy during our time in Kinsale. SB. Sept 2006
Thank you for a super holiday. The cottage and garden were fantastic (especially the tree house!) John & Michelle M. Chart House April 2005
The house was exquisite, and was exceptionally equipped, maintained and clean. We loved our stay there! A.D March 2007
Would like to thank you for our stay in Sam's Studio which was just a perfect holiday cottage. We were so comfortable and relaxed and the views were spectacular. T&J Oct 2007
Marian Cottage and the village of Kinsale were more than described accurately. Our stay in early April 08 allowed our spirits to be rejuvenated, by a village and accommodation that provided much more than we had expected. Marian Cottage is situated at the top of Scilly Hill, which is an easy walk into the village (although there are some steps) There is a great pub opposite (The Spaniard) which provides wholesome meals. Although Marian Cottage has more than enough amenities for the gourmet traveller with quality local produce being readily available. For those who enjoy their privacy Marien Cottage has a secluded courtyard, although it would be difficult to forgo the spectacular views provided from the (secret garden) access from the grounds of Scilly House. The property is very clean and well maintained, we will be recommending Marien Cottage to our family, friends & Colleagues.
I would like to add on a personal note that the owner Mark provided a service above what might normally be expected. We had been waiting on documents to arrive by mail from Australia on our departure from Kinsale they had yet to arrive. Mark drove a 40 minute round trip to Cork Airport to deliver the documents that had arrived not long after we had left. What a champion!
Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our stay at your beautiful property in Kinsale. We couldn't have asked for a nicer experience - both of the cottages were wonderful, so comfortable and well-equipped, and the view is spectacular! I just wish we had more time to enjoy the gardens. We even had pretty good weather! Our trips out to the peninsulas (I actually visited four of them on our trip - including the drive all around the Beara Peninsula - amazing!) were great - even navigated the narrow roads with no problem. We had a memorable evening of music at The Spaniard, and it was so nice not to have to worry about getting into a car to drive home after a pint! Favorite food in Kinsale was a toss-up between the raspberry pancakes at the Blue (???) and everything at The Bullman. And the walking tour of the town with Barry was both educational and fun - he's a terrific guide.
I would recommend this property to anyone...without reservation...and feel free to give my e-mail address to anyone who would like to know more from a prior guest.
We spent four relaxing nights at Marian Cottage. Everything is just as described and the cottage could not have been more warm or welcoming! Everything needed was at our fingertips and we enjoyed the house inside and out! We would highly recommend staying at one of the Houston's properties, as they are perfectly located an easy walk from the charming town of Kinsale!
We just finished a two week stay at our comfortable Kinsale cottage. Mark was extremely helpful and very responsive to emails/questions which provides a feeling of security for travelers. Our cottage had everything you need: lots of hot water, comfortable bed, darling garden with furniture, plenty of space and minimal (but very adequate) cooking equipment for vacationers.
We were also happy with a refresh and clean towels at the end of the week. Flowers and some chocolates ( I never saw them but my husband said they were delicious!) on arrival, too.
Location is great. A bit uphill but short walk, and there are some wonderful walks in the area. You must take the walk to Fort Charles and stop by Bulman's, the beginning of this walk is right out your door and along the water. Tourist Info center not too helpful if you are a walker. We used the local bus to get to Skibbereen and Clonakilty for additional walks.
The restaurants in town are very good. Each morning I walked to The White House Inn for breakfast and coffee. Nice waitstaff and reasonable prices. Dino's for take-away or eat in,; Fishy Fishy for .....fish; Bruno's for fabulous pizza and pasta + excellent wine--make a reservation as it is small.
Thanks, Mark and Diane for wonderful memories of Ireland and its hospitality!
We stayed for a few nights in this lovely cottage, and were very happy with the accommodation for the most part. Martin was extremely thorough in providing driving directions from Cork City to the cottage. Once he met us, and showed us through the cottage, he left us to our privacy. We didn't see him again. We never did meet his wife.
The cottage is cozy, and quite comfortable. Ample room for two adults in both the living area, sleeping area, bathroom and kitchen.
The bathroom is large and set up nicely with a separate shower and tub. There is a small clothes rack available to use for hanging clothes to dry. Very useful and convenient.
The bed/sleeping area was nice, with a generally comfortable and large bed. I prefer a bit softer bed, but this bed was fine by all means.
The Sitting area is nice, with a good size flat screen tv. There is a little stove in which you can build a fire, but we never did. It was warm enough inside without it, even though it was still quite chilly weather wise when we visited.
The kitchen was nice, and had a good sized refrigerator. There were a couple of minor issues, with skillets that weren't really useable, and a small pot with a leaky handle. Nothing that detracted from the stay. We left Martin a note telling him about these little things when we left. It was a simple enough matter to use the broiler pan and broil the food we'd bought for our dinner.
The cottage is a decent walking distance from the village proper. There is a set of steps that lead to a lower area of the hill, so one doesn't have to walk along the roadway. There is a good size, full service grocery store a bit off the beaten path, if you do not find all you want in the smaller shops. The little bookstore is lovely, as is the butcher shop. We enjoyed our stroll through the village shops as well as the general sights along the harbor.
We did a few day trips from here, and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way.
We'd definitely recommend this sweet little cottage to anyone who wishes to spend a few days in the pretty village of Kinsale.
The cottage had everything we needed and more! It is a lovely spacious cottage. It was very clean. We had a lovely patio and sat out there most mornings. It is about a 10 mins walk from the centre of Kinsale in a place called Scilly. The local pub is The Spaniard. It is oldie world pub. The staff are great. There is a lovely restaurant attached. Although it is just across the road from the cottage there was no noise. Kinsale is a lovely place. Plenty of great walks. My favourite restaurant there was Jim Edwards. There are lots of good restaurants. Will be back and will book Marian Cottage again. Thanks to Mark for providing such a lovely cottage.
Kinsale is situated on the south coast of Ireland, at the start of the Wild Atlantic Way, and just 15 miles from Cork and its International Airport. The town is the gateway to the wonderful countryside of West Cork and is famous for its gourmet reputation. Pub and restaurant within a minutes walk. Walk to town centre in 5 minutes, to find many many others. Charles Fort, museums and other historic sites all within walking distance. Beaches and sporting activities, including sailing, kayaking, horse riding and golf are only a few minutes drive away.
