Kinsale:: Winner of European prize for Tourism and the Environment, Entente Florale, National Tidy Town, Gourmet Capital - one of Ireland's oldest towns, with narrow streets and many historic buildings to explore; all sheltered by a beautiful harbour.
Museums, historic forts, art galleries, craft shops, not to mention the 40+ bars and restaurants that give Kinsale its reputation for good food and that Irish only phenomenon called 'craic'. Oh, and the Guinness is good too!
For the active: Choose from 3 golf courses including the spectacular and world renowned Links at The Old Head of Kinsale, deep-sea fishing, sailing or perhaps a harbour cruise. Maybe spend a day at one of the many 'empty' beaches nearby or perhaps visit the Norman built 12th century church of St Multose and 15th century Desmond Castle which houses the International Musem of Wine, or the twin 17th century forts guarding the entrance to the harbour to learn about our town that is one of the oldest in Ireland.
Whatever is for you, you will find it here in Kinsale.
Getting here: Is easy with direct flights to Cork from most UK and many European airports. Coming from America? Cork is only a 3 hours car journey from Dublin and 2 hours from Shannon Airport.
If you're arriving by car Cork Ferryport, serving Roscoff in France, is only 14 miles away.
And finally, as our properties are in the grounds of Scilly House we are on hand if you need us. Just ask!

My husband and I recently returned from a three week stay in Kinsale Ireland—a long time dream trip for us. It was our good fortune that we came across a wonderful looking two bedroom cottage on Scilly owned by Mark and Diane Houston. It was so perfect looking we assumed the pictures might be showing only the “best parts”.. We booked it, hoping for the best and arrived on a rainy afternoon. We called Mark to see if the cottage was open and planned to get a taxi. Mark insisted on picking us up and taking us by the Super Market to get things we would need for breakfast. In my lifetime of travelling I have never had an owner pick us up and care about our breakfast needs! When we walked in Cara’s cottage I knew I was home. It was bright, light with lots of windows, wood floors and a spacious well stocked kitchen. On the kitchen table was a vase with hot pink hydrangeas and little chocolates. I love cozy and this was the most comfortable, cozy, lovely place I could ever have imagined. The walled garden with its gorgeous hydrangea bushes was such a calming and blooming place to sit with our morning coffee. Cara’s cottage is the perfect location; a nice seven minute walk to town center, and a one minute walk downhill to a path (Scilly Walk) that takes you by the harbor under a canopy of trees. If we were too tired at night to go far, across the street is The Spaniard, that serves delicious food (the best fish chowder we had) and a bar with the friendliest bartenders you can find. Kinsale itself is a glorious and beautiful town full of good restaurants, great art and welcoming people. My husband is a professional photographer and videographer. He thought he had died and gone to heaven for everywhere you look are flowers , the sea, cliffs, sail boats in the harbor and hills with hundreds of shades of green--beautiful green everywhere It is obvious that Mark and Diane take tremendous pride in their property and will do what it takes to make your stay easy and comfortable. I don’t think we have ever stayed anywhere where the owner was so thoughtful and generous. I have read all the five star reviews and I ditto every one of them. Kinsale is not to be missed. If you can stay the week stay at one of the Houston’s cottages. You will not be disappointed.

My husband, daughter and I stayed at Cara's Cottage for five days at the end of May and it was a wonderful retreat. It is clean, comfortable, convenient and charming. We could easily walk into the village and, though we drove, Charles Fort is also an accessible walk. The Spaniard, just across the street, was excellent and if they have the lemon meringue pie, by all means order it! We went back a second time just for dessert! Diane greeted us on arrival and let us know that she was available to answer any questions. We really felt at home here and hope to one day return.
I spent two weeks in Cara's Cottage and would recommend it to anyone. The location is ideal--an easy walk into Kinsale, equally easy access to the Scilly and Harbour walks. The cottage is quiet, spacious, and well equipped. The view from the garden patio is stunning. I'd been traveling for some weeks before arriving here and it was wonderful to unpack and relax. Mark, the owner, was polite and helpful, popping by to ask if I needed anything and otherwise leaving me to enjoy a lovely time.
We stayed in Cara's Cottage during the latter half of March and were really pleased with the location and the lovely accommodations. The cottage is about a 10 minute walk to downtown Kinsale and is conveniently located across from The Spaniard pub. There is lots to see in Kinsale--Charles Fort, for instance--and many very good restaurants. We explored other parts of Cork County as well as the National Park in Kerry. If you want to visit southwestern Ireland Kinsale is a lovely place to base yourself. One piece of advice if you are an American driver--the left side driving is no problem, but some roads are very narrow so get the smallest rental car you can.
Great little cottage, lovely location, very well equipped.
It was a lovely little walk into Kinsale. Parking right outside the cottage was great.
I saw that some people had said there were problems of noise from the Spainiards pub - we didn't have a problem with it at all.
Kinsale is situated on the south coast of Ireland, at the start of the Wild Atlantic Way, and just 15 miles from Cork and its International Airport. The town is the gateway to the wonderful countryside of West Cork and is famous for its gourmet reputation. Pub and restaurant within a minutes walk. Walk to town centre in 5 minutes, to find many many others. Charles Fort, museums and other historic sites all within walking distance. Beaches and sporting activities, including sailing, kayaking, horse riding and golf are only a few minutes drive away.
