Kinsale:: Winner of European prize for Tourism and the Environment, Entente Florale, National Tidy Town, Gourmet Capital - one of Ireland's oldest towns, with narrow streets and many historic buildings to explore; all sheltered by a beautiful harbour.
Museums, historic forts, art galleries, craft shops, not to mention the 40+ bars and restaurants that give Kinsale its reputation for good food and that Irish only phenomenon called 'craic'. Oh, and the Guinness is good too!
For the active: Choose from 3 golf courses including the spectacular and world renowned Links at The Old Head of Kinsale, deep-sea fishing, sailing or perhaps a harbour cruise. Maybe spend a day at one of the many 'empty' beaches nearby or perhaps visit the Norman built 12th century church of St Multose and 15th century Desmond Castle which houses the International Musem of Wine, or the twin 17th century forts guarding the entrance to the harbour to learn about our town that is one of the oldest in Ireland.
Whatever is for you, you will find it here in Kinsale.
Getting here: Is easy with direct flights to Cork from most UK and many European airports. Coming from America? Cork is only a 3 hours car journey from Dublin and 2 hours from Shannon Airport.
If you're arriving by car Cork Ferryport, serving Roscoff in France, is only 14 miles away.
And finally, as our properties are in the grounds of Scilly House we are on hand if you need us. Just ask!

2 bed/1.5 bath property on 2 floors with garden overlooking Kinsale harbour. Located in Scilly, close to all local attractions.
Chart House provided us with the perfect accomodation for a family of four with two young children. The house is perfectly located within easy walking to Kinsale town with all the amenities you need. Having a garden was an added benefit as we were lucky with the weather and the views from the house over the head of Kinsale, the harbour and town itself are truly glorious. Mark is a wonderful host, very accomodating and provides everything you could possibly need in the house. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were very sad to leave.
We chose Chart House for our short break accommodation from the difficult choice of 3 well-presented properties in beautiful Kinsale, Co. Cork. Our decision was helped by the open fire (January visit) and the amazing views from both bedrooms of the area near the Old Head of Kinsale at the mouth of the River Bandon.
The booking process was smooth and required very little questioning due to the well organised and informative process that Mark & Diane have in place. This continues on arrival with a tour of the property backed up with an information folder (Which will be needed as it’s easy to be distracted during the tour by the views!) Mark & Diane live next door should you have any further questions, but to be honest, everything is covered.
It is a bit of an understatement for us to say the property is well equipped!
Everything from Satellite TV (although the open fire was our entertainment) and WiFi to a descent frying pan for obligatory Clonakilty Back & White! Both bedrooms have all the amenities needed and hope the views have the same impact on you as they did us. The second bedroom can be made up as a Twin or spacious King. Foldaway beds are also available for extra occupancy. Bonus features are the two separate bathrooms, one with bath/shower and one with shower (Oh! Sorry, forgot to say the latter also has ‘the view’ during your morning ablutions!)
We came across a least two well stocked grocery stores and chemists a short walk (Can involve steps to shorten distance) or even shorter drive into Kinsale should you be travelling internationally. They should be able to meet all your grocery and toiletry needs.
Mark was able to share some of his preferred ‘stop offs’ which I must say were well received by ourselves. The Spaniard Pub has a fantastic friendly atmosphere with open fires, sawdust! and live music. With the music, check locally for day and time and suggest getting in early. Our trip didn’t allow time for the restaurant……this time! (but is ranked #8 of 63 in Kinsale – TripAdvisor)
We did however, take Marks advice on ‘The Bullman’ which is a lovely walk at the bottom of the drive. Scilly Walk takes you around the coastal path to Summercove, don’t forget to keep looking back if the sun’s setting! (Quite a steep but short climb up the path toward the end, if with elderly) Well worth the walk for the location, atmosphere and quality of food and not forgetting the service provided by Tom (Bar Manager) and his staff. Most convenient location with stunning view of the Kinsale harbor. This cottage is quiet with all the conveniences American travelers want. Large kitchen, With huge table. Vast living room and plenty of heat, two leather couches, lights with great atmosphere. Several tables and extra chairs. Mark and Diane are an email or phone call away and prompt to suggest great places to visit. The Chart house is private and Diane filled the house with every cooking and baking dish you need of good quality, lots of dish towels and supplies for the dish washer and washing machine. The "Spa" towels are so fluffy, extra blankets and great little home touches. All appliances are easy to use and manuals supplied. Full baskets of fire starter and endless supply of wood. The bedrooms are very large and two bathrooms, lots of closet space. Views from every window. The whole house was spotless and there was plenty of dishes, tea cups, tea pots, juice glasses, wine glasses, beer mugs, Cupboard space for everything. There was lots of tea samples. I have rented over 20 cottages in Europe and this one was a so luxurious in space and quality that I would love to share this cottage and recommend this cottage to any first time or returning visitor. The back yard garden is all yours with benches and outside dining. The Sun room is decorated with lovely furniture. Mark and Diane were so accommodating and easy to work with. There was not a book of rules to follow for the cottage just common sense and you could easily keep the house tidy. This is a true paradise for Americans used to houses with plenty of room which is hard to find when traveling. This Chart House is close to all the historical sights you need to see around Kinsale. The town of Kinsale is only a 1/2 hour from Cork and central and easy to get to Kilarney and Bantry.. There are twogrocery stores within driving distance, you could walk to town down a hill. The pub is just a short walk from the Chart House but you do not hear any noise from the pub because of the private location of this place. I liked how easy it was to park and get in and out of the cottage. This couple has several places on their property and for the value and pleasure of finally finding a wonderful spot was such a relief. The pictures do not do it justice. This is truly the place to stay and we can't believe we found it. Some organic foods in the local markets but well worth the trip to The English Market in Cork.
Our party of three loved the views of Kinsale Harbor from every window of Chart House and the location just a short walk into Kinsale. We appreciated having two bedrooms and two bathrooms as well as trouble-free wifi and a well appointed kitchen (nice appliances, a coffee pot we could operate, and a washer and dryer to catch up on laundry)
We can't say enough about the kindness and willingness of the owner, Mark, to help us enjoy our holiday. He was super with everything from the typical requests like how to turn up the heat and options for dinner to even calling our car rental company to arrange a smaller car better suited to the small Irish roads. He really did go above and beyond to sort it out for us so we could enjoy our three nights in Kinsale.
You can walk across the road to the well-known pub, The Spaniard or to a fantastic meal at Man Friday (we recommend the Early Bird three course menu). Even though you're close to these Scilly establishments, the house is situated on a hill overlooking the water behind other cottages and is in a quiet spot.
We were with my 76 year old father, so we didn't take advantage of the nearby pedestrian walking path over to The Bulman and Charles Fort (both visible from Chart House), but we drove instead. The path will be something for us to look forward to on another visit during warmer weather. The brief walk into Kinsale was something we did do, and it was quite manageable. I even preferred it to taking the car into the narrow town roads. While in Kinsale, we enjoyed Don's 90-minute walking tour of the old town...a bargain at just €6.
Kinsale has a lot to offer and the cozy vacation home atmosphere of Chart House worked well for us. We would return.
Note that the property does have steep interior stairs to both bedrooms, so might not be suitable for everyone.
Kinsale is situated on the south coast of Ireland, at the start of the Wild Atlantic Way, and just 15 miles from Cork and its International Airport. The town is the gateway to the wonderful countryside of West Cork and is famous for its gourmet reputation. Pub and restaurant within a minutes walk. Walk to town centre in 5 minutes, to find many many others. Charles Fort, museums and other historic sites all within walking distance. Beaches and sporting activities, including sailing, kayaking, horse riding and golf are only a few minutes drive away.
