Little House on the River is nestled at the base of the western slope of the Cumberland Mountains in the scenic Rocky River Community of Van Buren County. Situated in the heart of Middle Tennessee, and centrally located between Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville, it is located 2.8 miles off Hwy. 30 - 15 miles east of McMinnville and 15 miles west of Spencer at 14142 Rocky River Road, Rock Island, TN.

This cozy little cottage was completed in October 2008. It is surrounded by over 5 acres of privacy, has 640 square feet of living space, 384 square feet of covered porches, and a 162 square feet patio.

You won't be able to resist relaxing in the swing or sitting in one of the rocking chairs on the back porch as you watch the river wash your cares away. You will also want to hike along the almost 1400 feet of clean, spring-fed river. Keep your eyes open for beavers, otters, squirrels, chipmunks, wood ducks, blue herons, Canada geese, and the neighbors cows across the river. Bring your fishing pole - the river is stocked with trout several times a year.

You will want to walk down to the river and spend some peaceful time there with its beautiful views up and down the river. There is a hammock right above there that is just waiting for you. You are going to love the soothing sounds of the water as the river ripples by.

The house has one bedroom with a queen-size bed and window with a view of the river. There is one bath with a tub/shower combo. Bed linens are provided as well as towels and wash cloths. Towels for any river activity are NOT provided. There is a sofa in the living room that includes two recliners -- it is NOT a sofa bed. A TV with DISH service and DVD player are also in that area. The kitchen is stocked with basic cooking and serving supplies. A phone is NOT provided. Cell phone service is possible but not optimal. A heating / air conditioning unit is located in the living area, along with an electric 'wood burning' stove. Cuddle up in the winter months or open the windows in mild weather to enjoy the refreshing breeze.

A charcoal grill is on site, but you'll need to bring your own charcoal. There is also a fire ring with firewood provided.

About Deborah C Moffitt

Your hosts are Debby & Joe Moffitt. We have always lived in Middle Tennessee and feel fortunate to be so close to so much natural beauty. Joe is a retired school administrator and we still operate a nursery - Shangri La Farm - primarily selling daylilies. Together, we have 12 children and 29 grandchildren.

Deborah C Moffitt purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Deborah C Moffitt chose Tennessee

After looking at river / creek property for several years, we found our dream spot near the headwaters of Rocky River. It is located close to our primary residence and is a favorite spot when children and grandchildren visit.

As much as we love this place we call home, we also love to travel. As we have done that, and used a variety of accommodations, we have discovered that our favorite places to stay are similar to what we built overlooking Rocky River. Our idea of a perfect getaway - is just that - a getaway: from the traffic, the crowds, the noise, and the lure of tourist traps.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is a real plus. Rock Island State Park is about 15 minutes away. Cumberland Caverns (home of Bluegrass Underground) is about the same. Driving just a little bit longer will take you to beautiful Fall Creek Falls State Park. As fun as those destinations are, there are not words to describe the picturesque Rocky River farming community, the sounds and sights of nature, and the calming effect of the river as it ripples by. We think you'll love Little House as much as we do! Leave your cares behind and come recharge at one of the prettiest little spots on earth.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for a peaceful and relaxing getaway from school, work, and life in general. I loved hearing the water, rocking on the porch, going for walks on the driveway, trying out all of the seating, and gazing at the stars. Prayers of appreciation were made for all of the many wonderful blessings that I enjoy! God is so good! I enjoyed shopping in Sparta, dinner at The Foglight Foodhouse, and the waterfalls at Rock Island Park! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home! I plan to return hopefully during fall. Thank you for the goodies! Thank you especially for getting me back to the house when I was lost and no GPS! May God bless you, your family, and all who stay in this beautiful home!

So relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

Joe & Debby, the owners, have a fantastic set up here. Everything you could possibly need. And it's clean and simple. I really enjoyed sitting on the back porch listening to the water. I can't wait to come back when it's cooler and use the fire pit. I needed this sabbatical!! I could have easily never left during my stay if it weren't for feeling like I needed to check in with my family. (I could not get cell service, I'm on Sprint). But it was nice not being on my phone all the time!! I plan to return!!! Awesome place.

This was a great getaway! Everything you need is there except food and its not far away.

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved the house and the river flowing behind it. The only reason I gave it a 4 was bc it didnt have a tv in the bedroom and the one in the living area was rather small. We didnt want to spend much time indoors so this was fine. Love the property and everything it offers. Full kitchen allows u to never leave if u dont want to. Only need to take a short trip to town for groceries. We loved our experience and will definitely be going back. We fished out back and caught rainbow trout. We sat out back and roasted weinies on a camp fire. Spent a day at the state park walking trails and seeing the waterfalls.

Amazing hidden gem for a relaxing getaway.

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing experience! The Little House and the grounds that surround it are sublime; breathtaking setting, incredibly well maintained/landscaped, perfectly situated on the quaintest of riverfront lots. Extremely high attention to detail in the construction and interior design (as well as cleanliness and preparedness by our hosts) make the Little House of the River feel like a home, and not a cookie-cutter rental. The location is perfect as a blend of isolated/private, with beautiful country to hike/walk through nearby, and within a reasonable (e.g. 10 min) driving distance to whatever one may need. Cannot possibly do it enough justice. The Little House itself and its surroundings are deeply aesthetically pleasing, welcoming and relaxing (in any weather). Best described in terms of a feel and mood-setting ... this is the place to disconnect ... to rest, reflect, and recharge. Really looking forward to staying at the Little House on the River again (and again) ...

Charming Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay by the river in this clean adorable house. Very private surroundings and it was difficult to decide which place to sit and enjoy doing nothing so we moved around! Can't imagine anyone being disappointed.
