About Dawn Hornburger Cox

John and Sheila Reiner own this property, but Dawn Hornburger Cox is the on island manager. You will be contacting Dawn for bookings and questions.

John is a landscape architect and Sheila is a retired school teacher. We love travel (especially to our home in St. John), theater, and fine dining. We have four adult children who spent much of their growing up years vacationing on St. John. As a family, we often spend our Christmas vacations in our St. John home, sharing old memories and making new ones.

Why Dawn Hornburger Cox chose St John

John and I chose to build our vacation home on St. John because we love the natural beauty and quiet of the island, and because it is one of the U.S. territories. We wanted to build our home where we could enjoy perfect weather all year round. Because the Virgin Islands National Park covers two thirds of the island, we are assured it will keep its pristine, natural environment.

What makes this house unique

Our home is in a quiet area called Estate Fish Bay. It overlooks the calm, blue waters of Fish Bay and the Caribbean Ocean. On a clear day we can see St. Croix in the distance. Our house rises above the tree tops with a spectacular, panoramic view of the Caribbean and surrounding mountains. One of our favorite pastimes while in our paradise home is feeding sugar water to and watching the small yellow birds, Banana Quits, as they dart back and forth from our deck to the trees below. John and I also love spending time lying in one of the two hammocks in our screened in porches reading a good book and watching the shadows on the mountains and ocean as the sun makes its way across the Caribbean blue sky. We are ten minutes away from the quaint village of Cruz Bay, and just minutes away from all of the white sand beaches of the island.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a delight to find in this sweet house after battling with sand flies and mosquitos at Cinnamon Bay. Thanks to the Reiners for being the pioneers in this neighborhood and let us share their love of the island! We will come back!

Fantastic Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 8 (7 adults and a 12 year old). The house was just as described and was very clean. There was plenty of room for the 8 of us. The deck is large and the view is amazing. The kitchen was equipped with the all the necessities. The water comes from a cistern so you cannot use it for drinking or making coffee. Stock up on gallons of bottled water. Teeth brushing with it is fine. The water wasn't a big deal at all. Dawn was very responsive from when we first booked until when we left. She was friendly, informative and quick to respond. Like most houses on the island, there is only air conditioning in the 2 bedrooms. There are plenty of screen sliding doors for a good cross breeze. The loft rooms have windows, ceiling fans and extra floor fans to keep cool. The loft would not be ideal for smaller children. The stairs are steep and you have to use caution. Once up in the lofts, they are very roomy. We ended up moving our son into the master bedroom with us. We just took a twin mattress from the loft and put it on the bedroom floor. If you have younger ones, you can probably fit 2 twins on the floor of each master. There are two full baths but they are in each of the master bedrooms, so anyone not in a master must come through to use them. None of this was a big deal but just wanted to make note of it. If you go to the beach there are tons of items available at the house for you: beach chairs, coolers, some snorkeling gear, sand buckets, toys and beach towels. The house really had everything we needed. The internet worked pretty well. If it was cloudy or the wind was blowing a little hard, you could have a hard time getting service for a little bit. Nothing to do with the service at the house...just how it goes on the island in general. Everything was very nice and we made a lot of great memories. We were with someone who used to live on the island so we did a lot of traveling around the island, but Dawn will give you tons of ideas if you have never been there before. There are many amazing beaches. The only caution are the roads. They drive on the left and the roads are very narrow, go up, down and around. Many driveways and some roads are pretty steep at times so get a vehicle with 4 wheel drive if possible. The driveway at this house is also steep, but we ended up parking towards the top since we had a mini van. No way it would make it up and down. We just improvised, but you do a lot of that with island living.

Great View of Fish Bay

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the La Petite Casa was very enjoyable thanks to Dawn, who despite being seven months pregnant was very accommodating and helpful . The house had a roomy open concept with large windows and sliding doors that provided excess to a large deck and a spectacular view of fish bay. The bedrooms provided access to screened porches with the hammocks which was a very nice touch and relaxing. The house was very clean and well furnished, with a updated kitchen and appliances making it perfect for a larger family or group.

We had a great time and visited all of the north shore beaches and enjoyed Trunk Bay the most. The snorkeling was outstanding with waterlemon being the best snorkeling . The fishing charter with mixed bag (Dawn Thanks for the recommendation) was very successful and enjoyable. This was one of our more memorable vacations and would definitely visit again

Spectacular view and comfortable accommodations

  • 5 of 5

The view of Fish Bay is breathtaking. Kitchen was really wonderful with plenty of room to maneuver and cook. Air conditioning in bedrooms is a real added comfort. Cable and Internet were a plus. My only suggestion would be to place a few chairs in the two rooms with the hammocks for easy conversation. The washer and dryer were clean and spotless with great energy savings features.

Snorkeling at Trunk Bay was a favorite and so convenient from the house. We loved Long Board, a new restaurant that was celebrating its first anniversary. This was one of many favorite restaurants and bars on the island. Our host and the folks on the island were so friendly and eager to help with directions and show the way around the island. We are so eager to return to this little piece of paradise.

I would highly recommend this home and a vacation in St. John to anyone who wants to get away from it all and soak in the beauty of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Beautiful spot, lovely view dawn to dusk

  • 4 of 5

Had lovely stay a la petite casa on St John. We stayed mid march - beautiful weather every day. The house is roomy with a large deck over looking the water. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner almost every day out on the deck. We packed lunch for the beach. We never had to use the air conditioners (in the first floor two bedrooms). Lots of hot water for daily showers, washer and dryer, beach chairs - just about everything you need. The driveway is tricky - but that is the case for most of the island. Kind of like riding a roller coaster on the left side of the street. Two screened in porches with hammocks - bring a book - so relaxing. There are two lofts with twin beds and ladders -kind of steep-( not for little ones.) Dawn met us at the ferry when we arrived and guided us to our vacation haven. She had picked up our initial grocery order and dropped it at the house. She even offered her person recommendations for beaches and sea turtles. Great location to town and easy travel to all the beaches. We visited a different beach each day - Trunk Bay is beautifuln - get there early to find your spot, Honey moon beach had fantastic snorkeling, hammocks in the trees - tho there is a hike (1/3 of a mile down hill - kind of rocky) . Maho had the sea turtles, Hawksnest had stingrays, waterlemon cay is a hike , small rocky beach - saw sea turtles. Francis bay, beautiful drops off quickly in the water, . The beaches are all amazing!!!! Great vacation! Be sure to wash your things before coming home as some of the beaches have sand fleas and they will come with you.

A splendid home in paradise

  • 5 of 5

When you walk into the home, the breath taking views of the ocean will amaze you. The deck offers incredible views of the bay during the day and the stars envelop you at night. Off both bedrooms on the first floor, there are screened porches, each with a hammock to lull you into total relaxation. The peace of the neighborhood is another bonus. The home was sparkling clean. The concierge service was amazing. The open concept of the living area and kitchen welcomes guests. We had incredible meals, conversations, games and laughter. The home becomes your own oasis. It is close to Cruz Bay, an easy drive for shopping, dining, and exploring. Trunk Bay, Hawks Nest, and Cinnamon Bay beaches are easily accessible. You can spend the day on pristine beaches, or hike among ruins. This beautiful home allows for complete enjoyment of all St. John has to offer. I have recommended this home to all my co-workers and family members. Myown family is already looking forward to coming back! If you need a taste of heaven on earth, this is the place for you.

Bliss on Fish Bay

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to St. John for 5 years now and this was easily our best experience. The house represents the best of what my family loves in a beach house; clean, convenient and with a killer balcony with bay view to match the excellent accommodations. Two immaculate master bedrooms with newly renovated ensuite baths were perfect for our group. Our niece/babysitter stayed in one of the two lofts and loved it! The manager Dawn was amazing from start to finish! She communicated with us throughout the reservation and periodically until we arrived on the island. She met us at the ferry dock even though we arrived late and brought us to the property. The kitchen is also newly remodeled and along with the grill on the deck we had a few excellent meals at the house. We loved the house and felt like a part of the family that owns the property...we will be back next year!
