An English family with a love for travel, adventure and surf escaped a wet and grey English winter with their 4 young children and happened upon Playa Hermosa, Santa Teresa and did not want to leave this special place.
Cristina Sartori purchased this villa in 2009
All the family loves to surf and live the simple shoeless outdoor lifestyle possible in and around the amazing nature and wildlife of the Nicoya Peninsula. Playa Hermosa is incredible and as designers by trade, we fulfilled our dream of building a beautiful and stylish family home in the tropics for us and others to enjoy.
The name 'Kala' comes from the Sanskrit to mean 'to be in the moment'. We believe that Casa Kala offers guests a truly special place to unwind and let go of their usual hectic lives. We designed a living space that offers comfort, style, privacy and tranquillity in a stunning jungle location that borders the most amazing surf beach in Costa Rica and just so happens to have been voted one of the top ten beaches in the world.
My husband and I stayed in Casita Kala (next to Casa Kala) for just over a week. We were pleasantly surprised that the casita lived up to the pictures we saw on-line. Inside, the bed was super comfortable, and it was nice to have the kitchen to prepare our own meals. The bathroom is outdoors so we had to get used to visits from local land crabs (part of the experience:). It rained quite a bit while we were there (start of the rainy season) but there is a beautiful covered outdoor patio with a table and hammock so that was a real bonus. The grounds of Batik Costa Rica are very well kept and secure. There is a security guard at the front over night and cars are parked inside the gate. We felt very safe here.
The walk to the beach is quite short, and playa hermosa is a quieter and cleaner version of Playa Carmen (previously Playa Santa Teresa)...it is a sandy beach (no stones) and lots of waves. The rip tide can be quite strong so those with young children would want to be extra cautious.
We rented an SUV this trip which is a must have if you stay here and want to be able to do day trips and your own grocery shopping. Super Ronny 2 is where we did most of our shopping. Recommended restaurants Habanero for solid Mexican food, El Pulpo for take out pizza, and if you are willing to drive to Montezuma, Playa des los Artistas was great with the view of the ocean.
The manager Dahlia was great and super accommodating to us during our stay. The cleaning staff did a fantastic job cleaning our room everyday and making it smell nice.
We would absolutely go back, it is a great place to spend time if you really just want to relax and get away from it all.
We are repeat clients here and it is becoming our home away from home. The villa is beautifully appointed with gorgeous wood and comfortable furniture. You can get as much or as little help as you want as far as cleaning and housekeeping. The pool is a welcome respite after surfing, or walking on the beach, which is just a stroll through the gardens and a bit of jungle. Monkeys are regularly seen. The sunsets are spectacular. There is a barbeque available, the village isn't too far away for supplies, and we just love it here.
Casa Kala really is paradise, situated in an idyllic and peaceful area on the Nicoya Peninsula. The Villa itself is beautiful, surrounded by tropical plants, an infinity pool, yoga studio, and in three minutes walking distance to an amazing private surf beach.
Me and my partner stayed for ten days of heaven on earth. The weather was exceptional, beautiful blue sky everyday, and with the pool and the sea right there to cool off in the heat never got too much.
From Casa Kala you can hear the howler monkeys, and see them in the mango trees as you walk down to the beach.
The villa is a short drive from Santa Theresa, a vibrant seaside town, with great food shops, independent cafes and bars.
The surf on Playa Hermosa can be exceptional, my partner and myself had been travelling down the west coast of Mexico, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and we had one of our best surfs here!
My girlfriend and I spent 4 nights in the Casita Kala. The accommodations were just as advertised and the location/beach was absolutely beautiful. Dahlia was also very helpful and made the stay seamless. Definitely take advantage of sunrise yoga!
My husband and I live in San Jose and go with some regularity to Malpais/Santa Teresa. We always try to stay at any of the Batik villas! They are all well presented (great Bali style), have a lovely open air concept (but with the benefits of AC in the bedrooms), and completely appointed with all that one needs in a "home away from home." Plus the owners and Dahlia, who helps manage the property, are superb!
As a guest, in addition to your villa, you'll enjoy the beautiful garden area, community BBQ, yoga shala and the close proximity to the beach.
Do not pass up an opportunity to spend some time at Batik! You'll be happy you did!
I stayed at Casa Kala for a few weeks and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to explore the delights of Puntarenas. It's only a few hundred metres away from Hermosa beach; great for surfing or watching epic sunsets! There's also plenty of trails for mountain biking in the surroundings or for horse riding. I personally loved running down the beach along the coast, where the beaches feel completely untouched.
The house itself is great to relax in, freshen up in the fantastic pool, or cook up a delicious meal in the very modern kitchen. The rooms feel fresh, the bathrooms are very modern and will comfortably host a large family. It's location is ideal; close enough to the shops in case you need to pick something up, but secluded enough so you feel you are really getting away from it all.
If you want to experience a little bit of paradise in style and comfort, don't hesitate and stay in Casa Kala!
