I grew up in Barbados and Australia, after I moved from Australia to New Orleans, Louisiana after 8 years in New Orleans I moved back to Barbados, that was 26 years ago. I just love this island, the people are open and friendly, everyone talks to you. We are very spoilt here as our weather is perfect.
Orissa purchased this Apartment in 2001
Why Orissa chose Silver Sands
Silver Sands is a special place for me as I had friends who lived in this area when I was growing up on the island. There are always cooling breezes. When I found this property I just fell in love with it because I love the warmth and feel of wood and wanted to own something that reflected our island culture. The condo has a coral stone wall on the inside, this is the stone that our island is made up of, it is a beautiful natural wall that runs along the living room and kitchen. I renovated the apartment gradually. I love to cook so I have stocked the kitchen with everything you could possibly need. You can walk to several beaches from the condo, in particular there is a small beach just a short walk away that is so perfect you will sometimes have it all to yourself. If you feel in the need to mix and mingle, Silver Rock Hotel is in walking distance, they have a great bar and friendly staff and a pool. Up the hill is a convenience store stocked to the hilt.
What makes this Apartment unique
The patio is by far my favourite place, you can sit in your chair at the table and look out over the ocean, the windsurfers and kite surfers are amazing to watch as they fly across the water. The kitchen is located in such a way that you can be cooking and watching all the activity out on the water.

A LITTLE GEM ON THE SOUTH COAST
My wife and I have been to Barbados on several occasions and love the South coast.
We thought we’d done it all, but this little gem of an apartment was a real eye-opener and superb value for money.
If having the choice of two beaches to yourself within walking distance, a peaceful away from it all existence and yet being only five minutes drive or bus ride from Oistins shopping and night life appeals, try a couple of weeks at this ground floor apartment adjacent to Silver Sands beach.
The main bedroom is to the rear of the building and is well air-conditioned if the ceiling fan isn’t enough – it was for us!
The bathroom has an ample walk-in shower with room for two (!) and the permanent sea breeze keeps the generous sized living room and kitchen more than comfortable.
There is also a nice veranda area out front ideal for eating or having a few friends over for drinks.
The apartment is reasonably priced anyway, but I couldn’t believe the extras! Washing machine, iron and board, microwave, toaster, safe, colour TV and DVD, cable TV and high-speed wireless internet connection – everything you’d expect in a much pricier hotel!
We normally hire a car, but there is a good bus service (no 11) which stops nearby outside the old Silver Sands Hotel which will take you to Oistins, then along the south coast via St Lawrence Gap to Bridgetown. The old hotel has been shut for some time which means the beach is yours to enjoy.
There is also a charming smaller alternative called Rescue beach to the right some five minutes walk away past the equally convenient Surfers Bay restaurant and bar.
It’s worth checking out the Surfers Bay bar -they serve great chargrilled food and have live music on a Sunday night, and are only two minutes walk from the front door!
Oistins is five minutes away by car and has 24-hour mini marts, a Chefette and a KFC if you’re that way inclined, but also a great supermarket with a large range of healthy alternatives including Waitrose products on sale. Self catering is easy!
On the other hand, five minutes walk in the other direction will get you to Silverpoint resort and restaurant (4*) where you can treat yourself to dinner or watch the kite surfers do their thing over lunch.
If you like the choice of being able to have peace and quiet when you want it, then this part of the island is for you, and if you want a whole lot of bang for your buck, check out this apartment – it really is great value for money!!
Silver Sands is the windsurfing and kitesurfing capital of Barbados. This area has hosted several world windsurfing events. This apartment is located just a short walk to one of my favourite little beaches, it is a small beach with a large tree where you can sit and read in absolute peace, it is like having your own private beach. One of my other favourite things to do is to walk the other large beaches that are just a stroll away, you can walk along this coast for a few miles, I just love to do it early on a morning. One end of Silver Sands beach offers high sand dunes with shade trees, this area is perfect for a picnic. There is a park nearby with playground equipment for kids. De Action Surf Shop is near to this park. Up the hill about a block from the church is a convenience store that is very well stocked, you can get everything there. If you are driving you should head to Cafe Luna at Little Arches Hotel, one of the most romantic resaturants on the island, it is a rooftop setting overlooking Enterprise Beach, the food is good and so is the service, a great spot for anyone wanting a fine dining experience. Then there is of course Oistins, this is a great location, there is always activity there, you can eat local food day or night, purchase fresh fish to cook yourself or eat at one of the many vendors offering fish, chicken, shrimp or pork. Monday nights is the limbo and fire eating show, lots of fun and Friday night the place comes alive with music and vendors cooking everywhere. This is one of the biggest attractions on the island for locals and tourists alike. The Barbados Golf Club is a short drive away, affordable golfing fees and a restaurant at the golf club.
