About Kari Tiedemann
We needed a restful and beautiful casual retreat on an out island, playing in the sea, beach combing, reading, tennis at the club and bone fishing. A romantic setting away from it all. I grew up in Norway where we would go to a simple summer hut on a fjord in summer. Later lived in London England, and Western Canada. Riding in the mountains of Montana and skiing in Canada. Now live in New York and London. The house is typically Bahamian, Slipcovers on sofas, bedcovers can all be washed, you can relax and not worry.
Kari Tiedemann purchased this House in 2005
Why Kari Tiedemann chose Central Eleuthera
It's amazing. I can provide you with a link to a video if you are interested. Vimeo.com/507088765 Password: windermere (lower case)
What makes this House unique
The house is a typical out island house, basic and simple. That is part of the fun. Jacques Cousteau, oceanographer and our neighbor, said our beach was one of the three most beautiful beaches in the world. White and pink cool coral sand, lovely skies, beautiful blue green water, a real getaway. Having drinks in our Tahiti hut on the beach ends the day perfectly.. then out to Tippys restaurant, the Windermere Club (in season) or have movie nights with our film library. Complete relaxation.

An idyllic stay in an incredibly special home
Our stay at Sea Shell House is a memory we will always cherish. I really cannot say enough about how beautiful this home is...and I use the word "home" instead of "house," because it felt like we were staying in a home we had been coming to for years and knew intimately. Lived-in and comfortable in the most wonderful ways, from the top-notch bed linens and towels to the books on the shelves.
Beryl, Sea Shell's housekeeper and manager (she has taken care of this house for 18 years), is fantastic. She stocked the fridge with food for us before our arrival, and was available the entire time to help us with whatever we needed, from mosquito-bite creme to renting paddle boards. What a classy, funny, wonderful lady.
Practical info: don't do what we did and fly into North Eleuthera. Fly into Gov's Harbor or Rock Sound instead. N. Eleuthera is over an hour north, and transportation is expensive. Fly into Gov's Harbor and rent a car from Stanton Cooper for about $70/day (Kari will give you his info). Unless you truly want to go nowhere (which isn't a bad idea, and as mentioned before, Beryl can have food brought to you and you will want for nothing), you will need a car, and you will WANT a car. The Friday Night Fish Fry in Gov's Harbor is awesome, and a drive to Lighthouse Point is a must...achingly beautiful - and empty - beaches, gorgeous water, and cool caves to explore!
Beds and pillows are super comfy, water pressure is wonderful, A/C unit in every room, which you won't need all the time. We slept with ours on, then shut them off upon waking and kept the windows and doors open all day, as there is a wonderful breeze.
We saw fewer than 10 people on the beach the ENTIRE time. This is THE most private, secluded beach I have ever been to, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Nothing but white sand and clear water. The house has beach chairs and towels, and we brought tons of toys with us: blow-up rafts from Target were a total hit in the ocean and in the pool.
We had dinner only one night at the Windermere Club, and I wish we had gone more. The food is phenomenal, and it has an air of old Bahamian elegance that I loved. We used the charcoal grill to cook dinner a few nights, which was great! You can get fresh fish every day in Tarpum Bay, just down the road. There is an AMAZING grocery store in Rock Sound, and a well-appointed liquor store for your rum :-)
Not enough room for all the accolades...I could go on and on. Thank you, Kari. We will be back.
Our stay at Sea Shell House was perfect. We were met at the property by the manager, who showed us around, & gave us her cell number if we ever needed anything. The home was decorated beautifully, was very clean, warm and welcoming. The kitchen had everything you needed to cook, and plenty of dishes, glasses & silver for entertaining. The bedrooms were great, very comfortable beds and nice linens & towels. The grounds were impeccably maintained, the pool cleaned daily, plenty of beach chairs and towels, and the view is just outstanding. I would highly recommend this property to anyone! Thank you Kari, for offering your beautiful home for our vacation, we took great care of it! Many thanks, & looking forward to a return visit.
Dear Amanda and Family,
Thank you for your understanding review. Windermere Island is a back to basics out island experience. We all have to slow down...it is a little quirky.. nothing is perfect.. but the slow down is what we need ..to reconnect with life basics.
It is so beautiful in its simplicity. I am so glad your family had a good time.
Beautiful and private!
The seashell house is a gorgeous property! The view of the turquoise water from the house is amazing and I loved listening to the sound of the waves! We stayed there with our three kids all very young and they had a blast. The beach has such soft sand which was great for the kids and everything was really private. The entire time we were there we saw just three other people walking the beach. We spent our days just alternating between the beach and the pool until the evening. There are a lot of bugs in the evening so if its not a windy day id avoid the beach, we used repellent but still got bit. A lot of people said on the windy days theres other beaches to visit but I think the windy days were the best days. There were no bugs and the waves arent really that big but are a lot if fun to play in.
Beryl is wonderful and really nice, she brought us groceries and lunch everyday from her moms place and it was really good! Kari is the owner and is also very nice and she made sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay.
We never visited any other beaches, the house had everything we needed. On the last day we did rent a car but it wasnt really necessary. We will definitely be visiting again!
So much better than we even imagined...
My family and I just returned a week ago from staying at this beautiful home, Sea Shell on Windemere Island. The pictures do not do it justice. Beryl met us at the home, showed us around, and gave us fabulous tips and guidance on making the most of our vacation. I think we did everything she told us about. She even looked up phone numbers for us to help us get done what we needed.
The home itself is beautiful and well organized with two masters on opposite ends of the house. We didn't need the additional bedroom that is accessed from the outside. And hallelujah it had air conditioning as we were there in July. Beds were comfortable, towels were luxurious and the entire home was spotless. All the basics were provided unlike when we rent a home in Gulf Shores area where we have to go get everything from toilet paper to trash bags. Beryl even did an initial grocery run for us to get us started.
But, the crown jewel of this property is the location on private access Windemere Island. Easy to get to, just a turn off the main road in Savannah Sound and a cross over a small bridge. But, the beach was all ours. NO ONE was out there. And it was beautiful! The colors, the sand, no trash, hardly even any sea weed. And you are on the Atlantic side so you get the nice warm waves. The walk from the house to the beach was not hard at all thanks to the walkway. And even nicer is the cabana down by the water. Then you have to mention the wonderful pool. It's on the opposite side of the house from the beach, but this was good on days where big winds were blowing. Great sun all day at the pool too. It didn't end up in the shade halfway through the day.
Beryl informed us of a food truck that was located very close by Windemere. We frequented that often for our week. The club restaurant on Windemere was closed during this off season so getting to other restaurants was quite a drive and quite a price tag. So the food truck, Queen of Tarts, served us well with reasonable prices and wonderful dishes.
The front and back yard of this home have obviously been manicured. The palms in the back yard leading to the ocean are just breathtaking. You really are in paradise there. The gardener chopped down a couple of coconuts for us right from the yard (thanks Beryl for telling us!). And Beryl had stunning fresh flowers in every room of the house. If you want a beautiful home directly on the beach with total privacy AND A POOL, this is the place for you. Thanks Kari/Beryl!!
I have genuine delight that our VRBO guests, Tina Roberts and family had such a great time our house, Sea Shell, Windermere Island. I am thrilled that they'd got into the zone of out island living which can at first seem a bit quirky and slightly going back in time.
Tina, I was very happy to be in touch with you and hope you will share some of your photos of your island fishing adventure! Thank you for your taking the time to share your experience with us. Warmest,
Sea Shell is a Jewel in the Crown
We've now stayed at 4 places in Eleuthera, and looked at 5 or 6 more in person, and Sea Shell is one of our favorites. We weren't sure what Windermere Island would be like,--afraid it might feel cut off from Eleuthera proper, but that wasn't our experience at all. Yes, it was private, and we rarely saw other people on the beach, unlike at Twin Coves, for example, where we saw Spring Breakers as well as families and multiple couples. But it made going to Rock Sound (for the airport, groceries or the blue hole) & Tarpum Bay (for fresh fish) very easy. We especially loved the view from the decks and the living room. At night when we turned on the outside lights it was such a surprise to see the palm trees lit up. Dramatically beautiful!
And...that beach! I loved walking the short but beautiful path to the beach. It was so alluring we didn't go many other places. The tides varied widely, so at low tide the beach was extremely wide. We had many excellent beach days, always with wind to keep the bugs away. A few days the wind was a bit much, but that meant sunning by the protected pool or going exploring. We went to Lighthouse Beach one day, and that was staggeringly beautiful. Not fair to compare Lighthouse Beach to anything else, but it is a commitment. Sea Shell's beach is a magnificent second.
The house feels classic. First of all, it's clear that Sea Shell is lived in by real people. Things make sense, and it's not a generic rental with minimal attention to detail. The single-story design makes getting around very easy. Every room feels nearby but the bedroom layout affords lots of privacy. The master bedroom was extremely comfortable. Two of the bedrooms are accessed only from the outside, making them removed enough from the others for quiet, but not remote. We cooked up a storm in the kitchen, which, while not new, was well appointed with everything we needed. (This has not been the case everywhere!) There are at least 3 outside patio areas facing the Atlantic, plus the pool area, so it's easy to take advantage of outdoor living.
Housekeeper Beryl generously waited for our arrival, later than we expected, and graciously answered any questions we had, and gave us the space we requested--we were happy to take care of ourselves. The owners were very easy to deal with--not a lot of fuss, and very straightforward and friendly.
All in all, Sea Shell worked very well for us, and everyone in our group would be happy to return there!
Thank you Stephen. We enjoyed having you!
Sea Shell House was lovely
Sea Shell House was so lovely. The home is wonderfully stocked and the caretaker, Beryl, so helpful and kind. Very comfy beds, very nice furnishings and a wonderful pool that our four-year-old loved. The third bedroom is detached so is nice for older kids or other family friends/family members. The beach access was so quick and easy and the beach gazebo a perfect cool lounging spot. We will definitely be back!
We're so thrilled you enjoyed your time at Sea Shell House! We look forward to having you back! Thank you!
An out island retreat with a security gate house before a short bridge. The house is a typical out island beach cottage, bathrooms are being updated, kitchen remains simple and basic. The property is breathtaking, from the house you feel you are on a deserted island on a glorious pink white coral sand beach on the Atlantic. Good air conditioning if hot. In the wi ter season from November to May you have the Windermere Club at your disposal so you can dine, meet other owners and their families. There are two tennis courts all year. A second sheltered beach near the club is wonderful too. Julius or Danny Rankin can take you on a local fishing trips to see sea turtles and other sea life and make a video for you. Think going into island retreat mode and you will have a fabulous time! Fun restaurants like Tippy's and 1643 are 20 minutes away, also Friday night Fish fry in Governor's Harbour is an evening of fun local island flavor with disco outside. Have fun!
