About Sharlene Ketrenos

The Spirit of Curlew Lake is my canvas on which i have painted with passion for over a decade. The home is welcoming, peaceful and easy for all to find comfort. Its a constant in my life and grounding for me, yet also a work in progress, as we always strive to improve the guest experience.

I studied the arts in college and brought all that I learned back to my hometown, Curlew, where I graduated high school and made lifelong friends. This place is special. Glad I can share it with you.

Sharlene Ketrenos purchased this house in 2001

Why Sharlene Ketrenos chose Washington

I designed and built the Spirit of Curlew Lake (with help from some wonderful people). It was a risky thing to do, at the time the largest home in the county, but it brought more investment to this far flung community and boosted tourism in the poorest county in the state.

What makes this house unique

The home has a spiritual quality hard to describe but discovered by all who come here. The views through 72 windows are spectacular. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking and the wildlife is a constant source of wonder and the 4 acres provide privacy and room to roam.

We spent our family new year at the spirit of curlew lake, and the only thing I can say is I am already thinking about going back there again. The owner is super friendly and helpful and she is willing to go out of her way to help and make your stay perfect. Thank you again........we loved it.

Dream Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

By far the best vacation I have been on! Such a lovely, warm & inviting home! Thank you Sharlene! The whole family found it difficult to leave!

This was the first road trip for our 9 month old son. He LOVED being there! My husband and I are eager to return. In fact, I'm looking at carving out time to do just that as soon as we can!

I wouldn't go anywhere else!

Thank you again!!!!

Great Get-A-Way

  • 5 of 5

My family and myself stayed at the Spirit of Curlew over the Labor Day weekend; we had a very enjoyable stay. We found the home to be clean, spacious, well decorated and in some ways unique.

We were able to have a quiet weekend, we enjoyed hiking (the nearby railroad trestle trail) and I enjoyed kayaking the beautiful lake. We enjoyed a camp fire in the wonderful fire pit.

I would recommend this vacation home to any of my friends or family.

Our group of ten had a great time!

  • 5 of 5

A group of us came out to do some volunteer work over by Colville, and this was the only accommodation that we could find that would allow our group to stay together. We are very glad we found this home! We had deer in the yard every day and night, we could hear coyotes howling at night (really cool!), and the kitchen (with nice island) was great for our group member who loved cooking.

Sharlene, the owner, was very pleasant and happily hauled the kayaks (stored near our rental house) down to a dock next to another small house she owns. Everyone that used the kayaks had a blast!

If we ever have a group visiting the area in the future, we'll DEFINITELY consider staying here again--thank you Sharlene!

family vacation not quite what we thought

  • 2 of 5

As I entered I was very unsure that this was the right place. So much stuff. After letting everyone else in we all are not sure this is the right house. Kitchen is so cluttered we have no room to put any of our stuff -on the counters or in cupboards.

We really just wanted to know about the lake because we are very far and high off the lake and the listing said there was a path to the lake. Joke of the house was "yeah its called a road". There is no note to tell us anything about the lake. We find a handwritten list of fun things to do but no idea how or where to do them.Still nothing about the lake. With that list is a receipt and on the back are two words but some of the letters are numbers. Yep, I guess correctly -WiFi code.

We are really want to go to the lake but we drove all day and with no idea where to go and really not wanting to spend more money on a discovery pass for the state park we decide to wait til the next day to venture out to find this "path". BIG mistake, storm rolled in and Tuesday was shot. We did take a drive to try to find a path but didn't find anything. Found the state park and decided the pass it would be and Wednesday we would head there but still we have found nothing about this path to the lake nor have we found the path to the lake.

Now I understand that one cannot expect the owner to control the weather but had we had some information we would have planned a little different. We would have went to the lake Monday if we knew how to get there. Wednesday we had a good hour at the lake before the winds picked up around noon. That night there was a big storm, lots of wind and ran, and the bad weather continued through Thursday. Wednesday afternoon the owner showed up, starts talking to us about the lake pointing down below us and then below the road to another house and there is where we can access the lake...would have been nice to know that on Monday.

We have now not slept for three days because the beds are so uncomfortable and squeaky. We spend lots of time in the kitchen trying to find things, things that work, trying to rearrange our things because there is no room. We find a toaster! Doesn't work. We find two or more crock pots but the first two we try don't work. We find a zillion coffee mugs but no cleaning supplies to even wipe off a counter. Will not return, still tired and sore. So much potential just done wrong.

The view and the house are beautiful, just cluttered and uncomfortable.

Owner's Response: So disappointing to hear this guests comments when there is so much to do right out the door, bad weather or not. There are several paths to the lake within walking distance and not difficult to find if you really look, as all our other guests have found. We did offer access to a dock on the lake at our neighboring property less than a 5 minute walk. and we offered to move the kayaks there for the guests convenience, but they declined. We have invested in new high quality linens and comforters for the beds and had no other complaints, but we care very much and will do all we can to improve, as we do every year. Regards the comment about so much stuff, this guest is the first to ever say anything of sort. Honestly the house is relatively spare with modest amount of art so as not to clutter. This guest is off-base to make such claims that there was no room for her stuff. We did find the toaster which had been broken, but not reported by the prior guests. Perhaps she broke it, like the crystal we found broken which breakage she neglected to take responsibility for? or the dog urine on the rug? This guests comments demonstrate she isnt able to enjoy anothers' home for vacation as these will always come with a different personality, but instead should stay at motels for lodging where perhaps her expectations will be met, even if she loses out in o many other ways from such choice. Sharlene & Jeff

NE Washington near Republic & Merritt Field Airport.

Other Activities: Parasailing, horseshoes, shopping, boating, wildlife viewing, spas, kayaking, snowmobiling, fishing, ATV's and dirt bikes, birding, fossil hunting, gold panning and rock climbing.

Republic is a historic productive gold mining town located in the northeast corner of Washington state, in Ferry County. Although off the beaten path, the rewards are too many to list. The views throughout the Okanogan Highlands are truly spectacular, the wildlife is abundant... its like going back 100 years to a simpler time.

Our home overlooks the 8 mile length of gorgeous Curlew Lake from the north end. The lake is a great place for recreational fishing and boating. We provide four kayaks for our guest's use.

In downtown Republic you can explore Stonerose Center and learn of the geologic history of this amazing area.

Winding nearby is the scenic Kettle River, which flows up and down from British Columbia into Washington and back up again. A very popular place for fishing, wildlife viewing including Big Horn Sheep, Moose and Bear, as well as tubing for many fun going families.

Ranches nearby, like Diamond K provide horseback riding adventures. Go to Swan Lake and see (and hear) the Loons as their calls provide a wonderful ambiance for all who take the time to listen. Enjoy.

If you like to snow Ski: Chewelah to the east and Sitzmark to the northwest are each within about a 45 minute drive.
